Publisher's Description

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed. By setting a "kill bit" for spyware ActiveX controls, it can prevent the installation of any spyware ActiveX controls from a webpage. It does this while not interfering with "friendly" ActiveX controls - so your browser can work correctly and you can have peace of mind.

You won't get any more annoying "Yes/No" boxes popped up, asking you to install a spyware ActiveX control. In fact, Internet Explorer will never even download or run the spyware ActiveX control. In addition, it can prevent many of these spyware ActiveX controls from running, even if they are already installed on your system.

Hard to rate as it's always unknown whether its really stopped Spyware registry items being applied - However I never pick up any Spyware so SpywareBlaster probably helps a great deal, never caused any issues either.

@nilst2006, no offense but your a idiot.

Google Chrome has a built in Sandbox which means overall it's very secure. I'm not the biggest fan of Chrome, in general but to say its Spyware is absolutely ridiculous.

Used this program for years, but now I only use Chrome, and the program does nothing for Chrome, so I have to say bye.

But thank you for a great program, and for those who use one of the supported browsers, get this program.

I was hoping they might have included Chrome, & Safari. As I use neither IE8 or Fireflop I don't suppose it's worth having on any-more. A good program for those users though.

Spyware Blaster was recommended to me recently and I have just downloaded it to my Acer Laptop which is running Vista Home Basic. Prior to this I have been using Spybot Search & Destroy, but am really bothered by the "Changes to Registry" signs that pop up frequently when I attempt to use some programs. Hopefully with Spyware blaster this wont happen.

This works 100% perfectly and a must have for every PC! One of the best spyware immunization apps to date!

PS: Noticed all of nilst2006's reviews say "F'ed up my PC" "pure crap" etc.. He must have a very crappy computer lol. There is nothing wrong with the software he tries to put off as "crap" it's his personal computer that's pure crap. =D

EDIT: @ some guy
You must be going blind, or have your resolution WAY to low or just plain retarded. The FIRST thing in the description for Spyware Blaster is and I quote "SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed." If you still do not get it then here is the simple version: There is no scanner.

It is a welcome improvement. Its too bad that these kinds of updates are separated by 3+ years.

While a great antispyware tool, are immunizations from activex really necessary in a world of IE6SP2/IE7/Firefox/Opera? Ditto for cookie immunizations... :P.

The people who have IE6 or IE6SP1, who are still vulnerable to malicious activex exploits, will never know to find this software to protect themselves anyway :P.

Simple and straight-forward setup and software. It basically prevents the installation of adware and spyware via websites by blocking the latter in the first place. A great software on its own, or to compliment a real-time anti-spyware scanner or a the immunize feature from Spybot S&D.

Mastertech

Mastertech reviewed v3.5.1 on May 4, 2007

SpywareBlaster has NOTHING to do with your Host File and nothing to do with Pop-up blocking. SpywareBlaster provides protection against spyware, dialers, browser-hijackers and other malware or potentially unwanted programs. It BLOCKS their installation without any programs running in memory by using the zone based security built-in to IE and FF. Whether or not you get a "pop-up" or ad has NOTHING to do with SpywareBlaster.

RaGhul

RaGhul reviewed v3.5.1 on Apr 17, 2007

I agree with jon8rfc.

Most of us use Firefox (although the memory leak is starting to get VERY FOCKING annoying...) and SpyBot.

It's a nice concept:
PREVENT spyware instead of having to SCAN for it later... Train your HOSTS file, thus eliminating the 'real-time' scanner (and RAM drain)... but it doesn't work. Just a few minutes ago, I got a popup... and I was only surfing FileForum and MajorGeeks.

Keep tryin', Javacool. If you could get it to work, it'd be sweet!

siryak

siryak reviewed v3.5.1 on Apr 14, 2007

Excellent software!! This is not a scanner, but more of a preventer. It stops a lot of stuff from ever getting installed in the first place.

jon8rfc

jon8rfc reviewed v3.5.1 on Aug 4, 2006

This proved to be unnecessary when already having SpyBot, Firefox, and an effective HOSTS file in place--all of which are very commonly used among internet users.

My staples are Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and Spyware Terminator...a powerful trio.

The only real anti-spyware utility you need is COMMON SENSE. Dont install spyware. Learn to read. Make sure IE (if you use it) cannot autoinstall anything.

mfarmilo

mfarmilo reviewed v3.5.1 on Jan 2, 2006

Good program. But for those who run it once then think they can forget it - it really should be run regularly, to update its definitions and then block the latest baddies.

Just one point - most if not all of the blocks this one does are already in SpybotSD.

The only negative I have to say is that when they occasionally update the program itself, you have to manually re-download it rather than updating itself internally.

philosopherdog

philosopherdog reviewed v3.5.1 on Jan 2, 2006

Definitely the best thing I've used. Install it, run it once to enable the protections, and then you don't need to run it again. I haven't had spyware in years running this program. A total must have. I haven't checked out the update, but I'm sure it's solid.

bobad

bobad reviewed v3.5.1 on Jan 2, 2006

Excellent software! Highly recommended as part of the multi-layer protection needed today. One needs programs for AV, Anti-Trojan, active anti-spyware, and spyware immunity. SpywareBlaster provides a good part of the latter.

Just an interesting tidbit for the geeks among us: Spybot S&D now immunizes for 8413 spyware processes, SB for 5246. 1,554 of these immunities are redundant.

ModderXManiac

ModderXManiac reviewed v3.5.1 on Jan 2, 2006

This app, plus Spybot's immunization has enabled me to go for two and a half years without the need to run any spyware scans, it works that well.

With this, you can run IE without fear.

Okay..I'm in the middle here. The program is not exactly top of the line on security, but is best used as a backdrop for other antispyware quivers in your arsenal. You get the feeling quite often that this program is not doing anything much actually (specifics discussed by other reviewers), but then you feel guilty if you throw it out. i say it's worth having as a backdrop, but the idea that you have to pay to autoupdate this is pretty sad. this says freeware all over it.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why a blacklist is used, rather than a whitelist. How many ActiveX controls do you really want to use? I use one: Macromedia Flash.

Why wouldn't the author create a whitelist of safe controls, which would totally block all others by default? It would be less work, and it would be more secure! Why, why, WHY?

jpmccord

jpmccord reviewed v3.3 on Mar 12, 2005

I've installed it on Windows ME and Windows XP computers. Working in tandem with various antivirus programs, I have not had a SINGLE piece of spyware show up on ANY computer this has been installed on. To call this "great software" really should embarass you. It downloads a list of CLSID strings, and adds a registry value for them. Wow, gee whiz, and holy crap. He should just post a REG file with these strings in it, and save you all some time. But then again, he couldn't charge a subscription fee for that as readily.

The whole blacklist approach to rogue ActiveX control blocking is a flawed, nonsensical, losing battle. It makes about as much sense as blacklisting "from" addresses to block spam. And what happens when you try that? The spammers are constantly coming up with new "from" addresses, so it accomplishes almost nothing.

"So what is the solution, httpd.confused? Please do tell us!" The solution is two-fold: (1) Use a whitelist for ActiveX controls, not a blacklist (yes, Windows will let you do it, but I'm not here to teach you); and (2) Use Opera or Firefox whenever possible.

Carlospr

Carlospr reviewed v3.2 on Jul 10, 2004

SpywareBlaster is a great software and it is free. The fact that you have to update in order to use an updated software is not a major issue. Sometimes a developer has to make some code changes and the update is inevitable. By the way, now it works with FireFox!

  reviewed v3.1 on Apr 8, 2004

I complained because it is NOT clear that the database format itself changed, hence... why force an upgrade to the latest version? Do you see what I'm getting at? I'm not complaining about HOW one must upgrade to the latest version, I am complaining that one MUST upgrade to the latest version. I had wanted to stay with version 2.6, but I can no longer download database updates with it. And I do not find the version 3 interface better. It has cutesy blue color, but it offers me nothing that the prior version did not. The only reason for the overhaul was to sell the for-pay "autoupdate" service. And as for upgrading, you are advised by the author to uninstall the old version first--not to install over the old copy. Look at the version 3.1 notes; he even advises uninstalling 3.0 first. I appreciate free software, but when it comes right down to it, the main function of SpywareBlaster is just a simple registry edit--something that http://www.spywareguide.com/blockfile.php provides without requiring stupid installation and deinstallation of software.

daxno

daxno reviewed v3.1 on Apr 8, 2004

to 'anonymous': your complaining doesn't make any sence since version 3 is better than the previous version (has larger list, better GUI and has everal other improvements) and is still free. So why complain about upgrading ?

dzjepp

dzjepp reviewed v3.1 on Apr 8, 2004

Mr. Anon, it's always been that way, and it's no reason to give this program 1 star. :E If you want to update the core program, you need to download it from the website, always been that way. You can then update it on top of your old version install. New detection updates always worked via the program for me, and they work in 3.x as well.

  reviewed v3.0 on Apr 3, 2004

I just found out that SpywareBlaster 3.0 is a compulsory upgrade. If you try to obtain updates through the previous version (2.6.1), you can't--you get only a dialog that tells you that 3.0 exists, and that dialog has only an OK button. Click that button, and an Internet Explorer window is foisted upon you. This annoys me, especially since the main functions of SpywareBlaster could be replaced with a simple REG file download. Free or not, I hate that kind of garbage.

daxno

daxno reviewed v3.0 on Mar 31, 2004

A small and very effective program for stopping syware from ever infecting your computer. Unlike scanners that must be running on your pc all the time and can take a lot of memory, spyware blaster just creates a blocklist for IE/mozilla so spyware can't reach your system. New version also comes with an auto-update function which I find very useful. 5 stars program without a doubt.
