Not sure why yet cannot get this latest 6 version to work properly.
I could be overlooking something yet have experience using earlier versions in the 4 and 5 series that worked well tagging WAV files.

I like TagScanner. It does what I want and is easy to use. They only problem I have with it is after 6.0.0 is that it has gone with an ugly Win10 look.

Tagscanner is perfect for tagging those songs before placing them on the radio server. However I have found that the latest versions will not allow for a save after the info have been entered. On a hunch I installed an older version and it works perfectly. I'm not sure what happened between the versions. but the older version works and the newest version sux!

TagScanner is one of those really good pieces of software that doesn't get a lot of mention as it should. I use the portable version for tagging my FLAC files and some of my movies. It works pretty fast and I've never had any issues since I started using this, so it's definitely something I would recommend for enthusiasts like me, that wish to add a bit of structure to their media collection, without the need to use anything overly complicated. Great program!

Great tag reader/editor/renamer and listmaker.
Initially confusing: If you add a file or folder under tag editor, it will replace any prior entries with the newest. To accumulate entries, use the Listmaker tab and then open the tag editor tab.
Also, under listmaker, you will find the save playlist icon after looking; the line at the bottom of the box will tell you what each icon does. And, to retain a line, like artist, click the box next to the line.
I tried mp3tag and couldn't figure out how to use it. This one is the best, despite idiosyncracies.

This is a fantastically useful bit of kit. I got to this after trying and failing with several other progs. As a DJ I get sent lots of music from different sources. As well as in disparate formats, the music industry cant write an ID3 tag to save its life.
The DJ software I use reads TAGS not FILENAMES. At 1st I was UNABLE to play the tunes I had been sent, as I could not locate them, not a good thing! Previous to using tagscanner, I would have to click on each DL'd files properties and manually rewrite the tag. On a good day I get 50 tunes including several remixes. I can put the lot into TS in one go, clearly see the file name, and correct or write the tag. I dont have to write the same thing out lots of times if I highlite several in tag editor. I can then RENAME the file from the corrected tag entry, all from within the interface. Over the past few months I have edited my whole library of several hundred thousand tracks, including many ripped from vinyl and CD, which I ripped BEFORE I realised the importance of correct tagging. Even if you dont DJ with digital files this prog is good for sorting out your mp3 (+) libray. My personal opinion is that anyone dissing tagscanner either cant figure out how it works or works for a rival developer. Sergey Serkov should be applauded for his creation and donate what you can please, if not developers of useful free-ware will have to sell their products.
All in all I cant praise this enough, alongside MP3GAIN and MEDIACODER it provides the mainstay of my arsenal of music file "levellors"

I am truly impressed by Tagscanner, no bulls**, no ads, just a great program. It has always helped me greatly. Only with the new release, I really cannot use it, if I try to change the tags for artist, album etc, I get red exclammation marks, and since I am not that much of a computerjargon geek, I am having a really hard time. Does anyone know how I can get this problem to disappear (in normal English?), or does anyone have the tagscanner 4? I could really use the help. I love the program, and I hate the fact that I can't use it.
Thnx

Hi,
Thanks a lot of TagScanner, it rocks: http://www.xdlab.ru/en/
Was wondering though if you could please make the TAG Processor Preview window respect the selected columns like all the other layouts.
It's the only one that just shows all the columns and ignores what columns you have enabled or disabled.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that does not use every column of data when using the TAG Processor so why show a ton of empty columns every time.
Or perhaps just do that. If the column is empty then don't display it, as it's just useless taking up space.
Thanks a lot,
Will

I assume you are referring to me by "DB", anomoly. I don't understand why, and I don't care. Keep up the ad-hominem nonsense, though, and find out how long it takes to get your account closed.
There is nothing wrong with my previous review. Disliking an interface and ease-of-use is a perfectly valid reason for forming an opinion. Like catchpole, you'll just have to deal with it.
And yes, I did try TagScanner.
P.S. anomoly, try switching to decaf.
P.P.S. Take that show on the road, catchpole. Hilarious stuff, poorboy. Don't worry; some day you'll get a job and you won't have to rate purely on cost. :)
anomoly reviewed v5.1.559 on Mar 17, 2010
If DB says it's too difficult for him to use then this is obviously a terrible program.
Great review moron.
From now on a****** your nickname is DB. Get used to it.
This does not handle many of the extended tags that mp3tag does such as replaygain, but on the other hand, TS reads a folder of flac files I have fine and the latest version of mp3tag said the files had NO tags.
Mp3 tag will work portably but then must write directly to your apdata folder. So it really is NOT portable like this, which does NOT need the apdata folder access (that it doesn't write to).
Reverb reviewed v5.1.559 on Mar 17, 2010
As a longtime user of MP3Tag I decided to see what all the fuss is about. I was pleasantly surprised. I am not a big fan of skins either but the default one was easy to use. Has pretty much the same functions as MP3Tag (Album art, playlists, copy tag to/from filename, export to htm/csv, is portable etc.). It's a matter of preference (which GUI you are more comfortable with). Both are highly recommended for managing ID TAG info for your media files.
Blaxima reviewed v5.1.558 on Mar 11, 2010
It is only checking for updates at start up which like in most programs can be turned off in the options.
I've tried many tagging programs (including the inferior mp3tag) and I find this simple and great for batch renaming of tags and file names.
I could do without the skin but it's not distractingly ugly like some
dhry reviewed v5.1.552 on Oct 6, 2009
Absolutely brilliant program. I'm not a big fan of skins but at least they've done it so it doesn't impact the responsiveness of the program (unlike, for example, FarceStone Image Viewer). Program isn't -instantly- understandable, at least it wasn't for me, but it's only a ten minute learning curve. Whatever. Five stars and kudos for being free.
Balderstrom reviewed v5.1.551 on Aug 29, 2009
I find it quite odd this program makes a constant HTTP connection to fe20-1.hc.ru. Likely for checking for new version - but after it checks, the connection should be closed... not remain until you are forced to kill it with NirSoft's CurrPorts.
anomoly reviewed v5.1.551 on Aug 27, 2009
Without having someone else tag your stuff the way you want, it doesn't get any easier. As well, there's a zip version and neither has paypal options like mp3tag's only installer which btw is an awful gui but does have some nice features alas. Bugs may come & go but this prog is indispensible.
Balderstrom reviewed v5.1.550 on Aug 17, 2009
+/- Lack of menu's is odd at first, but definitely a cool "feel" to the program.
+ It Actually does what it claims.
+ It Supports Win2K, unlike other unmentionables that purposely broke Win2K support.
+ Fairly intuitive interface.
+/- Uses its own theme Consistently, so perfectly legible. (Ignores System Colours)
+/- Lack of ToolTips, but displays info in the StatusBar.
Missing: Ability to sort File Lists by multiple fields,
ie, Click on Album, and it is secondarily sorted (automatically) by Track#.
ie, Click on Artist, now it is secondarily sorted (automatically) by Title.
I'd much rather be able to shift click on successive fields, to choose the sorting method, and be able to save the sort method as a "Sort Preference", which would enable you to set up a handful of different sorting methods, and quickly change between them.
No option to enable menu's, nor any keyboard shortcuts therein, is a negative in my books. Thus the way the File List is displayed, the only field that can be renamed from there is the Filename, and only with F2. Double-clicking when the mouse is on a given field causes the song to play, instead of editing the item.
Though I think if it at least had multifield sort, the lack of Menu's & keyboard shortcuts could be overlooked, and would easily bump this up to 4.5 - 5.

So I have been using TagScanner 5.525 for about a month now. And I am alternating between loving and hating it. I have been looking for a Tagging program to replace MusicMatch (now dead but you can find it on BT). TagScanner comes the closest. It exceeds it is some areas and is only slightly deficient in others. My biggest problem with the program is the random bugs. For example, I am trying to delete comments from many tracks (eg Ripped by Winamp) and deletes track number as well. I would up the rating if were not for the random bugs.

With mp3tag I have to reapply mp3ext over as it messes up the icon. Only with tagscanner does mp3ext show bitrate icons. Extremely powerful Tag editing program. You can edit any tag with this.
Tips:
When saving make sure the top right drop down says 'complete' so it overwrites all tags. Otherwise some changes may not stick.
You can make batch changes by easily selecting a category such as 'Artist'. Press the category name so it turns light blue. Select multiple mp3 files by holding down the shift key and any changes made in that category will be saved to all selected files when you press save. Leaving it blank clears the category for all files.
Spend some time and explorer this program's powerful features. Definitely not for the Novice!

I used to use this program quite a bit. I found its editing function to be quirky. For example, I would manually make tag edits that it wouldn't save. I used to love it for batch changes but I've since switched to mp3tag as it did everything this did and has a much simpler interface. Nonstandard, fancy looking UI's have run their course with me. It just makes a simple application that much harder to use.
DLX reviewed v4.9 Build 495a Beta on Mar 13, 2005
Very nice. UI could be somewhat better (for example, moving between folders could be in treeview, choosing rename format would be much simpler if instead %1 - %2 youn could enter %artist - %title).
For playing songs... how about volume controls??! There is none atm. Also, support for requesting album data (and renaming accordingly) from freedb would be very nice.
For some reason, after renaming one album and moving on to the next, TagScanner started adding the song number from previous album, ie instead of 01-17 it did 17-33.
Overall, nice but much room for improving.

Been using this for a couple of years now since v4.5 & it's absolutely bang-on for batch file tagging & renaming. I've stopped counting the amount of tagging software I’ve gone through & none to date can touch this little beaut’. The options for file renaming plus id3v1 & id3v2 manipulation is truly awesome, and to top it off the list generator is pretty damn tasty too. Definitely gets a big-bad HI FIVE from me.

Darkpepe if your going to say something is better than at least give a reason. Or you just sound like an a** hole!!

I've always loved this program but with the latest betas some songs just refuse to be anything but "no artist-no title" no matter what I do. I change them in the tag editor or with other programs and it just flat refuses to read or write tags. I uninstalled and went back to 4.8 just to double-check and it worked fine. This is happening with old mp3s and newly ripped ones, seemingly at random so I don't know what's tripping it up. Back to 4.8 for me.

MP3Tag is much better.

This thing rocks so much! Easy to use, and does exactly what it says it does! Scans mp3s for tags, and allows you to rename files according to whatever criteria you designate. Also allows you to change ID tags easily.

He fixed the delimiter problem I was having in the latest build. I'm happy now. :)

This is by far the best program out there and I love it. There is only one problem that I have run into. When I try to do a batch TAG and set my delimiter as ' - ' (ignore the 's), it will not work. Some songs I have are groups who have a '-' in their name, so I need to set the delimiter so it does it by ' - '. Any ideas?

BEST! I use this great and free tool in combination with some file-renaming tools to keep my huge MP3-Collection in order! Stable, quick, easy to use und full with features, combined with a cool author... What else could you want! This is a must-have, give it a try!

A very good program for tagging your MP3's. It is very stable und functional. You have a large option to edit your tags. And the best it's free. It's even better than some shareware programs !!

This is such a must-have. I have used this program before in it's earlier stages and this update is great because it includes support for v2+ tags at last. Now I can fix all those MP3 tags that are messed up on my Neo!
b-wolf reviewed v4.5 Beta Build 452 on Jan 24, 2002
Works perfectly, very easy to use, now has preview modes for both from file and from tag, supports ID3 Tag version 1.0 / 1.1 / 2.3 / 2.4. Simply excellent. Great Job Sergey!

awesome program that really helped out after i used some other g** mass renamer and it changed a lot of my mp3 singles to like 428.mp3 and all in numrical order, one run though tagscanner and it changed like 2000 files back to good file names, well... most of them ;) there are a few with no mp3 tag, but hey, it did exactly what it was suposed to, and damn well

Sweet. The best I've used up to now was an Ad-ware program that did a bit more, but wasn't nearly as simple as this little beauty. The only deficiency that I see is that it offers a very cool preview option in MP3 renaming from tags, but doesn't offer the same preview in the tag generation from filename. Not a very big deal, but consistency would be nice. Also, the same gripe I have with pretty much every other MP3 tag editor / auto-renamer goes for this one... Why does NO ONE seem to support ID3v2 tags? WinAmp uses ID3v2 for the visual display, and if an MP3 already has a screwed-up ID3v2 tag, writing a correct ID3v1 tag doesn't fix that displayed information at all. If the program did these two things, I'd up my rating to a 5.
