Publisher's Description

Pegasus Mail is an e-mail client that interacts directly with the user, allowing mail to be sent, read, filed, printed and otherwise manipulated through a graphical interface. Small and fast, it can be left running permanently on the workstation and includes powerful tools to notify the user when new mail arrives. It can run on single Windows computers, or local area networks - it has special support for Novell NetWare LANs that allow it to operate intuitively and with almost no maintenance. It also supports multiple users on a single computer. It can act as a complete internal mail system on its own without needing further servers or components: it can send and receive Internet mail on its own using standard protocols (SMTP, IMAP and POP3).

I have tried a variety of other email clients. IMHO, there is nothing that beats the power, flexibility and reliablity of Pegasus. Some of the features that make it superior are perhaps not for the stubbornly non-geeky, but power has its price in the form of a (not daunting) learning curve. Once its merits are appreciated and exploited, Pegasus really stands out.

I loved Pmail, but please let it die a graceful death. 16-bit support? DOS? Win 95? Netware? David Harris was amazing. But unless he has come up with a 32/64-bit program that offers something better than Thunderbird (yes, I know TB is currently 32-bit), then let's remember pmail for the excellent program it was.

I don't actually use Pegasus Mail anymore but it's been a great free client for a long time now (since ~1990?). Pegasus Mail is very light, efficient and has tools that many other clients don't. It's made to read and organize email and it does an outstanding job. If you like Thunderbird or Outlook Express or Eudora or whatever then by all means use them but choice is a good thing. I'm glad that Google's Chrome, Opera and even IE (version 7+) exist even though I personally still prefer Firefox.

When we have a client like Thunderbird, why do we need this?

TB has a full calendar, ongoing development, and its based on the very solid mozilla engine.

It IS still being developed but author is requesting 1000 donations of $50 ea. He has over 300 now. Looks fine but I found the open source Sylpheed (japanese dev) and it is excellent too. I almost wish I had seen this first so I could have tried it. I like sylpheed 'cause it's completely portable, incl encryption & spell check and has gtk themes as well.

Just repeating what others say.
I have used it for about decade. Tried others, but always came back.
User interface have been improving, but still it is somewhat strange. In a way, it is maybe a good thing. People may suppose that they know email, while there is many small details. New interface and need to read instructions may force people to try to understand what they are really doing.
Very good program.

Firstly, I'd rather telnet to port 110 and use manual POP3 commands to read my email than even CONSIDER using rubbish like Thunderbird. Right, that's out of the way, back on topic now.. like yokozuna, Pegasus was the first real decent email client I ever used on Windows. Surprised to see it's still around. I went to Eudora for a while, and then moved to TheBat. Nothing wrong with Pegasus back then, and I'll recommend it now because it's still free.. plus they've added multiuser which back then was the reason I left it. And it's written by a Kiwi!

I've used this for several years now, always quickly coming back to it after trying other clients (including Thunderbird).

This beta improves what for me is the program's most indispensible feature: on-server preview with selective downloading/deletion, which I think is the simplest way to deal with spam.

The best gets better, and earns another five-star rating.

dont forget to support pmail
http://www.pmail.com/roadmap_05.htm

pmail need to make the pmail setting ready for new user, without need to setting before using it.
But still provide advanced setting for advanced user

I think that Pegasus is one of the best e-mail programs. It was my first Windows e-mail client (over a decade ago :-D). I still use it at work. The interface is a bit archaic, but if you need something what is not necessarily eye candy but reliable, Pegasus is definitely worth your consideration.

Aside Firefox, Pegasus is the software most frequently used here. If it looks old, it is actually the oldest living email client around. Still, this time the user interface got a good new look. Sorry to say, but Pegasus got two large problems. First is that the options are so many that one need a loooong time to be able to explore them all, secondly, when you have used it for a long time it's impossible to find an alternative living up to all these options one have become addicted to. A five star plus from me - but I guess asking me is like asking a alcoholic if s/he want a free bottle of the finest whiskey for free...

-1 star: Ugly old fashioned interface; -1 star: Not available in Spanish!; Good program though.

I would wait off before downloading as I saw this on their site:

"Pegasus Mail v4.1 release temporarily withdrawn

Some minor problems have come to light in the Pegasus Mail v4.1 release archive, and we have temporarily withdrawn the release so we can investigate them.

We expect the v4.1 release archive to be available again around Wednesday April 16th 2003 - please check back here after that time for the amended version.
We apologize for any inconvenience."

Check with their website soon for the new download.

Still my favourite mailer. Be carefull if you install over an old version, POP and SMPT-configurations may disappear although install option "Pre-configure a user mailbox" is UNCHECKED! This version got some small bugs e.g. timeout settings not stored and the panic-button doesn´t work.
Hope there will be an early update if there is lot of feedback. It is worth this mailer as long as its free.

WOW! it even better than 4.02!
Pmail is the best mail client, sure it's not "dressed up" like others, but it's stable, bomb-proof, has no security problems like outlook...i'd recommend this to anyone.

I am at a loss at why some of the comments below are so negative. I have used Pegasus for years now and cannot see the time, where I would change to any other email program. Yes, I have use the likes of Outlook Express and others when it has been forced on me via work etc but I honestly do feel that Pegasus offers everything I need or want.
With regards to the interface being bad or sub-standard, is this not in the "eye of the beholder" or more likely, "what you are used to". I would have no hesitation in recommending this program to the vast majority of computer users!

A powerful email client, with a different UI admittedly. To the person below who said that Pegasus has a proprietary storage system which only Pegasus can use, this is only partly true. It has its own storage system, yes; but it also supports the same storage system which Eudora uses (and many other email clients, of which Outlook Express does only a partial and broken implementation), and therefore if you so wish to move to Eudora or something else, then the transition is eased. The email filtering system covers most of what most people will ever need. The HTML rendering is much better compared to v3.xx but still has its quirks. This said, it is not vulnerable to embedded script viruses in HTML emails like other email clients. An upcoming point release will add extra features including encrypted email storage, although this is a mostly moot point when using it under an operating system like 2000/XP with the correct security settings. Overall, a great program, but not quite a 5 star due to some small UI quirks which I haven't found a setting or workaround for.

For the interface looking "almost" the same - well if the interface is buttons, okay that's partly true. But Pegasus v4 has never promised to come with new buttons - first of all the coding of the client is totally rewritten. If that's not a change, then I don't know a s*** about software. From this literally fundamental change Pegasus v4 got an option to "floating windows" - very much the same interface as "standard" email clients (including Outlook) got. The message reader windows have also a new interface and functions - and handle HTML mail far better without being an open virus channel as some email clients are. The address book got a new interface and are under total rewriting as well - and the setting options got a total new interface. If some don't like Pegasus - that's life, but the level of "like" or "not like" is NOT the same as stating that a totally rewritten software program has not changed. The final v4 is bound to attract a large number of new users that will in it self be the best indication if Pegasus has become history or again is making history...

I have been using Pegasus for years. I think it is a great program that is more stable than Outlook could ever dream to be. After years of development it has come to be a fast and stable system.

huuuuuh? the interface looks almost exactly the same as 3 years ago when I last used this.

Sorry Mr Pmail man, but your program is just pointless these days. It combined with mercury was a suitably powerful yet easy to administer network solution while novell was doing a little better, but now people are moving away from novell towards NT, exchange and outlook are becoming more the norm for networks etc.

Sorry, but Pmail is long past its best now.

oops, this mail client sucks. my school used it.
aweful interface. stores mail in a non text format so it's impossible to view without the mail client or any other mail reader.

I've used the Mercury Mail server for quite some time now. But I never used the Pegasus Mail client because, despite it's advantages, the interface was just awful. Well no more! As soon as the final version is out I'm getting rid of Outlook. The new version provides a great interface without all the virus problems that come with Outlook.
