Winamp 5 has a crappy interface, and the old versions are full with system issues. I personally reinstalled my windows copy because of a Winamp 2 version.

Well, the program works as advertised hence the 5 rating, but is it needed? When the alternative is bigger than the original, and the original can be lightened further upon installation, the point of the alternative is......what?

Crap. Who needs and alternative to the alternative? There are plenty of shoutcast players out there. WinAmp does more than just shoutcast radio and tv and mp3 libraries. Oh yeah, it's still free. You don't need pro unless you can't handle using a separate util for burning cd's. Geez.

This product works as advertised, but I'm not sure its necessary. Most of the problems that you could find with Winamp are subjective. The most objective problem is that it's owned by AOL and doesn't employ the original team, and occasionally bundles songs and icons from AOL. But they are opt-out, and don't really weight the product down. Oh and the video suppose could be better (though you can opt-out of that too)

Besides, if you wanted a smaller footprint, just choose your install size, memory size. You can uninstall any plugins you don't like (never to be seen/loaded again). It doesn't steer you in any proprietary direction (hey, anyone who offers a free true mp3 encoder is asking for a lawsuit from Frauenhofer).

On the other hand, the Quicktime and Real alternatives are great (the Real Alternative is used in my organization with 0 complaints so far). Real Enterprise Desktop blue-screened a number of my machines before the switch to Real Alternative, and that makes for one unhappy IT admin. The quicktime alternative works but isn't quite as necessary as Quicktime is a more mature and user-friendly application.

What's not to like about Winamp? Plenty. The inconvenient, cutesy interface in general. The crappy media library. And for old versions like the one recommended below, the security vulnerabilities.

Does that pretty much sum it up enough for you?

Very good codec pack. Highly recommended if Winamp is not a player you regularly use like me.

flashhh

flashhh reviewed v1.04 Final on Sep 5, 2005

This is just a mini codecs pack which will only make your computer support Nullsoft Media without messing with Winamp. I think it should be awarded.
Still, winamp sucks for me.

mj132, could you please render shoutcast source in graphedit for me, using winamp? no? you can't? well, then if you have no clue - why rate it?

mj132

mj132 reviewed v1.04 Beta 2 on Aug 24, 2005

What's not to like about WinAmp? Version 2.95 still works fine, has a tiny footprint and works pretty much flawlessly.

The other "alternate" programs (QuickTime, Real Player) make sense because those programs are memory hogs and, in the case of Real, makes one vulnerable for adware/spyware. But WinAmp is as pure as the driven snow!

norxh reviewed v1.04 Beta 2 on Aug 24, 2005

This is great. I really like Winamp but it does not follow Microsoft application guidelines at all. Winamp and it's plugins all store settings and data within in the program directory. So it is not compatible with least privilege/multi user environments. The developers are aware of this and have no plans of fixing it. I use Foobar now and I only kept Winamp around for shoutcast streams which are just awesome.

DJPM

DJPM reviewed v1.04 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

This is how it works folks, and this is why Winamp Alt is important:
Winamp is a great media player. Sometimes people like me want to use another player that fits our needs more. I use foobar2000 now. But, I can't get shoutcast streams in foobar.

Until now... This is a great codec! I am so excited to be able to access some of my fav shoutcast streams again. Worked great for me.

flashhh

flashhh reviewed v1.04 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

The codec pack is not bad. Everyone who gives low rating - that's because they use Winamp. Well, there are people, who hate winamp! So this codec rocks (for me)!

anti00Zero

anti00Zero reviewed v1.04 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

not bad, if you want only a winamp alternative but if you want more codecs then take another codecpack and you don't need this here,

QQ

QQ reviewed v1.04 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

of course there is a point - Winamp is standalone app, this is a set of DShow filters to play winamp specific media files. And the possibilities are endless!

to all who rate this 1: ignorance is a bliss, eh? if you don't get the point, then it's you who are useless, not this pack.

bored154

bored154 reviewed v1.04 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

There is no need for a Winamp Alternative. If people are worried about the bundles Winamp now includes in the installer, just download the instllers that dont have the bundles. Heres a link to the Full Winamp without the bundles(on the main site):

http://download.nullsoft...ent/winamp5094_full.exe

Just remove the "_emusic-7plus" from the exe URL and you have an ad-free winamp.

But, like most (if not all) things, its always good to have an alternative to something.

JEdwardP reviewed v1.04 Beta on Aug 18, 2005

I might be missing something, but this seems pointless at best, and downright misleading.

For those of us who already use some player other than WinAmp, haven't we been using an alternative to WinAmp?

The best alternative to WinAmp is whatever player one happens to think is best, not a codec pack.

Why would anyone want this except to "experiment?" I'm happy with Winamp and agree with other reviewer that you can just install what options you want. And, if as "biggman15" says, that this uses RealPlayer, then I guess we'll all need to download the freeware "Real Player Alternative" as well...........

Sometimes I wonder what people mean when they talk of something being "bloated." WinAmp includes to option to install whichever items you do and don't want. There are no items installed into your start-up folder or the windows "run" folders.
It's just a media player.
In terms of system resources...how old of a machine are you running? I keep winamp running and I play new games all the time with no issues at all.
If you're just doing normal work, browsing, etc. I can't see anyone running more than a P3 having any issues at all. I run it on my P3 at work with 5-10 windows open including photoshop with no issues.

This "alternative" works, but I don't really see much need for it. Winamp is a small program that's easy to only use for 1 or 2 file types...might as well just DL it and use it in it's most stripped down form.

BNuser reviewed v1.03 Beta 1 on Jul 25, 2005

Works perfect and since I ever wanted Media Player Classic to connect to my Shoutcaststream all I can say is: thank you.

EDIT: Understand this, it adds the capability of playing back shoutcast streams to your SYSTEM, regardless of the player you use.

(And the people rating it low because of this isn't Winamp should go buy a new brain at Walmart. Sell your old brain on Ebay with "unused" tag. Should bring more money then and simply is the truth.)

EDIT: Oh, people like fools. They only hate self-appointed teachers.

Re: wingo.

Winamp is not bloated, even the version 5. You may be right though about Winamp3.

foobar may be leaner, bu then again it doesn't have a media library and don't play videos.

Winamp is the only audio/video player out there that are fully featured, easy on resources and are not bloated unlike certain competitors (coughcoughiTunescoughcoughWMPcoughcough).

And I don't really see what this program will offer that Winamp doesn't.

RE: "non-bloated" & "not memory consuming"

well its sounds like you know what you're talking about but you obviously don't.

winamp is bloated. period. everything released after v1.83 or if it was v2.5 can't really remember.

i also give it low rating because they stole 10USD they didn't answer any of my emails either. :(

i use an mp3 player to listen to music, foobar2000 is a strange name but good program.

Tokar

Tokar reviewed v1.02 on Jul 12, 2005

Dont need an alternative to a non-bloated freeware program.

Um, the developer needs to get some real hosting...the page isnt doing very well over at GEOCITIES. Half the website isnt available!

In the site, in the "In Future" category there's this note : " If someone creates NSV DirectShow Filter, we will add it". So keep it going!
I can't stand Winamp, so this Codec is GREAT for me!
PS: I saw there's a new version - 1.02!

QQ

lol so.. I truly dont understand why anyone would want to make this.... it works.. in its own.. quicky.. not really any point to it at all kind of way.. so..

3 for effort.. even tho it seems like a waste.. winamp already comes in a pretty slim version and its installer does let you choose.. the fact that its now owned by AOL isnt really a good reason to make an "alternative" unlike quicktime and realplayer in particular that just invades and takes what tehy want as well as installing junk you have no need for.. but this.. is just pointless.. so

ModderXManiac

ModderXManiac reviewed v1.01 on Jun 24, 2005

The K-lite Mega Codec Pack already installs playback for Winamp streams, along with media player classic.

I give this a 4 for the knowledge that they are developing alternatives. Meanwhile I'll wait for the new codec pack since there's a new version of ffdshow, real, quicktime, and winamp alternative; which will all be in v 1.34(or whatever build name they give it) of the mega codec pack.
Not to mention a new version of BSplayer Pro.

This really aint worth the download just wait for the new codec pack.
