Publisher's Description

WavPack allows you to losslessly compress (and restore) both 16 and 24-bit audio files in the .WAV format. Unlike "lossy" compression schemes (like MP3) that discard information, WavPack converts the audio data into a more compact form so that the restored files are digitally identical to the original source. It's somewhat like the file compression portion of WinZIP except that because WinZIP is designed for other types of files, it works very poorly on audio data. Like other lossless compression schemes the data reduction varies with the source, but it is generally between 25% and 50% for typical popular music and somewhat better than that for classical music and other sources with greater dynamic range.

woo hoo, the best gets better.

I really wish it would get more support because it is clearly the best choice still for perfect compression

Love it.

My favourite lossless audio compressor.

FYI-- no go on Vista. Just a heads up, not a complaint-- as per Supported OS.

Underrated format. In my experience, it compresses faster and better than FLAC.

Jotti, VirusTotal, and Virus.org did not find anything in this file.

Wavpack is great and just gets better. Lossless is lossless for sound quality, but this is hard to beat for compression and for speed.

Finally a new release!! I just love the job Wavpack does. Compresses your audio with out any degregation (@midnighter_9999-because it's lossless) and does it in a blink of an eye.

I would suggest using it with EAC.

@yokozuna: I tried WavPackDrop with beta 3 today, it's exactly what i was looking for, i only miss an option to select "very high" preset.

@infectiphibian

Please, try WavPackDrop http://www.rarewares.org...ossless/wavpackdrop.zip You need to drop wavpack.exe to the folder and voila!

The 4.41 betas introduce some speed optimizations, so the best lossless compressor just got a touch faster.

And it still is the best for now, having outstripped FLAC over a year ago. TAK will likely replace it as my lossless codec of choice by the end of the year, however.

havent tried it out yet...but does it reduce the quality of the song along with the compression???....most of my music are 160kbps

The re-written x-modes provide faster encoding speed, and its overall excellence continues to outstrip FLAC.

If you archive mono material, such as audiobooks, be sure to use the new --optimize-mono switch.

For those looking for a front-end, I'd strongly recommend Speek's Multi-Frontend, which although no longer developed, still works flawlessly with WavPack and several other codecs:

This IS the best lossless codec. Better compression and speed than the more popular Flac and is compatiable with just as many devices

Its best used with EAC althougth there is a NERO version available at the main site if you have and would rather use that

it has impressive compression but is there some gui available for us n00bs?

When I tested the previous alpha, I didn't even realize the -x switch had been made so much faster. Not that it ever increased compression much, but in version 4.3x, it was too slow for me to even try on all but the shortest tracks.

But with the dramatic speed increase, I tried it, and it saved me 10 MB on my test album. That may not seem significant, but given the number of albums in my collection, it is.

The best just got even better.

WavPack came to my rescue when I needed to work with 32bit floats (and no other app at the time was able to).

I've always preferred WavPack to FLAC.

My choice for lossless, hybrid mode is very cool.
But, I have Alpha 3 here, Alpha 2 is not the newest.

JEdwardP

JEdwardP reviewed v4.4 Alpha 2 on Oct 19, 2006

The "Old High" mode now gives me slightly better compression than it did in version 4.3x, and certainly better compression than the "New High" mode does, although the "New High" mode is noticably faster.

But the "Old High" mode was always very fast anyway, so I'll use this version, but I'll be sticking with the "Old High" mode (-hh switch).

WavPack remains my lossless compressor of choice, with FLAC still ranking second to it.

Great application for lossless I prefer WavPack over Flac. I just wish MediaMonkey supported WavPack.

Love me some Wavpack. Development wise, the only real choice accross the board is FLAC or Wavpack. I prefer the later.

JEdwardP

JEdwardP reviewed v4.2 on Jul 24, 2005

For my music, at least, WavPack gives better compression than FLAC, and its Foobar plug-in gives much faster decode time than does Monkey's Audio.

I've converted all my lossless files from FLAC to WavPack, and think It'll be my preferred format for quite awhile.

Recommended audio compression utility. Combine with a PAR or ECC utilty for archiving on digital media.

the lossy mode is a really interesting alternative to psychoacoustic lossy compressors at high bitrates. lossless compression is very good, too.
