Is there an English version of this program?

Not cool at all. While usability is somewhat better than Registry Editor, it has less registry support than Registry Editor.

Not exceptional, but very useful. It is all that one asks him : to be convivial.

The program is okay, but it times-out, forcing you ( if you want to keep using it ), into downloading an update.
Not good, seems like the programmer plans to make it shareware one day and of course all the free versions will time-out leaving you with the choice to buy it or do without something you've gotten used to.
It's good, but I shall keep looking for one that I can keep for longer than 4 weeks or so.

I. Language
English translation is incomplete, some labels are still in German.

II. GUI
-Bookmarks only reachable through a separate window that needs to be opened.
-Useless and too large icons in toolbar.
-There's no 'add to bookmarks' quickbutton (need to open bookmarks window for that too!).
-After jumping to an address using the explorer bar the treeview doesn't follow (well, it does jump to the vicinity, but the actual node is not even visible sometimes).

III. Search
-There's no option to stop search after first found occurence, only to 'find all'.
-Search for a well-hidden registry key took 52secs (normal regedit did it in 63s), not much of an improvement.
-To my great annoyance I found that the search process ALWAYS starts at HIGH priority, that is unacceptable! And there's no option/setting to change this behaviour. This alone was enough to convince me not to use this util.
-DWORD/binary data are not searchable.

IV. Others
-Snapshot compare results only in HTML or text format - why not a tree?
-Program exited after 30secs of freezing my PC with 'memory violation' error. This happened only once though.
-'Registry tracker' menu option shown but not implemented.

Only really positive feature of this program that's missing from other registry editors (I've seen RegCool, RegEdExt, RegEditor, RegHance, Registry Organizer, Registry Workshop) is that complete subtrees can be copied from one node to another.

Rating: 3 = this isn't anything special.

This is an excellent utility. It's got a great interface and provides all for editing the registry. On top of that, it's free! You couldn't ask for more.

The good point with this regedit alternative is the price, free. Unfortunately it is unstable and slow. In my opinion it also needs a major gui rewrite.

As a IT professional, Windows registry is a big part of my job and life.
Compared with other Editors I like that RegCool can make SnapShots, can search in binary data and the properties dialog brings exactly the information I need.
Search Engine is superfast. Search for "micro" in RegCool and in the highly recommended Registry Workshop and you will be surprised. And there are more points why I prefer RegCool. Speed, features and stability are superb.
And that's for free.
This new version is working like a charm. all the changes are very welcomed.

Highly recommended !!!

Very good tool. Search engine is excellent and fast. Finds much more than Registry Workshop. RegCool has much more to offer, so why should I pay $29.95 for Registry Workshop if I can get the same or better for free? I have tested RegCool and couldn't find any bugs. Compared with Registry Workshop I don't see any great difference in speed and performance. Highly recommended !!!

ssb

ssb reviewed v3.010 on Jan 14, 2005

Buggy, slow and limited.
I suggest registry users to take a look to the excellent Registry Workshop, probably the best registry tool currently available.

The idea is good; but a lot of try you cannot DL the file - "File not found" tells the server. The surface is a little requiring habituation.
First i found not a easy menu, that I can replacing of keys in the complete REGISTRY. I then have found something after a few try and several attempts. All in all: For experiment-joyful users.

cricri_pingouin reviewed v3.003 on Aug 20, 2004

Ok, it got better.
The multi items search worked fine. A bit slow, but ok compared to another tool. And it got a progress bar so we know what it's doing!
The registry backup worked too, but still no progress bar or anything to tell you that it didn't crash. I think a progress bar would really help.
Now, the backups you make from "Tools->Backup", may it be a ref or hive file, are NOT compatible with the "Compare registries" feature! So you HAVE to use the "Compare registries" if you want to compare registries, you could have thought that you could compare a backup, but no.
There's also a "Edit->Registry->Export" thingy. Why not just stick to one format for everything, including comparisons, backup and all? Don't worry though, "Edit->Registry->Export" doesn't do anything.
In the menu, there are also several items which are in German. I'm not English, but I certainly can't read German. So I don't know if I missed some features.
However, having tried it earlier, it still got a bit better, but still has a long way to go.
3 stars for effort and to encourage the author to get things together :) Meanwhile, I'm going to uninstall it, it's still not useful as it stands (or at least, everything it does can be done in a better way by other software).

Two observations :
1. Compared to "Registry Workshop"
- It is very slow indeed
- It has big & ugly toolbar icons.

2. Compared to Regedit32
I do not understand people comparing it with Regedit32 since Regedit32
- does only a step by step search
- does not even have a toolbar
Can those who compare RegCool with Regedit32 please be more specific (I might be missing something w.r.t. Regedit32).

What can i say for this slow and buggy utility? Don't spend your time with this. WinXP regedit searches whole registry in less than half time.
If you want a real tool, get the excellent "Registry Workshop" or Registry Crawler.

I have to revise my (optimistic) earlier Vote...
Usefull in Win9x, but XP, w2k(3) don't need them,
regedt32 searches faster, and "plainer" (right vocable?). ^L^

cricri_pingouin

cricri_pingouin reviewed v2.491 Beta 2 on Jun 11, 2004

I don't like flaming freebies, but unfortunately, I cannot find a good thing to say. First, it's slower then regedit (and I mean A LOT slower), so there is no point using it as a replacement.
However, I installed it for the registry comparison facility advertised, hoping for a free alternative to Active Registry Monitor. What a disappointment. Registry snapshots are slow as well, and the program does not do anything to tell you what is going on: no progress bar, no message, you can only rely on the "busy" mouse icon to gather that it's doing it's job. It did it slowly, but it did create registry backups. Then, I tried comparing two snapshots. Same problem, nothing to indicate what's the progress. After a good 20 minutes, I had a look again, and noticed that despite the mouse icon still being the busy one, suggesting the progam was working and hadn't finish (after 20 minutes!), I noted that the program was not using any CPU resources. So I can only asume it really didn't do anything all this time.
Highly disapointing, clearly not recommended, the only good point is that being at the rock bottom, we can only see it progressing and I look forward to that. 2 stars for being a free efort, and honestly, that's well paid. I'm looking forward to builds ready for testing though.

Crap.
It's a buggy version of regedit.
It does nothing new, it has no useful or even useless additional features.
I really do not see the point of this program.

I didnt tried it but i'll give it a 5 just to keep its rating. But why in the hell make a program identical to regedit ?? I mean, just looking at the description, you know that it'll be exactly like regedit so why not use regedit ??

5 stars without any doubt ! RegCool is a very good and user-friendly program. A search might perhaps be a little faster but that does not away with the 5 stars I gave it. Thank you so much Kurt Zimmermann for giving this beauty away for free.

The best free Registry editor! It loads very fast, has a great looking interface, export, import, compare registries functions. It has bookmarks to go to often used keys, confirmations for actions, can remember the last opened key and launch it at start. You can connect to remote registry, copy values, backup registry, open denied nodes. It integrates a great search tool which displays all the values available in the registry in a single window. You can search several values at a time, in specific registry places. After search, you can go to the found values by double clicking on them.
