One of the the worst pieces of crapware I've ever seen in my life.

Use Miranda which is much faster, lighter and doesn't abuse your system by installing junk additions.

Seeing how this application is nothing other than a scam to steal people's ICQ#'s perhaps the betanews people would be nice enough to actually remove this program from the site.

DiamOnd - that is a bummer you lost your ICQ#.
I'd said in previous posts that this thing is a pile of crap and was made to steal ICQ numbers and send spam - hopefully others here will read the warnings and not loose their ICQ #.

This is beyond crap. My ICQ number got stolen after I used QIP.

After registering, it will be sending spam to your contacts. Also, you will magically find out that you have a blog page on their site, where all your status updates will be posted.

This project was sold to a russian media conglomerate, and now it is doing what it was paid to do: generating clicks from users. By ANY means possible.

WORST CRAP EVER.

Recently, I've learnt that by default QiP saves all your user identification data on RBC servers (ICQ/jabber user/password/etc). Good bye, privacy.

I don't know anybody who use icq. I had try icq and qip and may say - very low ergonomic. And i do not know anybody, who use icq today. It (icq) was actual 10 years ago, but today it`s archaic

Well - I *assume* that they fixed this problem:

http://seclists.org/bugtraq/2009/Feb/0024.html

...but again - so many other options out there that are either a) open source or b) from someone more well known.

QIP Infium supports GTalk and Jabber too. So don't post your review if you even doesn't try program. I like QIP for it's minimalistic, but pretty interface and alot of options (Miranda preferences is a geek hell). Also QIP has "meta-contacts" for merging ICQ\Jabber account of your friends.

PS: btw, ICQ is the most popular IM in exUSSR countries. Nobody use MSN or AIM in Russia, so QIP is a great tool for me.

whoa, the 1990's called and said they want their IM's back.

I do enjoy using IM programs, I just don't like the space they hog. That is why I use Trillian.
How ever Skype blows both this and trillian out of the water.

Sorry folks, I don't like sharing my info. with the public. Skype is encrypted.

To netean:
You obviously don't know anything about ICQ. It has been invented in 1997, not 1991.

VictorAnderson

VictorAnderson reviewed v1.0 Build 9012 RC3 on Jul 31, 2008

Don't really see the point in using this. There are too many other freeware alterntives that off many more features (such as Miranda).
Still giving it a 2 instead of a 1 though - just because it DOES look the programmers did a decent job.

netean

netean reviewed v1.0 Build 9011 RC2 on Jul 22, 2008

ICQ? who uses that anymore.. it's not 1991!

Best ICQ client around. I still like Trillian because its more versatile and supports all the protocols one can imagine, BUT if you want an icq-only client this one is as good as it gets, imo.

if it gets better i might ditch trillian for this... being closed source tho.. im just gonna assume that its gonna turn into payware once its "finished"..

also.. calling it unique.. is a bit of a stretch.. its not as if its the first realtime communcation toolie that goes through a public server..

Best ICQ client, hands down.

!!AND!! at last it's becomming multi-platform! Atm only Jabber and XISS protocols are implemented. More to follow.

ZenWarrior

ZenWarrior reviewed v2005 Build 7990 on Oct 31, 2006

ICQ is still more popular in some places around the world than many other "popular" U.S.A.-based protocols. If targeted toward and used in those markets, interoperability is essentially rendered moot. (And who really loves the others anyway?)

That said, QIP is the beauty that ICQ once was -- before AOL got its dirty little hands on it. It's full-featured, ad-free (for now) and definitely replacing the stock ICQ client among my apps.

The client's appearance is clean, attractive, and apparently professionally made. In all, and as an ICQ client, this is a winner.

And yes, I still have my six-digit UIN after using it. (It's somewhere between 400,000 and 500,000.) Also, the website is in both Russian and English. That seems to apply to the program's forums, too.

(Might there be fear-mongering or even xenophobia driving some remarks here?)

VictorAnderson

VictorAnderson reviewed v2005 Build 7990 on Oct 30, 2006

E.T. - If you have (or had) a low enough UIN I suppose by now you've lost it using this thing, right? Or did you take my advice and get a packetsniffer and see what is REALLY going on with this thing?

Nikkie

Nikkie reviewed v2005 Build 7920 on May 28, 2006

The program seems fine . I installed it and created a new acount pretty fast . I also noticed it has skins and smilies . Looks good.

It is pretty lightweight .I had no crashes and really no problems . It was pretty straight forward ..

The site is in another lang. but i have my firefox with its handy extensions .

I don't agree about adding msn , yahoo or other networks . If you really need that , just get gaim /trillian/miranda/psi etc etc...

To VictorAnderson:
Please try not to post stupid comments. QIP DOES NOT send any information to some "THEIR servers" - it only logs in to official ICQ servers. It's not offshore and fly-by-night also. The only truth in your post is that it's Russian - so what?
Anyway, QIP is a pretty good ICQ clone which gives you some information about your counterparts, such as IP address and has useful antispam and antiflood protection. It's also bold and simple so whoever got tired with overloaded native ICQ client will be pleased to use it.
The only reason I give it 3 is that the author in his arrogance thinks that ICQ and AIM are the only exisiting chat protocols and doesn't bother with interoperability with MSN, Yahoo, etc.

VictorAnderson

VictorAnderson reviewed v2005a Build 7901 Alpha on May 1, 2006

E.T. - Please do a little more research (packet sniffer an such) and you'll see what I mean.

Just what the world needs, yet another instant messenger client....yaaawwwwnnn.
Oh but this time its "closed source" (I find it intersting that someone would even bother to point out such a thing).
Personally- I'll stick with the names I know and trust - not an offshore fly-by-night Russian app that's sending MY stuff though THEIR servers..ha..no way.
And oh yeah it's kinda obvious the authors are posting some of the reviews here...ha
