The only change in SP1a is that it does not include Microsoft's Java. If you already have SP1 installed you should not use this. It's only intended for new non-SP1 installations and only if you do not want MS Java. There are no other changes or fixes.

Do not install SP1a if you already have SP1 installed!!
the only difference is that SP1 does not include Microsoft VM

yes, SP1 is better, but Microsoft had to compile to Sun Java law suite.
if you have SP1 full install keep it, cause its better

Anything attached to the name Microsoft will ultimatly get bashed even if it is a useful piece of software or a patch. Completed the download and install without problems.

ModemMan, what do you mean that you have to make sure those two dll's are registered? My installation of SP1 just canceles, and I can't run msoobe.exe. I tried to unregister and then re-register the two dll's in quiestion, but it didn't help.

Does anyone know if this makes a VLE copy a retail copy? I have read reports that it does this. I am using a real MSDN VLE copy from work on my work laptop and want to know if i can install this version? I want to make a slipstream and then reinstall however i heard reports a few weeks back that it will turn a VLE copy into a retail copy. Can anyone tell me what will happen?

Update went like a breeze on my Dell P3 733. Make sure when you use the meathod at the link below that if you have unregistered your regwizc.dll and licdll.dll files, you must reregister them in windows xp before installing SP1, otherwise it will autocancel itself out before you get a chance to install it. So far no glitches and no noticeable differences. Will investigate more tomorrow.

As for as Windows XP SP1 install. it went great. Those of you that are complaining about not being able to install win XP SP1 due to a CD-Key and it will stop working ect. Well if you are smart there is a work around. There is a program out there that generated WinXP cd key- It was posted here (betanews.com) awhile back. It does work. All you have to do is reinstall using a new cd key. It works from there on out. For those of you looking for the program. (the keygen) I will send it those who want it (join Dal-net #iso-gamez) If I am in there I will send it to you.

I like it. Nothing visually new, but its what I do not see is what I like. My system is a little jumpier, and it starts and shutdowns a bit faster. I also see something new when I download files using IE.

Hmmm. So the logic is that if you can't pay (or won't pay) for a license then it's okay to steal the product. So, if I need a car and can't/won't pay for it can I steal yours? You couldn't possible mind since we're both using the same logic. Right?

LOL. Okay for those who have no clue how to use their eyes and read. The reason why Windowsupdate.microsoft.com won't work if you move your clock ahead one year is simple. If you would look at the Link when you click on Windows Update you will notice it says v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com instead of v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com. If you search for the Windows Update v5 you will see several links to microsoft and 3rd party pages saying that (guestimate) in 220 days the new version of Windows Update will be launched.

adaminferior: try putting your clock forward a year - windows update will stop working. Iv tried it. Clock set to current time, there is currently one update for windows and one driver update for my computer. Put the clock forward a year there are 0 driver updates, and the windows option is grayed out! (I didnt try this before installing SP1 so I assume this is a "feature" of SP1). - and this was WITH a "recovered" key :) (delete the review by me below mods not this one!)

It took 3 attempts to get the final install. Seems to be dragging the system, tho I couldn't have more speed 2gb RDRAM, P4 2.53mhz... All I've noticed is that the updates that won't install from M$ Update are included. Big whoop.

I could not install it because of my Xp language (French, here in Belgium) that's why I give the actual mean rate; but I'd like to know if (if you tested it already) the Mount Rainier support for CD-RW is in fact present in this SP1 ? Thank you for your possible responses. Patrick ;-))

I just did a clean install (I needed to already, just wanted to wait for a better reason than 30+ seconds for shutdown time - and yes, I tried all the tweaks). Anyways, I slipstreamed SP1 and made a bootable CD, and installed fresh that way ... Overall system response feels snappier. I don't think there's anything earth-shattering, however :) So it gets a 4, instead of 5.

Its a Service Pack.. it does what its supposed to do, now lets move on to patches for SP2. btw, it didn't muck up any of my pc's.

This is NOT an Official Release Persay.. it is an OFFICIAL FILE, but there is no OFFICAL Documentation yet. THIS WILL BE ON CD when microsoft publishes all the SP1 web pages and documentation, and finally, there will be a SMALLER download, that scans your pc for previously installed SP1 Hotfixes, and just applies what you're missing, thats called the "WEB Install" what this is is called "ADMIN" install, this is the entire SP1 the Web download, is what you're missing.

Interesting. I'm using the home edition on a Dell and everything went off without a hitch. I don't see any difference in how my machine runs; just the laughable new options in Control Panel - why bother? I already set Opera, etc. as defaults and trashed the MS icons the day I installed XP. Messenger CAN be deleted anyway - it's jusst a three step process and it's gone for good. Norton's stuff is working as it always has and I haven't seen anything else affected either. The hotfixes are finally gone from the "remove programs" menu. All in all, a surprisingly smooth experience. I can't for the life of me figure out what happened to everyone else because I've never had a problem from day one with anything XP related other than minor incompatibility issues and SP1 continues the tradition. It feels so strange saying this about a MS product...

To all the people who whine about SP 1. Stop b****ing about it. Just because YOU can't figure out how to install it doesn't mean it collectively sucks. Go contact M$ instead of whining in these forums and postings, and while you're doing that, go learn brush up on your computer knowledge too.

Warning!!
I installed SP1 on top of XP Home Edition.
Norton 2002 System Works will now not auto update.
More importantly, I can now no longer open up "Add/Remove Programs" from control panel. When I click on it, I get an error message! The message is "Value creation failed at line 472"!!! What is this crap?

Quite a long install time (P2 450mhz) on a Legal copy of WindowsXP Pro when choosing the Backup option incase I wish to remove this service pack. After rebooting the OS will not boot due to a corrupted or missing ntfs.dll or something. Prompted to restart and use the (R) Repair option from the windows Setup program. Thanks for messing up my install. - Repair did work thankfully and windows did boot after exiting the dosshell repair prompt. Somehow I doubt my XP Pro is anymore stable then it was, and more likey this Service pack just has more problems in it then its worth, obvious by the fact it cant even install itself correctly.

Yeah so you are buying a license -- just like every other piece of software you buy. You own the media it comes on, but you do not "own" the software. That's what intellectual property rights are all about.
