This program does not connect on my WinXP SP3 using a D-Link Router DIR 615. I tried to forward Port 7812 on the router, enabled this port in the Windows Firewall, I enabled RetroShare in Windows Firewall completely, I tried to change the port (to avoid a port blocking by my ISP) - no way!
May be, this works for others - but not for me. And the reason for my very low rating: I've been searching several sources for connecting errors/problems - without a result.
I can not afford wasting hours of my time, working like Sherlock Homes simply to find out more about the reason for such errors.
All I know is: DHT doesn't work (although it is enabled), NAT the same... to make it short: RetroShare is blind, deaf and dumb.
And, fans of RetroShare (and/or Developers): StealthNet as well as Kommute for example (also anonymous file sharing clients) need forwarded ports and they work without any problem on my machine. I use utorrent from time to time - the same: No problem.
Every other program is able to connect though the forwarded ports.
Supplement: Now I know why DHT doesn't work - it has been shut down a longer time ago. This means, someone really have to know people using RetroShare... which is even worse than before. Anonymous file sharing in the way Retro Share works is secure, as long as there are enough hops to route the traffic through. A few nodes can be tracked - even with nearly perfect cryptographic technology.
As a conclusion: RetroShare is DEAD.
No matter if there are a few fans out there: Fans watch their 'favorite toy' with only one eye anyway, so they refuse to realize the reality (that's why they a r e fans). Anonymizing filesharing clients need enough nodes to route the traffic (to hide and stealth sender as well as receiver). And telling somebody a FRIEND is simply S_I_L_L_Y. In a time when most of the people out there watching for a possibility to gain only a few cents (watch the constantly growing number of fakers, who spread advertisements on any website as well as on every network) there is hardly a chance to know who to trust in. People are corrupt nowadays - and many of the persons we still trust in have already changed their minds in the darkness of the night and 'earn' their money selling their 'knowledge' to RIAA for example.
So once again: 'Friends' do not exist in a filesharing network. I distrust every single person and as long as a program like RetroShare is connected only to a few nodes it is not a bit more secure than eMule or any Gnutella-client.
So I correct my rating to the lowest possible: 1
