Selectively replace most any HTML text or tags.

GREAT software never dies.. even when the developer himself does

(I miss JD5000, too)

there is an active, AVID community developing filter sets for proxomitron

[Bfilter is worth trying]

If you crave a spiffier interface and do not need SSL filtering try proximodo

God bless Scott R Lemmon!

The anybrowser sh11t blocker. Runs through WINE. Gentoo Dapper, Tiger: Platinum , Gold http://appdb.winehq.org/...=application&iId=39
Takes a while to learn the tools prx has. But noobz can still use. Be sure to download a current filterset.
How-to's? Filter syntax resembles regex. Prx also has builtin "commands" (like functions). Reread Scott's help html often.
Castlecops is down, but there's yahoo group and prxbx.com/forums, and google for some old pages with good info. Users who write filters tend to become specialists. :-)

Constantly hoping an oss team will consider a fresh rewrite of this unique app. Would like an easier config-interface. A full "IDE" would be nice.

Seeing as how there's not been a review of Proxomitron for nearly 4 years I thought I'd post one to say it still works, filters are still regularly updated and released, and it's still as effective and trouble free as ever. I highly recommend this over paid versions - still outstanding after all this time and the author is sadly missed.

The best proxy server with filtering feature. Customise the filters the way you want it. Imagine what you can do with it. Let say there is a website that requires you to click on a button every 10 minutes. What you can do is to program proxomitron to rewrite the webpage to include javascripts that auto-loads the said page after 10 minutes. Good eh? Sounds like cheating paid-to-surf programs.

I submitted several filters to Scott long time ago.

It is sad that he passed away.

I hope Scott's family would release the source code of Proxomitron so that this superb program can be maintained by the fans.

Privoxy is a good open source alternative to this program. However, the most recent version I tested 3.0.3, waits for the entire page to be downloaded before the filtering engine kicks in. This is not a good way to do it.

Proxomitron starts filtering without waiting for the entire page to be fully downloaded first.

I love this program, but the author is dead. :(

Does anyone know of a good alternative? Privoxy? Webwasher?

I give it a 3 as an average between a 5 for effectiveness, and a 1 for usability. The interface, general design, and usability is absolutely awful.

As just one small example, I was hoping to find a way to exclude a particular site from Proxomitron's filtering. I found "Bypass List.txt". Great, I thought, I'm all set! But wait, the entries shown in that file look like this:

[^/]++windowsupdate.(microsoft|).com[:/]

So, umm, OK, great, thanks a lot. Ad Muncher is leaps and bounds better than Proxomitron in terms of interface.

Been using The Proxomitron since version 3. Proxo is more than just an ad filter and popup blocker. You can rewrite web pages to make them easier to read, remove the junk, fix annoyances, you name it. However, it helps to know HTML, JavaScript and CSS when creating your own filters. Proxo has helped me learn these technologies by giving me something to practice on.

Proxomitron is an important part of a complete breakfast in the fight for privacy and security. The computer you bought is yours. Out of the box, Proxomitron can block cookies, hide your browser's identity and hide the URL that sent you to a page (the referrer). With the right filters, you can even customize them instead of simply removing them. Along with a firewall and a virus scanner, doing things on the Internet is a lot safer.

While Proxomitron is a great tool, if your browser lets you customize a feature, use it! Like their operating systems, Microsoft continues to make Ignorance Exploiter do what developers want rather than what users want. You're better off switching to Mozilla or Opera. Mozilla is getting more and more pro-user features such as popup controls, cookie controls, minimum font size and no scripting in mail and news messages and will have a easy-to-use interface to pick the options.

The default skins are annoying but it's not a big deal since you can turn them off. Click Config, uncheck "Don't use textures", save your config then reload it. Proxo should now look like a normal dialog box.

Bottom line: Thanks to Proxomitron I can give it 10 stars! (But I won't know if the FileForum server will accept it until after I submit my review. =)

BTW, the japanese on the site means "It went out" or "it disappeared". The author recently decided to give it up for a variety of reasons. He always said he wrote Proxo for his own use, so I doubt he'll stop working on it. We may not see another release for a long time, if at all. Whatever he does, I wish him the best. :)

This is the best popup stopper, and its free. Just as good as any pay version out there. Plus it works with any browser, unlike the other pay programs. I hope the author changes his mind about giving up on it, over something so stupid. Here is a link to where they say they will always have his program available for download in their download section.

Great program - a must have. If you go to the website now (as of the 4th of June -8 GMT), it's on a Cobalt machine that may have been rooted, the text "消えました" means "it went out."

My understanding is that the author has decided to discontinue the product and remove the site. Sounds like a complicated situation, and a darn shame, IMHO. The product though is a great one. I've used it since version 4.3 and it's been wonderful!

Has anyone looked at their website?
Just some chinese (or some eastern language) characters, no links, no info....nothing.

I am loathe to install anything on my pc unless I know where it comes from....too many trojans out there.

An excellent web content filter for an ... excellent price, FREE.
Beside that, Proxomitron is proxy server and needs IE and other apps been configured to use a proxy. I'd like it more if it was a sub proxy working in the background without been necessary change all my online apps to use a proxy.
A second negative point (IMHO) is its user interface. Never saw such a great program with such a silly UI. Never mind, it's just my opinion and i really hate skins and colors and the rest :)
If i had to choose the second best Ad filter and the most configurable one, my choise would be Proxomitron.
For the moment the best (for me) is AdMuncher althought it's not freeware

Before I found out about Proxomitron I was using AdSubtract Pro. Then I found out that AdSubtract Pro was using their code. Proxomitron=Free. AdSubtract=$25. Man am I a DOLT!! Proxomitron does so much more and is far less trouble than AdSubtract, as It allows me total access to my router admin functions where AdSubtract prevents me from accessing Admin. Kudos to the Proxomitron Foundation! ***** Stars!

I was a little skeptical of this program at first, but now after using it, its the best popup ad blocker I have ever used. It really works well, and I'm just using the default settings. It appears to be very configurable. I'm using it with the Opera web browser (yes I know opera has a built in blocker, but you can't bypass it for certain windows you want to open).
