Pretty good. Tried some videos and some songs. Easy to configure.

The new versioning scheme is absurd and ridiculous. I do not want dates but version numbers since a date does not tell anything about the maturity of the product.

No blank screen when playing media through an S-Video cable to LCD TV, unlike most all other players outside of QuickTime.

Nice and clean layout, but that about all the positive this player has.

Worksa treat! The only thing that puzzles me is why it needs to cache the system fonts on first use and then occasionally thereafter. Use it all the time for everything - more versatile than VLC.

AHH crash and fail all video, meanwhile use original mplayer without any problem.
I think this is the worst mplayer gui ever.

I had a few crashes when I played a bit with the filters, but apart from that this player is really nice. Clean interface, powerful and a great set of options. I still use GomPlayer but I will keep an eye on this player for sure.

Excelente reproductor, tiene codecs integrado y reproduce los archivos con una imagen muy nitida. Soporta la mayoría de formatos multimedia conocidos.

I've used this with a lot of video without issues (I love the SKIP buttons).

However, I normally use another program for DVD's; when I tested it to rate this new version of SMPlayer it couldn't properly play "Shrek the Third." The disc made a lot of noise and it finally started in the Special Features some place. I could play the movie after locating it but not playing a DVD correctly is a pretty major issue.

I find that KMPlayer, SMPlayer, Zoom Player and Windows Media Player Classic are all good players.

Recommendation:
I have to recommend most people start with WMP Classic by installing it with the K-Lite codec package. Search for it at BetaNews, Google, or try www.free-codecs.com . If you only watch DVD movies, SMPlayer is not the program for you.

amweiss157 reviewed v0.6.0 Preview 1 on Jan 23, 2008

Has problems in Vista with an nVidia card, they claim it's a driver problem but VLC, KMPlayer and others seem to be able to render opengl video in the same window with no problem. If the separate mplayer window would remember settings this would be a 5.

Still a great player.

DudeBoyz reviewed v0.6.0 Preview 1 on Jan 23, 2008

Player seems very lean, very clean.

Variable speed playback actually seems to work (Windows Media Player 9 doesn't work right on some types, like xvid)

Plays MKV without having to install some sort of advanced codec pack.

Does it use internal, self contained code instead of relying on individual codecs?

This player is absolutely perfect for me.
I don´t like flashy skins like jetaudio. In fact, I can´t stand apps that are skinned by default. I want my desktop to be consistent.
This program has a nice clean interface. The default button icon set is terrible, but there are other nice icons available, with the Tango set this app looks great.
I have thrown every file format I have available at this player and it plays them all flawlessly.
I have used MPC, Rulesplayer, VLC and others. All of those have their strong advantages but I always wanted to see that combined in one player. SMPlayer seems to be that player for me. Highly recommended.

Well, aside the lame look. I still think JetAudio is better. JetAudio does, what I want it to do. This program doesn't seem to really be that interesting. JetAudio broadcasts, plays, rips, burns, and converts. Plus the Newer versions of JetAudio has one added feature. A Media player, like MusicMatch, for those who are fermilure with the good ol' reliable MusicMatch, befor Yahoo, thrashed it.

Don't think this program is that flexible.

isaacg, i use mplayer2 also but it crashes with .wvx streams, usually after 1 minute.

isaacg

isaacg reviewed v0.5.60 on Sep 21, 2007

CharlieGimbert: Start > Run > type: mplayer2 > OK
Can't get much lighter than that.

SMPlayer seems to play everything I can throw at it. Not as clunky as VLC. Still not sure it's better than Media Player Classic though.

Needless bloated GUI for a sleek mediaplayer like mplayer. If you must have a GUI, at least have one that minimally intrudes on the application like MPF which you can check out here: http://mpf.dzm.hu/

Haha.....

Anyhow, its promising but really unnecessary in the PC world considering we already have Mplayer and VLC.

Not Vista Friendly. And connects to web server for no reason considering it's suppose to have all the codec's included.
