MikTex is abandonware and is no longer developed, and it's not expensive if you want the XML and HTML save/export features of SciWriter.

SciWriter's customizability and design that is centered around writing papers -- and specifically equations and proofs in papers -- is quite incredible. Good export capabilities, an XML file format, and great price make this a very very nice app to have if you need its features.
