There are numerous reasons why this program deserves more than just 5 stars.

1. free
2. open source
3. small
4. easy to use
5. crazy effective

the list goes on. i could not imagine administering to my Cisco equipment without this tool in the box.

SecureCRT doesn't come close to Putty, Putty is much faster, try
time cat /var/log/somebiglog
and look at "user time"...
Putty is almost 2 times faster on 1Mb link, no metter of compression settings.
Home and End keys works correctly by default, unlike in SecureCRT.
The same with line wrapping.
Putty wins hands down, and its free.

Have to agree on the registry thing. Had to reinstall my PC just recently and lost all of my settings. Not cool, otherwise my SSH client of choice.

Putty is awesome, but it loses 1 star for not being able to save in a local .ini file vs registry

Another problem with this listing, it says freeware instead of open source.

super app!
it says for win98, but either it will work on other versions of windows, or there are other versions of putty that will work on other windows - just go to their website if needed.

A little remark: version 0.57 is not beta but final release, according to official PuTTY website. Same thing in the About dialog.

A lot of other software developers could learn from this program. It does exactly what it claims to in a small effecient package. Would be worth paying for easily, but its free (which makes it even better).

This is the best Win32 enabled SSH client, outside of OpenSSH itself, of course that I have used. Even though OpenSSH is dramatically faster (especially vs. pscp), Putty has a MUCH better key maintenance system.
I love it. I used it every day. I don't know what I would do without it.

Excellent program! Up to this point, I've been using SecureCRT. But now, PuTTY is my new SSH client! Why? Cause it's cleaner, simple, straight-forward, and of course, free ;)

I agree with all the other comments here. Putty is by far the best and not because it's free, that's just a bonus.

Excellent program, i have been using Tera Term Pro for the past year or so and found it to be working fine, i mainly used TTP because of the Xmodem support and Macro's for autologin etc however i hardly ever needed to use Xmodem as i had FTP access to the server and i felt a little insecure having auto login, i have known about putty for some time and used it in the past but i have only just setup putty for use with SSH and RSA security, i am very happy with the program, the authors know what they are doing and if i ever need to use xmodem or similar they have applications such as PSFTP and PSCP for secure file transfer. I wouldnt bother with SecureCRT etc, try putty first it probably has what you want and it is free!
