Utilities included in rent are used mostly for smaller, predictable premises (offices, especially small ones), where individual utilities consumption is not high.

Pros: A predictable monthly cost is convenient for the tenants
Less monthly work for the landlord
Cons: A predictable monthly cost is convenient for the tenants
Less monthly work for the landlord
Bottom Line: Utilities included in rent are used mostly for smaller, predictable premises (offices, especially small ones), where individual utilities consumption is not high.

Always the best, of course ;). The only shame is that they went closed source after being acquired by Microsoft. I don't blame them though, the source code was ABUSED heavily by both malware authors *and* even legitimate software authors. It was 'lifted' essentially. Of course, I'm sure the people who did such things later had issues, as code stealing will just cause them problems if they don't fully understand the code they are stealing. Such code stealing makes me sick, but it is prevalent in the industry ;o. Anyone can imagine such without even knowing the industry - knowing human nature is enough.

Sysinternals website provides utilities, tools, and technical resources to monitor, diagnose, troubleshoot and manage Windows systems and applications. It is a live service that allows execution of its tools directly from the web without manually searching and downloading them, but just entering the path into Windows explorer.

On second thought wscc updates both and you cannot compress them. Just delete the download folder after it's updated.
anomoly reviewed vBuild 11/16/10 on Nov 17, 2010
WSCC works with both this and the nirsoft suites as a gui for all the aps.
http://www.kls-soft.com/wscc/index.php
I use mostly only autoruns atm so it's kinda overkill for me.
Down wscc portable (not the portable ap or u3 crap) and this, extract this to a folder with the wscc inside, compress with ap compactor down to ~12.5mb, open wscc and use ".\Sysinternals Suite\" as the software location. Done and done. Nirsoft stuff is not nearly so easy to grab last I checked.

Changelog can be found here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/sysinternals/
Perhaps BetaNews could add it to the links above.
Use junction all the time, the others not so often and some never at all.
Much like the NirSoft utilities, the SysInternals Suite suffers from fragmentation. A gui-toolbox that would allow you to drop-in/snap-in the tools; possibly add a comment/Tip to the tool description line would make it much easier to access infrequently used SysUtilities.

Cogswell and Russinovich are a class act. One sees many ho-hum programs on the fileforum but even in these freebies one sees professionals at work.
I don't use these utilities all that often but when I do I can rely on then to do exactly what they're supposed to do.
Would be nice if they were a bit better integrated together (but that's the paid version.)
Anyway, highly recommended.

Incredibly useful set of tools for Windows, a must-have for your toolbox. I have this suite on every machine I set up, and couldn't do without them. It takes a little bit to figure out what's-what, as it's a bunch of separate utilities vs one big do-it-all program (as it should be), but once you do you'll wonder why you didn't grab these sooner.

Updates: ProcDump v2.0, Process Monitor v2.92, and a new Mark's Blog Post - Sysinternals Site Discussion - Site Home - TechNet Blogs
ProcDump v2.0: This major update to ProcDump, a tool that captures process dumps based on process CPU usage, memory consumption, and other behaviors, can now be configured to generate dumps based on the values of system performance counters.
Process Monitor v2.92: This update adds a toolbar button that makes the process tree dialog more accessible. In order to make it easy to zoom in on a particular time range in a trace, it also introduces two quick-filter context menu items that enable you to filter out events before or after a selected event.
Mark’s Blog: The Compound Case of the Outlook Hangs: Mark’s latest blog post comes directly from Microsoft support services and highlights the use of a relatively new Sysinternals tool to troubleshoot two issues causing long Outlook hangs.

Always the best. It is only a shame that people stealing their source code (especially malware authors) prevents them from keeping everything open source, as it once was. Of course, I saw many products that borrowed code from them, so I don't blame them one bit. Still, their code was a good educational tool in many cases and will be missed by those learning about the low level operations of the NT OS (though they can probably still get old source code).

Thanks Mr. Russinovich. Great job.

STILL not a frickin' suite. Bundling together a bunch of standalone programs, regardless of how powerful and valuable they are, does not make them a "suite."
I would expect at least a unified launcher/toolbar or something to justify the term. That said, all these progs are pretty much the best for what they are designed for. Mark Russinovich is a genius.

nteldata reviewed vBuild 4/1/10 on Apr 3, 2010
Well one of the reasons I think "Filemon" was removed is the fact that it could show the actions of hidden spy programs running in background. I don't believe they were seen by procmon. Now these programs are truly invisible. Microsoft was very nice to make Sysinternals available to us, but can we trust that it is going to accurately display malicious programs? I remember the original Winternals program and it had lots of features that we no longer see in this new scaled down version after Microsoft acquired the company. I wish I had the skills of Mark Russinovich, he's the Master IMHO.

An outstanding tool set for intermediate to professional users. Some do not have available alternatives (certainly not free) and some are simply the very best in their class, such as Autoruns.
If you need a lot eye candy in a gooey, then you should run, not walk, away from this package. Many of the tools can cause self-inflicted damage in the hands of someone who needs hand-holding. For example, because Autoruns does such an excellent job of exposing the finest grained account of auto-start code, a user can (some have!) disable core system functionality.
Many provide detailed information on a variety of system and software and may be interesting to even casual users.
Earlier references to Nirsoft are confusing, as Sysinternals and Nirsoft live together perfectly happily and have for the most part very different purposes. Both are composed of completely stand alone, individual utilities that do not require installation and are uninstalled as easily as deleting the files.

trevithick: Animus (yes, it is spelled with an 'u')? Emotions? Reread what I wrote, please. Also, the Sysinternals Suite is not beta software. And it is not about whether software works or not, it is also about how well software works without introducing additional code. Extreme Power Tools, for example. Once again, four out of five for introducing MS licensing code into an otherwise pristine package. Try not to bring misinterpretation into the reading of the reviews of others.

AvantAge reviewed vBuild 08/21/08 on Aug 27, 2008
Another kick for the 'I need a shared GUI' (read: Wizard) low-in-stature observed individual. Part of the greatness of these tools IS the fact they are not dependent upon one another, and most only have 1 or 2 files that make up the whole utility. No need to wait for the portable versions either - these are built for speed.
These two gentlemen were b(r)ought under the MS umbrella, but MS continues to let them have control over this package. Couple that and how the software hasn't been Balmer-ized (except EULAs), is a testament to their software engineering godliness and respect in the highest circles. If memory serves, early on these guys would write many utils ENTIRELY in straight assembly language...wow.
One non-a**kissing remark - how about a real changelog posted here when an update to the 'suite' is posted? Anyone? Bueller?
Metshrine reviewed vBuild 08/21/08 on Aug 23, 2008
This outstanding suite of tools has helped me find and eliminate spyware on more than one occasion. I can use process explorer to track down what processes are running which shouldn't be and which are likely spyware based on the past encounters. I then use a batch file and the pskill tool to help kill the processes so I can remove the files. Autoruns helps provide an overall system snapshot of what is going on throughout all portions of the system.
Overall, a highly useful suite of tools that I can't recommend enough to anyone who is an administrator or even a power user on their own PC. This is what all applications should be in terms of functionality!

Though argybee is correct in that it is more of a "collection" and the term "suite" may convince some that there is a front end, it's still contains some of the best best tools available to those that understand them. No need to lowball the rating due to wording.
argybee reviewed vBuild 08/08/08 on Aug 11, 2008
This is no more a 'single suite' of tools than it was 3 years ago. The tools themselves have hardly changed also. A 'zipped' 'collection of tools' would be more apt. I can see no reason for this release and (although the individual tools deserve more) this release gets a '1' for a cheap bump. Very disappointing.
Someone will make a tidy little front-end for it one day.

Sysinternal was so good that Windows bought it around a year or so ago. Of COURSE its a suite of utilities much like PSS Tools. Its a bunch of small applets that can be used for all manner of administrative functions from changing SID`s to zooming in on the Windows GUI. Its an EXCELLENT suite of tools. If it wasnt so good MS wouldnt have bought it.
Now because there ALL individuals tools why on earth would it require an executable when all the tools are either .exe`s for there designated function or command line based. What do you require a unified interface for when there all seperate tools which again have there OWN function. Thats like complaining that the ping command has no GUI and cant be integrated with the ipconfig command. Its as semantic as the day is long a throughly worthless argument purely because the poster isnt capable of understanding the administrative funtion that they provide. Theres no point in complaining that the scapel doesnt work when your not a surgeon.
Again there is NO need for any bunch of tools to communicate with each other. If there was a need they would NOT be seperate tools.
SuzzyWoozy reviewed vBuild 07/24/08 on Jul 25, 2008
The best system SUITE ever build. Period!
Reason:
- it has the best tools in each area (have tried similar programs but does not offer the same quality nor functionality)
- it is free
- is frequently updated.
I personally use the ProcessExplorer all the time, while the other tools only occasionally, when there there is a need for them. For this reason, the current distribution suits me best; if for some reason (one button Apple mouse users requires it?!) a "unified interface" will be created, I just hope that Mr. Russinivich will continue to provide the tools in the current distribution as well.
Regarding the comment "sweet if you are a geek", I would have to respectfully disagree with that and say only this: if unzipping a file, copy the content and executing one of the resulted files if "cumbersome and frustrating" then this suite is not for you joe.m... sorry :(
joe.m reviewed vBuild 07/24/08 on Jul 25, 2008
Although these tools are very useful. I found the whole package cumbersome and frustating and here's why:
1) It comes in a "ZIP" compressed file which leads me to reason number 2.
2) No installer! No "*.exe" or "*.msi" installer.
3) Most of the tools are command line based.
4) No unified interface.
5) This is no suite, a suite should have tools that can communicate with one another so that info is passed with little effort to next app in the suite much like MS Office does.
The tools here are make no mistake. But I find this so called suite, sweet if you are a geek. This file is a geeks dream come true. I was bit disappointed.

I have read the (rather funny) remarks of Databaseben bellow and I'm quite surprised: the sysinternals suite is quite user friendly... maybe you should give a try to WindowsPowerShell to see how a (real) SysAdministrator job is like.
...or a Unix/Linux flavor, for that mater.

The issue i have with Mr. Russinovich's utilities, if he is actually the one still writing them, is that i don't think he is smart enough to package the suite into a user friendly interface. Why doesn't he know how to make a control panel for them...???? Many of the lessor freewares by others can do as much.
The other issue is that chm's are still being used, when microsoft has canned this file format. Thus helpful information on the utilites are not easily accessiable to many nor does he provide a tip on the homesite regarding failed attempt to open help from his menu bars.
Therefore i give it a low rating, until making his utilites user friendly becomes a high priority.

I have been using utilities from Sysinternals for years now. It Mark wrote it - it deserves a '5.' Case closed.

I could not find more than a 10 rating. If anyone wants to crib over help or the higher level of technical inclination required to use these tools, i suggest you do just that and give these a miss as then these are not for you. If you want to help you can try writing up a few guides of your own if you are concerned about the ease of use for the others.
Above all Sysinternals Rocks.. And MS made a smart choice like most times to include them under their wing.

This is such an essential package for anyone who does PC Analyst / Tech work or administrators.
The fact that all utilities can be run from a USB Drive makes it an automatic download!
Even if they charged $$$ for this, it is worth it!

The best ever. Who cares if it has a control panel or not. these tools are the best in class and some of them are meant to be used in a dos box.
@DatabaseBen, it's easy to call somebody a egghead, but difficult to write something like ProcessExplorer.
Some people always complain...

They all work great and do what they promise. Always have. Just keeps getting better with time. I use them all the time and they've saved my butt on dozens of troubleshooting calls.

the collection of the utilities are handy for the technincally inclined.
however, the egghead needs to create a control panel so the tools can be initiated from a single interface that is user friendly and helpful.
speaking of helpful - the help files should all be single format. if i'm not mistaken microsoft has canned chm formats and i could not readily find any help from the website or one of the downloaded files.
fyi- the chm files included can be right click upon and via properties click on the "allow" button.

Nice to see it in one package, and I'm glad they are not including garbage like the BSOD screensaver (I'm surprised that after buying Sysinternals Microsoft hasn't wiped that little "tool" from existance seeing as it basically pokes fun at them).

Wish there was a combo installer for all of these.
