Soulseek at version 2016.1.24, the program has improved a lot since my last review.

...adding to smaragdus' comments, don't know how many times I've had to restart this new and improved piece of garbage just to get a selected file to start finally downloading. You also have to restart sometimes after initial startup just to get it to index your files for sharing, as smaragdus stated below.

Given that this thing is now requiring constant updates, I give it 2 1/2 stars now.

Soulseek broke the one basic rule... If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Soulseek NS was excellent but these new Soulseek QT builds are terrible. Since old Soulseek NS does not support Unicode I decided to upgrade to the QT version (Soulseek 2013.07.01), which turned out to be a total failure. The interface is messy and confusing, it does not even have a context menu when it is minimized to tray for example, so it cannot be shut down via right click on its icon and choose 'Exit'. More, old Soulseek NS could index 300 GB for less than a minute, while this one did not manage to index anything for about an hour, I always got the message that 'It seems that you are not sharing anything'. Any time I tried to perform a search it always froze and the only way to close it was via the task manager. I tried to report the problems I had encountered in Soulseek forum but this was not possible- my old account had been deleted and I could not create a new one because I always got this message: 'The spam filter installed on this site is currently unavailable. Per site policy, we are unable to accept new submissions until that problem is resolved. Please try resubmitting the form in a couple of minutes.'. After a couple of hours I still got the same message. I did not investigate what hidden processes was Soulseek 2013.07.01 running since after a dozen crashes I gave up, uninstalled it and reverted to good old version Soulseek 1.57 NS 13e. Perhaps user 'Zootopia3001' is right and new Soulseek QT might be a BitCoin miner. The old, archaic, 4 years old and no longer supported Soulseek NS works like a charm on Windows 8 while this new version of Soulseek is extremely crash-prone, it fails to index files, it fails to search files, so it is totally useless.

The 'new and improved' Soulseek is such a drag on the system. Don't know what's running with it that makes it that way now, but my guess is that it's a BitCoin miner. Version 1.57 was sooooo much better.

Soulseek 1.56 was the best p2p client of all time, 1.57 it's incredible unstable and invasive, pure crap.

Great program!! I've used it for years now and it finds all the obscure stuff that others like Limewire can never find! No adware or viruses! and perfectly easy to use!
Only downpoint is it doesn't search for alternative sources like Limewire does, so if the user goes offline you have to find the file somewhere else, but hey, I think its well worth it!

Nice to see that it's still under development. Not the greatest interface, but certainly does the job well.

This version feels zippier than the older one I had been using. However, the one major annoyance the carries over is that any click on a list box item produces a ding sound.

NO JUNK! (unlike gnutella)
Alot of high quality music (most aren't that 128 kbps junk)
alot of rare and underground music
NO SPYWARE

and as far as i know the RIAA hasn't really taken a big interest in sewing people using this...

Great for singles mainly

This is far and away the best file sharing program available. It is fast, ive found every file ive searched for withthe exception of an early ep from an unknown band, you can download complete albums if htey are in a folder, and you choose who you share with. the only downside to the program are the douches that are in the chatrooms. while many are helpful the most vociferous are aholes with too much time on thier hands. their bad but not so bad that i wont give this a five. oh and you might be better served getting the stable 156 from their site it connects to more comps and is more stable

faero

faero reviewed v157 test 8 on Nov 14, 2005

Soulseek is the BEST way to get music. There is really no question about it. You can find practically anything on there, even if it is a relatively unpopular band's brand-new first release. But, it is wanting. The GUI could use a lot of work, it is damned ugly. It just has a very ugly feel to it. If the GUI were more polished, this would be a 5 hands down.

Noogle

Noogle reviewed v157 test 8 on Aug 14, 2005

Still stable, fast and Spyware free. Granted, because of the project's nature it's not going to give everyone equal performance (though assigning a dedicated port for it makes a world of difference). But it even beats Audiogalaxy, which says a lot.

Everyone should note that any clients past version 156c is a running test of Soulseek's new operating style and should be approached as such--experimental.

That being said, Soulseek is definitely the best file sharing software around.

i agree that it's the best for finding music, excellent for popular stuff but equally good for the rarer stuff. the anility to download an entire folder makes this better than anhything else for downloading music. the only reason why i don't give a 5 is because no matter which version i use, it's never really stable... it's sluggish, server goes down a lot, etc. but it has been getting slightglty better with the more recent versions

You can use this with pop music and rare . I have always enjoyed the fact you can download folders and find full cd's . This and cabos p2p will stay on my pc .

i consider slsk as the best p2p software for exchanging any kind of music that is not in the charts. it comes with useful features and in the last years i was using it i experienced only a few crashes or smaller bugs. since i use windows more than linux i can live with that. i rate this program 5

I'm sorry but this program is useless.

I port-forwarded the respective port and I still can't get any search results. The firewall "test" passed with flying colors, but I still can't get any results.

eMule is still the best.

Nikkie

Nikkie reviewed v155 Build 222 on Feb 6, 2005

Great for rare files but painfuly slow . It depends on one user to download each file . No sources etc.

I use it for really rare files but it is not my default p2p client . It needs more work .

This software never leaves my rig, it simply IS the best music / file trading software out.

With a little bit of thought you can refine your searches incredibly well, sifting out about 99% of the junk.

Downloads can be a little slow, but with a small donation, network rights can be given to change your whole experience.

Its a small download with an amazing choice of stuff on offer, this IS 5/5 software people, dont knock it! its the nets best kept secret

Kartun_355

Kartun_355 reviewed v155 Build 219 on Jan 20, 2005

Very good p2p program, especially if you want to find some kind of new or very rare music. Network is really huge, but main disadvantage if the program is long que and slow search process ...

But I love this tool because it gives me much more NEW music then emule, bittorent or xdcc.

Noogle

The spiritual successor to Audiogalaxy and the best P2P I've seen in a while. Not that user-friendly and it has a very stoic interface, but I think the point is it disuade first-time and rookie users from using the service. It's a collector's program, though, so be prepared to share because Soulseek users frown upon leechers.

The service also has a load of chat channels and is an invaluable resource for anyone into music you don't hear on the radio.

And if it crashes your machine to the point of a format, then perhaps you shouldn't have a computer in the first place...

Great program except that it is a HUGE resource hog and will slow your system down. my win xp box crashed 2 times. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROGRAM DO NOT DOWNLOAD unless you like having to reinstall every thing and you like being on hold with MS
