The best music player created for the man. XD Easy to use, very soft and with thousands of skin to custom your winamp as you like.

Great program that resist the years very good.

Winamp is my only music player ever since i found it on the web. I have a lot of music on my computer and since it is very simple to use and very fast loading, it has become my only player.

Winamp2 is easly the best standalone music player. Keep up the good work Nullsoft! Please try to preserve the wonderful features of Winamp2 in your next major revision of Winamp. I was upset to find out, for example, that Winamp3 doesn't handle taskbar/notification the same way.

Or just skip up to 4.0 and continue, forgetting Winamp3 ever happened...

Excellent! :) But what will happend to us 2.x-lovers after WinAmp v2.99? v2.100 perhaps? :) hehe... I will stick to the 2.x-series since i think that 3.x is far too much that a musicplayer: it takes too much CPU, and has a lot of overkill-l33t-gam3r features... I don't want that kind of flexible skin, alpha-blending, scalable windows, etc. I want a media-player, and only 1 out of 10 of my friends has changed to WinAmp 3, and he's about to go back to WinAmp 2... :) Keep up the work on WinAmp 2. We're worth it ;D

The only reason I am giving this program a 3 is because I dont see any major improvements. Like someone already said, this one was meant to have a brand new skin. Or did they just change that shade of gray? Stick with Winamp 2.8x if you can.

Excellent program, great audio, great video, what more do you want? :)

As for the new skin, it is now in 32bit colour, rather than in 256 colours before, the fonts colours have been brightened to make them a little bit easier to read, the buttons are a bit more friendly looking than before and the colour of the font on the playlist is different. There are more changes which I forgot, it is all on a thread on the winamp forums.

Winamp 2.90 is a really good version of Winamp. It does contain most of the valuable function from WINAMP3. However, the video placyback makes me disappointed. I can only open the video file in English filename. The video files that in Chinese, Korean, Japanese filename cannot be open and play by Winamp 2.90. I hope Nullsoft can solve this problem. Because Winamp is an international famous media player.

Winamp3 is still crap and Winamp 2.x still rules.. this 2.9 with library just rocks.. I set the limit of the radios to 5000 and got over 3000 stations.. theres bound to be something for anyone in there.. the library is fast to use even with thousands of songs and .. just rules..the only thing I perhaps miss is the abillity to drag and rearrange the order of the columns.. it loads faster than 2.81 did as well.. now i just need a wsz template for the tv/lib skins so i can modify some oldie skins to this new KINGDOMNESS.... 5/5 isnt high enuff.. I vote for a 10/10 rating!

Bloated? Compared to what, Winamp 3? Take the new components out (and you can sice they're plugins) and this new release is actually smaller than 2.81 (look at the release notes: "Removed all ATL code, shoved EXE size by 20kb"). Even w/o the major new stuff, there's still a lot of little refinements and improvements to the old components, while decreasing their overall size.

Winamp 2.9 is geting closer and closer to my idea of the perfict media player. Internet TV is a gret thing in this version and I will be seting up a brodcast as soon as I am able to.

Recomended additions:
1) DVD playback would only be another pluse. Obviously it cant have it's own mpeg2 decoders (those arnt free) so it would need to be a front end player and thats fine with me. While there at it VCD and S-VCD playing wouldent hurt to. infact any CD video formats.

2) Use of TV tuner cards for watching TV and playing video game consoles on your PC. this would have to use the SAME video window as the video player window. It should also be able to record video but again thats probly not likley as encoders arnt free either.

3) visulivations should share the video window as well to show visulivations when your listining to music rather then watching a video. I personaly dock the video wondow and fource it to keep it's size (not resize with the video) and dock the window to the right of the main player and EQ and then dock the library below that.

4) The ability to show the whole interface filling the desktop (for use as a on screen desplay on a media player PC. totaly removing any visual refrence that your running windows.

then you have my perfict player. Right now I use winDVD Recorder for TV and DVD/windows media player for video files/ and winamp for audio. With this new version of winamp i'm able to iliminate media player and just use WinDVD and Winamp. I would like to narow that down to a single program.

Easy for beginners, can be advanced for more advanced p2p users. FileShare is the way to go if you are looking for just about anything. I'm tired of other file sharing programs (no name) they are full of hackers and lamers. FileShare is more secure and is updated daily. Some big hubs are being created and FileShare is definetely the future of p2p File Sharing. Not only is FileShare for users who want movies and programs it is a place where you can get assistance for your computer if you need help, it's a place where you can play trivia. All around p2p filesharing program. I recommend you get fileshare today!

I'm used to this simple and excellent mp3 player, I love using it and I am going to keep on using it untill I see something better. Winamp3 on the other hand is still a new program and its not that good. The only program that can be compared to Winamp 2.81 is Quintessential player 3.4, but I stll like Winamp 2.81 more. Let's get one thing straight now - WinAmp cannot be compared to all-in-one players, encoders, rippers and recorders like MusicMatch Jukebox 7.2. It is simplly a player and that is all there is to it. Windows Media Player 9.0 is going to support mp3 encoding, so I can't wait untill the final release. I don't like WMA encoding.
I don't like AOL, even though they own WinAmp.

I have always loved winamp, and still use it to this day. I always encourage and maintain a common view that people should always update their software as much as possible, and thats why I use sites like catchup.com. However, I should note that I'm still looking for a reason why I have seen 3 updates to winamp very recently (3.80, 3.80a, and 3.80a Updated). Listen guys, I like the program and I won't disrespect the work, but someone has got to tell Nullsoft to just make it stable before they release it (3.80->3.80a is not adding features it's fixing mistakes). That is why I'm giving it a 4 and if one more update comes out that fixes mistakes, I'll give it a 3 (not like it matters). You should all admit though that Nullsoft needs to get the ball rolling and start releasing the program once tested, not just as often as they do now and the very next day come out with a fix for their mistakes.

The file worked for me yesterday, it worked today to when i downloaded it, maybe its something with your computer, and if you read the previous posts, you would see that winamp.com is usually not updated for a good 3-4 days after an update is posted. Read the post below posted by TheTester. Anyways, Winamp continues to remain the best mp3 product I have ever used. I love its plugin capabilities and this is just another update which I am happy to install. Also, for you hardcore winampers, I would totally recommend the plugin at www.nicemcmedia.com It allows you to play mpeg, avi, and anything windows media player can handle. This plugin ROCKS! jcrewleif, as a reviewer you are totally ignorant. The fact that new versions of Winamp are released this often means that the developers are constantly trying to make a great program better. Nobody is forcing you to download updates. I've been using Winamp since v1.15 (somewhere around there) and it has always done its job, play mp3's, since day one. With the exception of only a couple updates, most of them were to add additional functionality, not to fix programming mistakes. Keep up the good work Nullsoft!

Just to clarify, Winamp.com gets update about once a week, so the releases are often available for download before advertised on their site. Also, for the last release, they had some network problems when the initial announcement was made on BetaNews, but was fixed when it appeared on their own web site.

The program is most excellent, as always. An old codebase and it still beats other players out there!

I am a bit baffled on BetaNews's reviews though. They said there was a 2.8 about 3 days before 2.8 was released (last week) and the download links were bad. Now they claim this is 2.80a, yet winamp.com makes no statement of a revision to the 2.8 version of last week.. What's up, BetaNews?

I have switched back to 2.79 until someone can help me or a new version comes out. I am using Windows XP home if anyone can suggest a fix let me know thanks.

It's no secret what a great program Winamp is. However, it is curious that the old 2x version is still being modified - the Netscape business logic having an influence I guess. Is there a release date for Winamp 3 Final yet?
Oh, and whoever manages the nullsoft.com site - the red on black is almost impossible to read!

There is *no reason* that this program doesn't deserve a 5 Star rating. You find me a media player that's as lightweight and efficient that supports a better plugin system and I'll bow to it.

By far, the best player for Windows. Although not much in terms of improvement from version 2.65, it is excellent. Sure, things may have been fixed here and there, but if I dind't know what version I installed I wouldn't be able to tell the difference from this version and the previous versions of Winamp. Winamp is also easy on the resources, especially when compared to Windows Media Player.

Winamp 2.80.
Excellent program, the loading time is even better then in previous versions. In addition, it shows that there still is support for 2.xx winamp even though 3.0 is out which again is still in beta3 and though it's digital and better sounding than 2.xx still is a bit buggy and takes awhile to load.
To sum it up winamp is the best mp3 player I've used, it's very low on resources too.

Linux version? Nice try (at trying to sound geek-cool), but the Linux version is an alpha (I believe) of v3.0 and, as such, is totally unrelated to the 2.x series.

Absolutly the best media player for Windows! A must have!!! OK, some minuses?? Well, Linux-version is not as good as Windows version. But it's still great!

Hey, thx the information on the new plug-ins, i'm trying them out now, and the reason why i haven't reported anything at the Winamp forums, is because they are simply TOO BIG, and it hasn't worked for me before when i asked a question. I wasn't b****ing, i was simply stating problems that still exist in the latest versions of Winamp, that haven't been address yet, a warning to some people if you wish, this will be my last post about this :), i think someone should delete a few of my posts if they don't mind.

If you look on the Sonique site and read the forums, it looks as if Lycos has funded a new small team to take over where the original Sonique 2 project left off. Alpha expected in February.

That said, I prefer Winamp to Sonique. Sonique may be prettier, but there are FAR more plugins available for Winamp, and it sounds better (at least on my machine).

a_fire_inside

a_fire_inside reviewed v2.78c Updated on Jan 8, 2002

Umm nelson sorry to break it to you, but Sonique is dead. Has been for a while. Shortly after their new webdesign the project was ended. Besides, Winamp owns all.

I like winamp a lot however, Sonique www.sonique.com is a great player too.. they are both going to release new version of there software winamp 3.x, sonique 2.x should be interesting.. both have skin support and are pretty fast.. sonique steals a little more memory..

Don't know if 2.78 is really revolutionary but winamp still whips the llamas a** as it states. Too bad there's an aol icon, but it's an easy checkbox on install and they gotta make money somehow... I'm a bit wary of the future of aol's intentions with winamp though.
Other than that minor inconvenience, winamp 2.xx series is solid and you gotta love the video plugins to make winamp my defaut multimedia player. (Anyone know how to uninstall WMP?)

Still the absolute best - small, speedy, loaded with features, fully customizable with and endless stream of skins for fashion & plug-ins for function. Though version 2.77 is a minor update it's still just another improvement and worth the download.

As Nullsoft is going incremental release steps, there is little to report as new features against 2.76. However Winamp remains the best Player for music files. With the number of plug-ins available, it can be used for nearly any type of music file. It comparatively low CPU loads and setup options for var. cpu types (like support for MMX, 3DNow) make it great on most systems. I run it under Win 98, NT and 2000. It worked fine on all platforms and did not create problems till date. With the disk writer plugin its great for converting files like mp3 to wav in order to create audio CD´s. Very recommended.

This program just keeps getting better and better. The ONLY thing I wish it had was the ability to adjust the desktop space when it docks, like the windows task bar. It would be great if i could keep Winamp in its rolled up state on the top of my screen and still be able to utilize the title bars of the other applications I am using. Here is a screen shot of what I mean: http://nwoonline.hispeed.com/xfer/WAshot.jpg

Just thought I'd point out that with this version, if you have Napster going, and start playing a song that is partially completed, it will stop at the point of progress that it was at when the song started playing. This is new from 2.71
