This is a nice program. It's elegant, and well done in every way. However, I just don't get the relevance or usefulness of Where Is It. Programs like Everything are free, ligntining fast, and do all the file finding and wrangling I could possibly want.

I have tested this software and it was much faster and has more options then advanced disk catalog for example. Where is it works fine for me under windows 7 x64 as well.
BUT! after intensive testing I decided to buy the software and support the author. The orderingprocess was a mess! Robert Galle (the coder of where is it) seems to be a sick paranoid. Let me explain. If you order a (cheaper) online license to have to use a emailadress like this "name@your-company.xxx". Freemailservices are not accepted! After my first try to order a online license for 39$ I got "blacklisted" because "my user details are invalid". Wow! You (and I did so too) have to input all your private data _even_ a phonenumber (but he himself does not offer one on his website / domaindetails) is required! (just to remember, here we talk about a software that is (mostly?) for private users and 40$ cheap!). Anyway. First try failed. Then second try. I ordered a CD-ROM (+6$) because if you choose this option you can use freemailadress (that I use for example for paypal too). Guess what happend...? YES! Again the order was rejected because of blacklisted userdata. (Tried to contact the author via mail, no answer! (maybe because he has blacklisted all freemailproviders!?)).
Mister Robert Galle, your software is a good one but the "service" you offer for ordering is maximum user unfriendly, paranoid and sick! So what to do now? Searching the web for a manipulated / pirated version? Maybe the author want this! GOOD SOFTWARE, BULLs*** SERVICE!

What F1Racer said.

I have been using WII? to catalog backup media dating back more than 12 years (nevermind that some of the CDs have become unreadable; at least I still know what I've lost) and the catalog files themselves are now over a gigabyte, spanning some 600 DVD. With that many media, WII? is the fastest way I can find, say, img9803120001.jgp or that old backup of Paintshop Pro 3 or where I have stored the best quality version of xxxx.mp3 and so on. I love the option to save previews of many file types with the catalog, but unfortunately between versions I found myself unable to find that option again (there are definitely too many options for some things you can do) and missed saving previews on several thousand jpgs. 5 stars for the program minus 1 for, well, clustering too many options.

gawd21: You don't know what you're talking about. It does install on Win7-64bit because I'm running it right here.
I've used this software for years.
So it can only do what the Windows Search does eh ? Ok ask your Windows Search to locate something you catalogued on a CD/DVD/External HDD 3 years ago. It can't !
This is for locating files that are on media that are stored away, not what is currently on your computer. jeez.

If you want to compare a program to the windows search the do that with Locate32. Even then Locate32 is far better because the results are instant, unlike windows search which has to scan every time.

I've been using WhereIsIt for many years now and its just invaluable.
If I want to find a file on an external HDD or DVD that might is stored away somewhere it tells me where it is and saves me the hassle of going through all my stuff which would be frustrating and take ages.

Pointless, over priced, crap! This wouldn't even install on W7 Pro 64bit. Not only does it not work correctly, but it is a waste of space as it does nothing more than what your built in search does.

@F1Racer

Wow. You are so sadly wrong! It does not work. I have tried on three installs of W7 Pro 64 bit. Also, it is still pointless. Most people would know that something is on a dvd/cd and not their HD. Sorry that you have to have a daily list of when to use the restroom. Sadly, this is still pointless and over priced for something that DOES NOT WORK!

@beer
that states the Author has humor :)

btw. took me some while to stop laughing. jorgosch has right. you did not understood the concept or at least misunderstood something here.

CD/Media is not a Catalog, a Catalog contains several CD/Media. so your 100's of CD's you can put in ONE ore Several Catalogs. depending if you want to organize it a little bit.

After using Advanced Disk Catalog (Elcomsoft) for many years, I am totally sold on WhereIsIt - it deals easily with a humongous collection of 500GB's, extracts interesting information on files and is reasonably fast. Simply the best!

(Regarding some comments further down: A catalog can contain many disks. Unicode is supported.)

beer

Great program but I've just found out that you can only autoload 99 disk catalogs, which is a shame because I have accumulated 100's of disks over the years and the autoload function allows quick searching without having to load individual catalogs.
When I enquired about this to the author I was told I should organize myself better. Bloomin' cheek!

The best cataloguing software I know, and regularly updated. There are so many plugins for this to catalogue almost anything imaginable, and I only use a fraction of its capabilities.

mike.rogers666

mike.rogers666 reviewed v3.83.405 on Apr 24, 2007

This may be the best cataloguing software available. The plugins are great, just a few crashes due to plugin bugs.
One more problem is that it cannot scan inside ISO, CCD, BIN, MDS file types (CD images) as it can already scan inside zip files. The advantage of ISO's is that you don't have to extract it to scan inside sub ISO's as in the case of archives. I wonder if anybody can write a plugin to scan inside these CD images?
The author would not include this becasue of daemon tools but imagine mounting 6 images per DVD to scan inside them.

dzjepp

dzjepp reviewed v3.83.405 on Apr 17, 2007

Does anyone know of a place where you can download custom catalogs? Because I want to try this with all the features but right now I don't have the time to learn how to build the catalogs. Can anyone share some of their catalogs?

Thanks!

It has been a year since I reviewed WhereIsIt? and I still believe this is one of the best apps I've ever encountered. Now, however, I have to, very reluctantly, modify my comments about the author's responsiveness. I reported a crash in WhereIsIt which was not the fault of WhereIsIt, but I did not know that. There was a problem with how one of the plugins responded to a file on a disk I was attempting to scan. Mr. Galle replied (very promptly!), with the tone of a strict teacher scolding a recalcitrant and very lazy and stupid student.

Fortunately I've only rarely felt the need to contact the author in the past so I won't miss that source of support very much.

I think having a user support forum for WhereIsIt? is an excellent idea. I know it has taken the load off the authors of several of my other favorite apps. They are active on the forums, but only NEED to respond to the issues they feel is worth their time. I'd suggest this to Mr. Galle directly, but I can't remember where I put my asbestos suit.

uberfly reviewed v3.81 Build 1226 on Dec 26, 2006

I agree totally with colinfer - I think the program is awesome, but after contacting the author with a repeatable bug to see if there was a work-around, I also got no response. After a second (friendly) try, the guy writes back is full a-hole mode like my silly bugs were waisting his time. The guy needs a support forum or similar so at least the user group surrounding his app can help each other.

I have used this program through a few versions without any problems. I then had a problem cataloguing a USB hard disc and contacted the author for assistance. The help was non-existant. First of all he did not reply, then instead of providing help, all he did was critisise my own efforts to find out where the problem lay. When the program works it is good. The support is diabolical.

patlange reviewed v3.71 Build 123 on Jan 23, 2006

WhereIsIt? has to be the most elegant, flexible and bug-free shareware application I have ever registered. I've used it for quite a few years now and find it to be indispensable.

Whether you want to keep track of the files on your hard drives, your collection of digital photographs or your vast CD & DVD collection, this application will fill the bill and more.

The author is very responsive, and in my experience, is great at guessing what the cause of your reported problem might be even when you haven't given him all the information a normal mortal might need.

hkm

hkm reviewed v3.67 Build 506 on May 7, 2005

Excellend cataloger. I use it all the time. I have a couple of gripes, my chief one being that it's a bit clunky when doing searches. I'd like to be able to do a search, double-click on a file to open [you have to change the default to do this is WhereIsIt], launch the prog, etc., etc. But then I'd like to go immediately back to WhereIsIt. Can't -- as far as I know. I have to close the search window, etc. etc. What I mean is to keep the search window open, but be able to minimize it. I know that when I switch back to WhereIsIt it'll auto-load the search, but I'd like it just to minimize.

A very fast indexer - if you have a lot of data like I do -- 160 gigs on one HD alone, it could take some time, esp if you're searching inside compressed files. But, still, well worth it.

Also, if you're on a slower computer that's packed with files, it's a good idea to delete your Internet cache first [or set up WhereIsIt to ignore your temp files areas].

Finally, when I want to pull some files out of my cache, I often use WhereIsIt to do the job. But here, I'd also like a bit more functionality, like once I've identified files in the cache I want to keep/move, I'd like the prog to either act as a file manager, or switch-link over to TotalCommander, etc.

The program is awkwardly good.

B U T - - it costs a lot of money. That's why I give it only 3 stars.

Do not forget poor people ! ! not everybody has the money for such a program. And don't tell me about the work it costs to program it. There are people in this world, who give you programs like Open Office for FREE . . .

B U T - - there is a program which is MUCH faster and as good as this one, with even more/other features, which is FREEWARE.

Try the FREE one: it's called KAT-CEDE, and you can download it here: http://www.rbsoft.de

The only flaw - - you must forget your world-ruling English, because the program is in German . . .

I'm in the same boat as some others, been using this prog for about 4 years, its excellent. tons of features, more then I'll ever use, my only complaint is that it can be a bit of a pain to find the features I do need at times, like print to file took me forever to figure out.
I only gave it 4 stars because I tried Advanced Disk Cataloque quite awhile back and found it nicer to use, more simple and to the point, the only reason I didnt switch was the fact that I didnt want to have to redo all my disks.

Re: hardgiant
I tried WII 3.5 vs. Supercat 4.3 -- SC is maybe 10-15% faster at searching (much faster at indexing, but then, it does take in a lot less information).

If you take into account that OTOH WII beats SC feature-wise at least on a magnitude of 4:1, the decision between both doesn't seem to be very complicated to make ...

This program is awesome. While a new ACDSee type application would be great I don't see why you should get rid of the browser/thumbnails, that is the main way I navigate though my photos. If you just want something to pop your pictures up on the screen try Microsoft Picture Viewer, it comes pre-installed.

Great program. More features that you can count. Does everything well. This is a bit off-topic, but Rob is wasting his talent on this program, which has a very narrow market. He needs to use his assembly language skills to develop other software needed by many. A few scarce apps I can think of is a fast graphics viewer like ACDSee Classic, but without the unneeded browser and thumbnails. A small, fast, but powerful Database IV compatible program. A lightweight, fast, and flexible inventory program. Come on Rob! Quit wasting your talent on a program with such a narrow market! :-)
