If I wanted to buy a software for remote desktop connection it would definitely not be RealVNC.

Cyberia: what is unacceptable are reviews by people who have no clue about what they talk about. VNC is a remote administration software. Of course it is reported as such by your anti-spyware software! If you didn't install this application yourself, and your anti-spyware reported it, of course you'd want to remove it. But if you downloa it because you know what it does and it meets your requirements, why would you bash it because some software identifies it correctly as what is exactly is, and since you downloaded it, what you downloaded it for!
I give this one a 4 only because I prefer UltraVNC much better.

Well, I finally got "HACKED"! I had been using this Application for [2] years to help people [Seniors] remotely. Constantly [Daily] changing the Password in the app., and I got "HACKED"!!! Getting ready to "Harden" the system. Meanwhile, user beware it could happen to you too.
I updated the Application and got the updated Security features. Now it runs better, and safer than ever. I love this Program!!!

Hi, I use VNC all the time at work and home. It is an excellent package - really useful for administering PCs remotely, where often remote desktop will not work.

It's hassle-free for work environments as it is free for commercial use. In addition the connection can be made as secure as you like by tunneling the connection through a ssh session - covered simply here.

Overall an excellent product - and it's free too!!

What gives me a laugh, in light of this, is the thought of how many idiots rate it highly, and use VNC over the internet.

Oh, gee, how awful of me. After all, VNC is freeware. And isn't it against the unwritten law to criticize freeware, even if it's valid criticism?

I know, I know, you're going to tell me that VNC is indeed insecure crap, but that it's still useful on local networks, or VPN. But I find it so painfully slow and terribly performing that it's not useful even under those circumstances.

I'm not seeing it. 4.1 is free, 4.1.4 has a free trial, but costs $$. I went to http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi.

Either way, VNC is excellent and appreciated freeware.

"totally unencrypted and insecure" ummm... actually, that's untrue. If you read the docs you'll see that the authentication process is encrypted, it's just the graphical data stream after which is unencrypted.

And if you want the entire data stream to be encrypted then you go with one of the other variants of VNC such as Ultr@VNC which has a free plugin that provides 40 and 128 bit RC4 encryption.

Yep, just tell them to install this program, get the IP, set a password, and you are working on their computer in real time--and also totally unencrypted and insecure. Oh, of course you can use OpenSSH. That's a real hoot to get the user to set up.

Great program. Ive been using it for years.

Its works best when you have to help someone with their computer when you cant be physically in front of it. Some times its just too hard to describe to someone what to do on a computer. Just tell them to install this program, get the IP, set a password, and you are working on their computer in real time.
Best program for remote assistance and maintenance. Version 4 is a pretty big upgrade over version 3.

Except that RA is propriatary, commercial, and not cross-platform. VNC however has many "free" implementations, built-in Java viewers so you can remote in from anywhere with no more then a web browser and a password, and runs on everything from Palms to Big Iron (so yes, you can control your Winbox from your Palm if you want.) Finally rate programs by THEIR qualities, not "*" because you're a RA wh***. VNC for Windows IS an excellent application even though I prefer other VMCs.

I've been using VNC at work for some time to provide technical support. This is a great free product that would be better if a secure protocol were out. I haven't bothered to try using it with SSH since I'm using it internally over a LAN and not using it over the Internet.

Don't see much different....except a VERY nice increase in response speed of the screen transfer. This increase in performance alone was worth the update from RC9!

I've used WinVNC for a long time now and its great. Because its open source there are other implementations available, for those people with good machines and slow networks I gotta suggest "TightVNC" (search on google) works great.

What decoding options do you miss? ASniffer has almost the same decoding capabilities as Iris. It decodes TCP/IP sessions. But write to me (I'm author of this program) with suggestions and good chances you will find them in the next version.

One of the main reasons that I love VNC is you can use it under multi-platforms! PCanywhere doesn't really offer this, however VNC will let you use FreeBSD, Linux, Windows, just about anything... sure, it's slow, but what can you expect?

Awesome program although a bit slow, even for a LAN. I dont know about the other versions, but this one has a bug that crashes the client when another client connects.
The (file)size of the whole package is amazing.

A great program, but a bit slow. If there was an option to change the colors to grayscale or 16 that would be a bit faster. Otherwise, a good free alternative to pc anywhere.

Very stable, powerful, useful. Only gripe is that it's slooow, even over a LAN connection. RAdmin updates much quicker, but VNC has worked every time for me.

This program is definately worth getting. It's alittle slower than PCAnywhere(only tested on LAN so far) but not much, and best of all, as they stated, it's free. There's no going wrong here, and there are various other things making it worth your download.

man really slow to this one guys... go to the page this was released october of '99. it is however a really good remote admin program try it out.
