I was using ObjectDock until my disk drive ate itself and when I tried to reinstall it, found it was no longer free. I missed the convenience so I thought I would give this a try, very nice program, light weight and easy to configure.

Very nice dock, but since the 1.3x release it has been very unstable. It crashes on launch, asking if I want to "Should Rocketdock load the default icons?". After customizing and tweaking it for 30-45 minutes, no, I don't. This release, 1.3.3, won't even launch. It just throws an error.

It's ok, but RK Launcher by Yoni is way better. This program can use a lot of memory if you set everything on high graphics, but it doesn't suck. I think RK Launcher by Yoni is the best because it doesn't take much memory at all to run, has way better icon selections and shows any window when minimized into the dock.

I would recommend this second to RK Launcher by Yoni. You can find Yoni's RK Launcher at WinMatrix.com by searching for RK Launcher in the google field at the bottom of WinMatrix's website. I recommend download the dock with the reflective icons.

I've been using RocketDock for quite awhile now and it works beautifully. Never a problem! I have no idea what Blaxima is talking about in regards to the memory this program uses. On my Windows Xp, RocketDock utilizes 6264k of memory, while YzDock uses 7204k. So I have to call BS on that one. Also, YzDock doesn't behave properly on my system; it won't autohide at all. No thanks, Blaxima, I believe I'll stick to RocketDock.

WOW, what a waste of memory. This thing has 10x the footprint that YzDock has. I rate this one as the worst of the dock programs. Depending on what you really need it for I say your better off with

1.YzDock
2.RkLauncher
3.Object Dock
4.RocketDock

Well the app has nice eye candy, but thats about it.

If you're running with the explorer shell, it's absolutely useless cause it's just redundant functionality of what windows already has. So I decided to try using it instead of explorer, and it just crashes too much to be a replacement. I know most people won't consider once a day a lot, but considering I usually only have explorer crash once a week, thats a lot.

The other problem I had was that after about a day of using it, all the system shortcuts (My Computer, Network Places, etc.) all stopped working correctly.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.3.1 on Mar 20, 2007

Getting better all the time.

Still, it lacks 2 key features for me. The first is an option to set it to reserve the screen space it takes up so that like the Windows Taskbar and Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar, it will force app windows to border only up to the edge of the dock and not the edge of the screen.

The second is, again like those two apps, to be able to extend itself so that it takes up the full width or height of the screen, whether it is set to appear on the side or on the top or bottom.

If those features were added, I think it would really beat out most everything else it competes against, or at least be right up there on the top tier.

works great but likes to crash when certain progs that reside in tray are minimized to the dock (thunderbird tray for one). Also if you specify too many folders of icons it chokes. The ini file needs to be put in a specified folder not on c drive during install (along with your ONE custom icons folder).
other than that works quite well

Works. Best of all docks I have tested. conclusion is...

1. RocketDock ( Works stable, Simply enough and NO bugs occured) ;) still using it.
2. ObjectDock ( Full of features but some problems )
3. RK Launcher (Used lot of Mem for some reason... =( and lot of bugs occured )

Ofc OD has more features but still RD is better... for me anyway. ^^

bobad

Nice. Very nice. Ver 1.2 was my favorite dock, and Ver 1.3 attempted to make it even better by adding portability via an INI file. Reducing registry bloat and portability is always a good thing. However, when I switch to saving the configuration in an INI file, RD fails to load, and reverts to "default icons". Because of this defect, I have lost 30 minutes of tweaking 3 times. The problem was reported in the betas, and wasn't fixed in the final. "A" for effort, "F" for debugging! Back to Ver 1.2, and using a batch file to save a registry patch! :(

Free. Works very well. Very stable.
Mine is at 14 megs of ram use, not even a blip with 2 gigls of system ram.
Configurable, skinnable, hideable, placeable, and very useful.

I hide my regular XP toolbar and have this one with a semi-transparent background with my 23 most used shortcuts visible.

A++++++ Great job ! Highly Recommended, would download again

I really enjoy using this app. Well made and constant improvements.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.3.0 Beta 6 on Jan 16, 2007

INI files is a total improvement.

The Registry puts all your eggs in one basket and if it goes wonky, you are screwed.

INI files can be isolated, are standard ASCII TEXT files that can be easily and quickly edited, copied, parsed, searched, etc.

Just because the registry is "newer" does NOT mean it is better.

I would like the option of turning on tabs too, as well as the ability to have it auto-stretch from edge to edge like the Microsoft Office Toolbar can when it is docked. Fills up the entire height on the right side of my screen no matter how many icons I have, so it looks consistent, plus, it can block out / reserve that screen space so any app I run just butts right up against it if I maximize it, meaning it's always "on top" but in a way that doesn't allow apps to extend underneath it.

Still, I'm a fan of the app and hope it keeps getting better.

TC17 reviewed v1.3.0 Beta 4 on Jan 14, 2007

Its a nice program, however I'm only giving it a 3 due to 2 reasons. They have made this beta totally unusable. It prompts/warns you EVERY time you reboot the computer that its a beta, which is just stupid.

The other thing I don't like is that it has no tab support like objectdock has. The author seems stubborn about adding features for some reason.

bobad

bobad reviewed v1.3.0 Beta 4 on Jan 11, 2007

When this program was first released around a year ago, I requested the settings be stored in the INI file. The authors took offense, and nearly ran me off their board. INI files are obsolete, you idiot. Well guess what? Looks like they are starting to grow up! Fine program guys. Highly recommended. Congratulations, and keep it going.

Great update!
I've very happy about the "Added ability to store all settings in Settings.ini"

Highly recommend this to everyone (that needs this king of launcher). If someone does not like it, here are some alternatives:
1. RK Launcher (still in beta and not updated for some time)
2. YZDock (the "mother o all", development closed from what I know)
3. ObjectDock (quite bloated in my opinion, but worth to try)

However when installing it, all goes well 'till it gets to the last step and nothing hapens.
Anyone else have any problems.

I also chose this over ObjectDock Plus.

bobad

bobad reviewed v1.3.0 Beta 1 on Jan 4, 2007

Excellent update! When the INI file usage is successfully implemented and de-bugged, RocketDock will be be the best dock by far!

That said, this release is pretty buggy... not unexpected for Beta1. WHen launching the program, it can not load the INI file, and asks to revert to the standard icons. Well THAT just cost me 30 minutes of work! :(

Quite impressive. I am using RocketDock to replace ObjectDock Plus which was causing lockups on my system. This program is faster and is not conflicting with my other software. Now if only they would add tabs my life would be complete :-)This is one really useful program.

bobad

bobad reviewed v1.2.5 on Aug 17, 2006

I think this is the best dock available right now, Freeware or Shareware. It behaves in a very intuitive way, and is extremely well coded. A big disappointment is, there is no way to save your dock configuration. I just timed myself, and it took me 45 minutes to set up my dock and apps exactly as I like. (Admittedly, I use a lot of icons, 32!) There should be an INI file for USB drive portability, or at least a "Save Dock As..." option. The only way to save it for USB transport is to export the registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RocketDock). What a drag on an otherwise perfect program. Another slight deficiency is, there should be an option to truncate the ".exe" on icon names. Though relitavely minor, that would save a lot of tedious icon editing to remove the tacky file extensions. Great program, try it! But do export a REG file or risk losing your settings.

A fantastic and useful application that works very well for what it does. Easy to configure with great skinning options and more docklets to add.
I might get back into using it more as I have now started using Desktop Sidebar and so place my shortcuts on there.

Great application and good support via their forums.

netean

netean reviewed v1.2.5 on Aug 17, 2006

Thought I'd revisit this again:

This does work really well, looks nice, smoothly animates etc. Drag and drop icons on to the dock works superbly.

I have just dragged my windows quicklaunch and desktop toolbar to the top of my screen it does the same job (without the animation of course)

I'd like to see support for extendedable menus - so that I could add lots of program to a drop down menu without eating screen space. Would also like to see system tray support and maybe even start menu support so I could get rid of my windows toolbars altogether.

As it is now... it looks and works well, but (personally) I still can't find a reason for using it.

i agree with the guy before me. this program is a very nice docking program -- compares favorably to Object Dock for instance. but i don't understand the point if you can already put stuff in the quicklaunch ...

maybe just to make it look like a Mac ...

netean

netean reviewed v1.2.0 on May 16, 2006

well. it's OK... I don't really get the point of any of these dock programs. it does what my computer already does.

Wish it didn't eat 8mb of ram though, 8mb isn't a lot, but when it doesn't seem to do that much it seems a lot.

If you like docks, this is pretty good.

bobad

This program is very rough. There is no way to save your settings, so a re-install or a Restore of Windows results in losing all your settings. Anyone who likes docks and fiddles with them knows it can take hours to get them just right, and once is enough. An INI file or a "Save Theme" would add tremendous value to this program.

I have just downloaded the new RocketDock Beta 2 (available on their forums). Bummer some new bugs have been brought up. I also have seen Bobad's posts on the Punk! Software forums. He began by insulting the devlopers and became upset when they defended themsevles. Anyways, I will not turn this into a discussion. I hope the next beta or final fixes some of the annoyances.

bobad

bobad reviewed v1.1.2 Beta 1 on Dec 13, 2005

RocketDock is a very nice little dock program. Try it, enjoy it as it is. Don't get attached to it, because the author is not receptive to normal suggestions or polite criticism. My experience with arrogant, sarcastic, or indifferent authors is that their programs fade away. Too bad, because I think RocketDock is a nice program, and I really do like it. Try it, and I think you will like it too. But if you find a bug or would like a feature added, don't count on any support from the author. Maybe you can stroke his ego or beg and get his attention. But normal, polite remarks and requests do not work.

FallenNature

FallenNature reviewed v1.1.2 Beta 1 on Dec 13, 2005

I noticed all final versions of RocketDock have an installer, they must just do this for beta releases. Kind of good since betas can constantly be changed. The ObjectDock Docklet support is coming along nicely even if it is limited. Drag and drop works great. Oh and my favorite feature is compatibility with all the other dock themes out there. Also notice they have a "Do Not Redistribute" notice for betas. Tisk tisk FIleForum. Anywho, I think it is coming along quite nicely.

The only problem with this program is that there is a slight 1 second delay when you click any icon, and that drives my nuts, I end up double clicking and opening several windows.
I first believed that it was a setting in the options menu but I couldn't find anything about it.
The dock itself and the effects are ok.

simian reviewed v1.1.2 Beta 1 on Dec 12, 2005

Although a good start, this program is slow, stodgy, and lacks the ability to be configured. I like the idea but the execution is sloppy.

I suggest RKLauncher instead.

eblade

eblade reviewed v1.1.2 Beta 1 on Dec 12, 2005

This program sounds really neat. So, I download it. There's no installation. That's not neat.

I don't like the zooming icon thingee, so I set the zoom icons to the same size as the non-zoomed icons. That didn't work. Then I set the zoom icons to smaller than the non-zoomed icons. That didn't work either.

It doesn't seem to support drag and drop, and I would definitely expect some application like this to do so. (Maybe I just used OS/2 for too long, as I've never tried a launcher app in Windows.. and almost nothing drag and drops in in Xwindows)

I'm not sure if I expect too much, or if the program delivers too little. Not a fan, here.
