While this hasn't been updated in ages, I've been using it since 2001. In my humble opinion, it's the best compliment or replacement to the start button out there. Very light on resources (16 megs ram and virtually no CPU usage). Menus pop up faster than Windows default ones do - provided you disable the transition effects.
I use this as a compliment to the start button, right clicking my desktop brings up the start menu, as well as a slew of shortcuts. I have 2 panekiller icons on my taskbar. One for downloaded files, and another for my music section making it easy to que up music to Winamp.
I've tried Winstep's NextStart which is far more advanced but a little more confusing to setup and certainly slower and stardock's Rightclick which has a few nice features (sticking a Desktop Widget into the start menu is cool) but it's painfully slow for menus to popup.
Anyway, $10? How can you go wrong?

Excellent little program. I registered it the same day I downloaded the beta. True you can do everything PK does from the registry, but who wants to mess with that ugly peice of engineering? Also I like how you can change the startmenu icon, and the transitions are neat. Doesn't use much memory btw.

Sorting the startmenu or removing ANY folders are just a matter of tweaking the registry.
Get "Costumizer 2000" or "WinBosst 2000" both www.download.com to do this the easy way without memory eating extra programs running.

haha, sucks to have Win9x huh? WinME automatically alphabitizes the start menu and you can get rid of the documents folder. =Þ

This is a nifty little program. I've registered it and used it for several months now.
Not only does it overcome one the great annoyances with the Win98 Start Menu (does not automatically alphabetize), but it also allows you to right-click on any menu item to see the properties of the actual object (not just the shortcut).
Another favorite feature of mine is being able to shut off the useless (to me, anyway) Recent Document menu, Find menu, etc.
On top of all that, the author is quite responsive to feedback.
Highly recommended.
