When the author writes 'Registry Workshop is an advanced registry editor.', you can take it to the bank. I have tried and tested this great program for several years and can't think of another one that even comes close to the features offered by Registry Workshop. I'm confounded by the relatively low rating on this software too. I think it was some haters that didn't get their hands held long enough by the developer. Nevertheless this is outstanding software. Essential and utterly efficient in every way. If you are a power user, you need this in your toolbox. Only gripe is one that I have against all small, specialized utilities: if the OS costs $200 no single-use utility should cost for more than 10% of the OS price. You're just asking for pirates to pick it apart at $30.00.

This is a great piece of software. To the other reviewer: You cannot put too much weight on the rating any given software title gets on this site or any other. There are idiots galore who highly rate a stripped-down piece of freeware, or who rate down a great piece of shareware just because it's not free.

@ssb: it's too flat... It'll be nice an interface that matches at least Windows XP and not Windows 95. I know some people don't care about it but for me it's important. By the way, I've already purchased it last year. I was hoping to see something new in version 3.

The backup and restore features work fine for me, on all 4 of my systems.

Registry Workshop (which is a registry editor, not a "debug tool") has proven itself very reliable for me, regardless of what data types I work with, and no matter what registry locations I alter. The same cannot be said of other third-party registry utilities I have used.

The author is based in China, but uses the well-known and trusted payment processors RegNow and eMetrix. BetaNews is even a RegNow affiliate, and if you notice, the links they provide to the Registry Workshop home page are directed through their regnow.com affiliation. In short, there is no special risk because of the author's geographic location. I've emailed Xiaolin several times, and he is very receptive and helpful.

krgood

krgood reviewed v2.5.1 on Jan 22, 2006

The Program is nicely done, however the registry backup does not work properly. I contacted the author via the Support link in the Help menu and got a reply from "Xioalin" located in China saying the error message was from Windows, and that he had no idea what was wrong and would invistigate.
I think I will stay "on Shore" with my debug tools. I also am not crazy about with using my credit card for pruchases from China.

Hey jbc,

Binary search is now available on the best registry tool ever.

Laugh at that, you moron.

Kukac

Kukac reviewed v2.3.1 on Feb 9, 2005

This is a nice one. Among those registry editors I've tried (this one, RegHance, Regedit Extension, Registry Organizer, RegCool, and a few others) this is the one that suits my taste best.

A full registry backup took ~4 minutes which is a bit too much for my taste, the comparer can only compare opened .reg files and not 2 backups, so this is not the program I'll use for backups and tracking registry changes.

ssb

ssb reviewed v2.3.1 on Jan 25, 2005

Come on you guys, enough.
Personally i do like Registry Workshop, others don't, i can live with that :)
I know that many folks like free stuff, that's understandable. Well, RW isn't free although IMHO it worth every cent.

Personally speaking, i used to work in a corp environment with RegCrawler. That tool is more expensive than RW, buggy and limited in functionality. So i've switched to Registry Workshop, after trying a few other tools.
After months using it, i'm very pleased with all its features and author's response to my suggestions and bug reports.

Now if jbc or any other thinks he knows a better tool than RegWorkshop, please give more details and i will try it.
Otherwise, if you only want to post negative comments, then do that, i don't care because i'm not RW's author. Just try to be polite to the rest reviewers.

jbc

jbc reviewed v2.3.1 on Jan 24, 2005

Haha... Inray is obviously a person who must grow first. Gives 5 stars for a tool and this tool is unable to do a search in binary values.
I want to see the person who pays $29.95 for this useless tool. Every freeware tool does the job better and faster. Not to mention other bugs.
It also needs a major gui rewrite. 5 stars for this useless tool...I can't imagine any IT professionals can do their job with this buggy tool.

rrrr, have you seen many "unstable" software like RW, besides those ones you like ?
Registry Workshop, is one of the best tools, like it or not. A simple try will convince even the most distrustful user.

BTW, registering in FileForum, under different nicknames, just to post negative comments doesn't make RW better or worst. It only proves your attitude and Registry Workshop's uncontradictable quality.

rrrr

rrrr reviewed v2.3.0 on Jan 24, 2005

Why pay for a unstable and slow product? There are many alternatives on the market. Search for binary values is not implemented. I need a professionell tool and not something for beginners. Forget this buggy tool.

I don't understand you all folks.
I like Registry Workshop because of its unique features like superfast searching thet never failed on me, MDI interface with multiple local, remote, or file registry segments, reg backup & restore, defragment, multiple Undo - Redo, bookmarks (!), synch, multiple registry comparisons and many others.
Those functions can only be found in Registry Workshop and work flawlessly all time.

You say that X utility is better than Registry Workshop, OK i respect that although i disagree because i was searching for such a tool, years now. You know what i found ? Buggy untrusted freewares and sharewares with limited functionality and support.

I suggest anyone who needs such a registry tool, try them all (3-4 only exist). Finally give RegWorkshop a try and you will know why I rate it with 5.
It's not that RW is the best tool ever found, simply the rest are crap.

With respect to the opinion of Inray, i must say, that i'm not kidding (hope Inray can say, why RegCool is badder than this $29.95 tool) and i have tested RegCool and this tool. Why pay $29.95 if i get the same for free? I like the search, which is superfast and it finds everything - Registry Workshop is BUGGY and he finds not all data. Unfortunately i can only rate it with 1 !

[Note: Price was not a factor in my rating of this software.]

I've used them all, and there aren't any better comprehensive registry utilities out there--especially freeware. Please, if you think there is a better freeware solution, do name them for us. You can't, because they simply don't exist. Rate software as you see fit, but don't blow smoke up our butts, OK?

If you find what you think is a shortcoming in Registry Workshop, send an email to the author. If it is a worthwhile suggestion, there is a very good chance that he will implement it, and soon. I've done exactly that about six times or more, and that accounts for a lot of the recent changes you see here.

Edit: I wrote the author of Registry Workshop regarding the binary data search issue, and he assures me that he will look into it. (Wow, those were a tough four seconds of my life.)

BTW, opening HKCR is just as fast on my system with Registry Workshop as it is with Regedit.

ssb

ssb reviewed v2.2.0 on Jan 4, 2005

This program is the best registry tool ever tried. Every version, even minor ones, adds new features necessary for IT professionals and advanced users.

I don't know why some people like "xml" don't like it, but that's their opinion and i have to respect that.
BTW xml, could you please make us a favorite, giving an example of those better freeware registry tools ? As a computer tech engineer, Windows registry is a part of my life and i ensure you that never found a better reg management tool than Registry Workshop.

I've tried apps like Registry Crawler, RegEditX, Resplendent Registrar and many others. None of them comes close to RW in terms of quality, stability, speed and features. No need to say that most of them are just useless garbage.

Registry Workshop is a "must-have"
Unfortunately i can only rate it with five !

xml

xml reviewed v2.2.0 on Jan 3, 2005

Opening HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT takes some seconds. RegEdit is much faster. Finding binary data is something this program doesn't understand. What can i say for this utility? Don't spend your time with this. There are freeware programs out and they do their job much better.

Inray

Inray reviewed v2.2.0 on Jan 2, 2005

More features included to my favorite registry tool, that's great.
What can i say about Registry Workshop, this small program is a must have. I was one of the first who got it registered and never regreted. Actually i can't work without it.

Highly recommended !!!

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v2.2.0 on Dec 31, 2004

Haha... Obviously, a person who can't see the benefits of Registry Workshop over Regedit has no need to edit the registry in the first place.

With the 2.2.0 release, the author has once again implemented my suggestions... I just love it! I've had nothing but perfect reliability from Registry Workshop (unlike some of its competitors).

ssb

ssb reviewed v2.1.0 on Dec 20, 2004

checkmaster, i don't understand your point. You say that regedit is better than this excellent tool ? Are you kidding or just dislike any program that costs more than nothing ?

Registry Workshop, searches whole registry in a loaded machine in less than 5-10 secs (Regedit: 71 sec)
RW can copy-paste whole registry branches, use wildcard searches, compare registries (local and remote), do reg snapshots, undo & redo, save changes history, compacting registry, and many many other things necessary for daily registry tasks.

Do you know any other tool that has all those features ? You say that RW is buggy. I ensure you that it's not. I'm using it for hours every day and never had any problem.

I really respect your opinion, but don't call a program bad just because you don't want to pay for it.

checkmaster

Strongly suggested for all advanced users.

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v2.0.1 on Oct 18, 2004

Another version, another review. I'm not nuts; I just appreciate the fact that the author took yet another one of my (admittedly excellent) suggestions. This time, it was the "/g" command line switch, to open Registry Workshop directly to a specified registry key. Great stuff! (Oops, I mean "/great stuff!")

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v2.0.0 on Sep 23, 2004

I still use Registry Workshop, and I am glad to say that the author has implemented some of my suggestions. The version 2.0 update doesn't sport quite as much in the way of changes as I'd expect for a major version bump, but the changes to the undo feature are very worthwhile nonetheless.

Registry Workshop is absolutely the best all-around registry utility available.

Inray

Inray reviewed v2.0.0 on Sep 22, 2004

The best registry tool, is even better now. Think the posibilities using new version's registry compare function. It can compare local registry with saved snapshots or remote machines!
And of course it's even faster than before.

I wish i could rate this gem with ten or more stars !!!

It's a must have tool for every professional, or advanced user.

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v1.6.5 on Aug 8, 2004

I reluctantly installed Registry Workshop, not expecting much from it. I've used Registry Crawler, RegEditX, and Resplendent Registrar for years. From what I have seen, Registry Workshop is capable of replacing all of them.

I have the Favorites sub-window nicely docked in the lower right part of the window, to the right of the history and find results pane. This is quite ideal, and much handier than flipping back-and-forth multiple windows, as the other utilities force you to do.

As always, I have a few nitpicks, such as the fact that there is no text box where you can directly enter a registry key path, to go right to it (instead, you have to select Search > "Go To" or press Ctrl+G). Also, the font on my system is incredibly tiny, and cannot be changed. I think it would also be nice if Registry Workshop could automatically elevate registry key permissions when delete operations were being performed (as Resplendent Registrar does). However, I suggested all of these things to the author, and he responded immediately to tell me that he would make these changes for the next version! (And here, I expected to be ignored.)

I haven't used Registry Workshop long enough to test it thoroughly, but I like what I see so far. It lacks some of Resplendent Registrar's more heavy-duty functions (such as a real-time registry monitor), but then again, Resplendent Registrar has some annoying bugs and design shortcomings, too, which never get fixed, even though I have pointed them out to the author.

I still cannot believe that this one is far better than awarded RC and is also an advanced registry editor, with undo-redo, history, compactor, wildcard searches, backup and restore and many other functions.
Registry Workshop, is now one of my favorite every-day use tools. Get it.
