If you're terrified of disabling the Messenger service manually, here is a freeware utility that can do it for you (I just saved you $30):

Kinda pathetic really making this program shareware just to change one simple setting in services. Who on earth would pay to use this program? Anwsers on back of a postcard please!

I have not downloaded this software and I have not tried it out as I see no reason to spend the resources on something that is easily accomplished manually. To do what this program does (aside from "checking every second that messenger stays off, I have never had any instance where messenger was turned on or off by anyone other than myself so this seems a little redundant unless you are not running a firewall) In Windows XP Pro Go To Start > Run > Type in "services.msc" (without the quotes obviously) > Scroll down until you find the service titled "Messenger" Right click and click "stop" then double click it and select from the "start up type" menu "disabled." Install a firewall I recommend Sygate Personal Firewall Pro or Free, now no more messenger ads and if you weren't running a firewall more security especially if you take the time to learn how to maintain one as to maximize its security potential.
