XnView is pretty incredible. I first tried out the "lite" (portable) version, and really appreciated all of its customization options, from colors to keyboard shortcuts. The interface is not bad, and also highly customizable (from super detailed to clean and neat). I enjoy and trust it so much that it I have now--finally--replaced my default photo viewer (Windows Live Photo Gallery). Oh, and it's freeware (with donations appreciated). Highly recommended.

I wanted to wean myself off of commercial software and P{aint Shop Pro with its integrated file manager was what I had been using. I hate Corel products - buggy junk with insidious nagware even in the paid versions - so the GIMP and Xnview became my mainstays. The combination is far superior to the Corel product.

Excellent image management tool.

FIVE stars.

Simple to use, reliable, full of useful tools for all your picture editing needs, and it reads every image format ever devised. ;) No other viewer does that. I can even view pictures from Atari or Commodore... Incredible program. It's not a bad file browser, too. Small and compact, portable, too. I cannot praise it enough. However, just one thing always bothers me with XNView: it feels slow. I mean especially filters and zoom in-out if filtering is enabled. Why not using hardware acceleration for that, and a little bit more efficient code. That would make me give it ten stars. :) So because the code feels a bit slow, just five stars. :) Thank you for a great program. I've been using it for like 10 years or so. [after ACDSee that became too bloated for me]

A superb viewer. I have checked a few including Irfanview and while both are excellent I prefer XNView.

Many of the "problems" that cause people to lower their grades for this program, can easily be solved by changing the configuration. One of XNViews strongest sides is its flexible and powerful configuration, but one has to invest some time choosing the ones that match you preferences.

stisev

Excellent pic viewer. Probably the best with irfanview.

Like another user said below, it could use a speed boost dealing with RAW + CR2 (canon raw) formats.

irfanview handles them so much faster!

Blaxima

I really do love XnView for it's power, simplicity and speed BUT, it's speed is reduced to a stand still when dealing with RAW images.

Still the absolute best graphics viewer. And it supports back and forward with the mouse - just that it uses the wheel rather than the buttons. Far better AFAIC, especially if you have a Logitech Nano or other mouse with the option for freespin wheel mode.

----------------------------------------------------

XnView is a very good free alternative but it lacks some little touches that hold it back. For instance, every other image viewer responds to clicking dedicated back buttons on a mouse and the options in general for keyboard and mouse shortcuts are too few

After looking trough and trying so many other programs, this is the only one that I have found that would do what I wanted! It allows me to just direct it to a folder and it will run the slideshow without having to select a million picture. None of the others would let me just select a folder. They all wanted you to add each photo, and well I am not spending hours to just make a slideshow.

I am having trouble with this program, it changes icons for pics even if it is not set to open some files. I get this ugly XnView icon. Have tried many different things (delete filetypes and then re-add them after a reboot, registryhacks and so on to revert back to the default icons again, but the only way is to uninstall XnView, reboot computer and set the associations for each file i want to have back to default icon and association again. Else i like this program, but it is blacklisted on my computers until there will be an easier way to restore icons and associations. Therefor i give it a 2.

Balderstrom

Balderstrom reviewed v1.97 on Dec 3, 2009

@ TGB72
I really think it depends on what you are using XnView | IrfanView for. IrfanView's line-command (batch-script processing) can't be beat as far as I know.
IrfanView : Viewer, Batch Processing, Minimal Editing, Thumb/Html.
XnView: Image Manager, Viewer, Complex Interface.

I find I still use IrfanView more often for quick access to files and manipulation of said files.

As far as Image Management is concerned, I prefer PicaJet -- hopefully they'll actually release v3 at some point.

For ease of use, Vista/Win7's explorer does most of what a basic user would need

TGB72

TGB72 reviewed v1.97 on Dec 1, 2009

Best image viewer, the only competitor is IrfanView, and XnView is a step ahead (the use of tabs is an advantage). Regarding to Faststone, is nice and fancy but it lacks of many essential features like batch filtering and adjusting during conversion and jpeg lossless transformation (including cropping). XnView is the king for the moment.

Keverin

Keverin reviewed v1.97 on Dec 1, 2009

I switched from FastStone (which has indeed a lot more features) to XnView because XnView is lightning fast at showing images, and that is the n°1 I want from an image viewer.

Other than that, perhaps the config menu could have some better layout, and some better wordings and pop-over help.

dhry

dhry reviewed v1.97 on Nov 30, 2009

This continues to be the best free graphics viewer available for Windows. Lightning-fast startup time, doesn't force you to use skins, absolutely no contest with Faststone. Irfan comes close but loses in the UI and graphic display speed departments. I run both this and Picasa and will probably continue to do so until XNView supports face recognition *8-)

And my version of ACDsee 3.1 expired so many years ago that I've forgotten whether it's better or not.

idodialog

idodialog reviewed v1.97 Beta 4 on Nov 25, 2009

Improved on the last version - but I still find FastStone better laid out and like its features better.
Xn allows for filters and though I haven't tried it has HTML pages but apart from that they have similar powers.
But where Xn takes a couple of steps to get to anything - FastStone has it's tools more accessible.

Bobad is on crack. 37mb? As anomoly said, the exe for XNView is under 4Mb. I just started up both XNView 1.96.2 and Faststone Viewer 3.9. Memory usage as follows:

XNView: 15,328k working memory, 79,228k virtual.
Faststone: 25,312k working, 88,036k virtual.

Not only is XNView faster and smaller (the minimal version's zipfile is just over 3Mb), it uses LESS system resources and it DOESN'T force you to use crapburger skins (which is why FS uses so much RAM and why it's interface is so sluggish). SNORT! I repeat: this is STILL the best freeware picture viewer and manipulator.

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v1.96.2 on Jul 2, 2009

There are several zip versions on their website. If you compress the exe in the standard version, the folder is only 6.45 MB. Whereas my installed folder is 696 MB. I have too many pictures.
The exe by itself, zip or installed, is 3.98 MB, not 1.5.

steve364

steve364 reviewed v1.96.2 on Jul 2, 2009

I have used this for years. I prefer the layout over other programs. Also if you think that it is too big for a pen drive, then all you need to have is xnview.exe set up as a portable. It is then only about 1.5Mb. By doing this you loose some of the extras that get installed with a full installation.

Edit:
@ anomally
It is about 1.5Mb if you use UPX to compress it. If you don't know what UPX is then you would not be using it anyway & you would be stuck with the original bigger file size.

bobad

bobad reviewed v1.96.2 on Jul 2, 2009

XnView is not a bad product. It does most of the things a picture viewer needs to do. However, the configuration is awkward, and requires a lot of tweaking to make it behave as I want it to . Another thing is, it's HUGE. Whereas FastStone is 5MB and IrfanView about the same, XnView is 37MB! That'll put the bite on your USB flash drive! I still recommend the program. It has good shell extension options, filters, and a choice to use an IN I file. But why use a huge "4" when you could be using a more powerful yet small, quick, tidy "5" in FastStone?

dhry

dhry reviewed v1.96.1 on Jun 26, 2009

Still the best freeware picture viewer/manipulator. Better than Faststone, better than Irfanview, better than Wildbit. Thumbnails work perfectly fine for me, and have done so on multiple computers for multiple years.

Blaxima

Blaxima reviewed v1.96.1 on Jun 9, 2009

This is good but frustrating and just because it's free that doesn't make it better than ACDSee Photo Manager v11 as some might have you believe. I too have the problem with thumbnails not displaying what I want them to. No matter what I put in the list all that shows are the file names. Only the tool tips will display what I say.

I find I use Faststone MaxView v2.1(still free) for quick viewing of images from explorer and Acdsee for browsing because of the lack of info in the damn thumbnail labels in xnview. I really wish this would be fixed because it is very quick on start up and I prefer it to the other free viewers for more than just quick views.

anomoly: It DOES display width x height in thumbnail view if you do this: Go to Options, Thumbnails, Thumbnails label, scroll down to Custom, write Width x Height in the field then add to list.

With this custom function, you can tailor made excactly what info you'd like to see in the preferred type of browser view.

And I just don't understand how people can say XnView is slow!?
It's as fast as any other image viewing program, depending on individual settings.
If settings is set to store the thumbnails (from pics and/ or video) in the database, EVERY program needs time to this when opening new files.
After that it opens immediately, even folders having 1000's of pics...

spacemarine

spacemarine reviewed v1.96 on Feb 25, 2009

Well Mr. Strider, no hard feelings ;), but I think
you are suffering from a lack of sensible judgement ;)
Rating XnView with two stars is just ridiculous.

Of course whether this is the one and only greatest image viewer
on earth might be subject to debate (for me it is), as everyone's preferences
are diffrent. But even though there are other great image viewers out there
this is definitely 5 star software.

Young Strider

Young Strider reviewed v1.96 on Feb 24, 2009

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v1.96 Beta 3 on Jan 28, 2009

I do prefer viewing any pictures with this program. But for the life of me it will NOT simply display widthxheight in browser view in the preferred thumbnail format.
The multiplatform version will but it seems almost crippled.
THIS is why fastone still remains on my pc. I can open a folder of files in a browser type view (of thumbnails) and instantly see which pics to resize. WTF is wrong with xnview it will not give me that info without destroying the thumbnail view.
Fix that s*** and I'll happily remove fastone. Till that time fastone is a much better program for batch conversion. NO, I don't want to convert the whole ****ing folder just the pics I choose based on their size. Fug it, I'll install irfanview instead.

cricri_pingouin

cricri_pingouin reviewed v1.96 Beta 2 on Jan 16, 2009

By far my favourite image viewer. I prefer it over Faststone without a thought (last time I checked, XnView was faster, snappier, and I cannot stand how FastStone enforces their skin over the standard Windows look that I carefully selected and am happy with). I do not personally like IrfanView (the interface didn't seem to mature since the Windows 16bits days), and if I'm going to use ACDsee, I'll want to use the classic version, and in which case I'd rather use the free XnView which gives ACDSee classic a run for its money.

"Free, more customizable, better and vastly more powerful editing tools, better integration into the windows platform."

XnView is also free, is as customisable (if you bother trying), "better" is not very descriptive, if you want powerful editing tools you can use photoshop filters (like the bundled Harry's filters), and I fail to understand what "better integration in the OS" means. If this is referring to files associations, than I can't see how a software can be better than another, thus I assume that I misunderstand what that means as well.

Comparing this with FastStone is ridiculous.
The "reviewer" below is completely clueless and is obviously working for FastStone or gets paid to write that FUD.
XnView is also completely free and has a normal UI, in stark contrast to FastStones horrible, customized, bloated and non-standard, "theme"-driven user-interface. No installation is required, unless you want to. Most formats supported. Builtin 8BF support (Photoshop Plugins).

Ever used ACDSee? This is the freeware version of that. Only a lot faster and less bloated.

"XnView's performance also suffers a bit when dealing with very large collections of images."

Agreed. I have nothing but praise for this app but I have noticed that on occasion, it will crash when dealing with a folder containing a high number of images. This issue manifests itself if you start to view files while the program is still updating the properties list for the folder - it's as if the program can't keep up. It does not happen regularly but this bug has persisted through at least five revisions now.

In the grand sceheme of things though, I find XnView indispensible and MUCH better than its competition across the board.

Definitely a great application for anyone seeking an efficient freeware viewer with an excellent UI.

XnView unfortunately doesn't support Unicode, which is a huge deal-breaker for anyone such as myself who has many non-english file and folder names.

XnView's performance also suffers a bit when dealing with very large collections of images.

If the above aren't concerns for you, you'd be remiss to give XnView a try.

Almost a 5 star, but it did today, what it has done in the past = crash. Working with a lot of photos to get up on Flickr, it suddenly simply over loaded and crashed. I went back to using FastStone for viewing and doing editing. For just a few photos, or to do a lot of work on just one, I will still use XNview. Good app. other than the occasional crash.

Nice freeware and another nice update. This is a great freeware product.

Many products when released as a beta don't offer an installer but it isn't necessary. Also, most people who use beta versions are more experienced. Decompressing an archive to the correct folder is not rocket science. If it is too complicated then, honestly, a person shouldn't be using a beta version. Making the author spend extra time to create an installer for a beta is somewhat ridiculous.

darkpepe

darkpepe reviewed v1.93.6 Beta 1 on Apr 17, 2008

Does a lot of editing considering it's just a picture viewer. Impressive!

DoHickey

DoHickey reviewed v1.93.6 Beta 1 on Apr 16, 2008

The reason for the 2 rating is because this zip has no install file. I like XnView and have the last installable version, but hey guys, make it possible to install the beta. Not everyone can figure out how to use this or even find it after it unpacks. I have friends that would open up Windows explorer and run in terror just from seeing how much stuff is on the machine.
(PS) No install file present in this package. So the later comment on my comment is unfounded. I do know how to unpack a zip file and all that. XnView just needs to make an install file & put it in the zip package. So shut up.

Great. But still, IrfanView is better as a viewer and ExifPro is THE best for photographers.

Cris3

Cris3 reviewed v1.93 on Mar 13, 2008

XnView works with formats that are not supported by Photoshop and is able to reformat images so that Photoshop CS3 can be used to edit them.

Both ACDsee and EXIF Pro have to be purchased.
Photographers don't need a viewer, but the formatting functions of XnView is quite useful.

To edit EXIF data use the free program PhotoMe at this website:
http://www.photome.de/home_en.html

DoHickey

DoHickey reviewed v1.93 Beta 3 on Mar 12, 2008

The reason I listed ACDsee 5.1 and not the newer versions is because I didn't like the newer versions of that program. Those later versions took a toll on my processor and memory. I got tired of restarting my computer so many times after doing a lot of editing and viewing mpeg files.
I've not had any problems with XnView at all & it's not taking as much processor & memory to use XnView. I can sit for hours and use the program for all kinds of photo & mpeg tasks without problems of any kind.

dhry

dhry reviewed v1.93 Beta 3 on Mar 11, 2008

Diam0nd

Diam0nd reviewed v1.93 Beta 2 on Mar 4, 2008

It's good, but not for using it as your viewer, imho. In that respect best is IrfanView, simply because its WAY faster. And for photographers best option is ExifPro.

DoHickey

DoHickey reviewed v1.93 Beta 1 on Feb 29, 2008

This is a very nice program, on my system it runs faster than ACDsee 5.1 does. The only problem I have with the Beta 1.93 is that it's a zip file & has no install.
I unzipped it with WinZip and it made a folder under my unzipped folder & unpacked it. The files in that folder are the program itself and no install file is present.
The toolbar could have an easier selection, it's not easy to find the editor.

dhry

dhry reviewed v1.93 Beta 1 on Feb 27, 2008

Couldn't care less about the number of formats it supports - nobody uses anything except JPG, PNG and GIF. But this program is still damn good - does a lot of stuff and has been around for ages (ie very stable). And it isn't bloatware either.

Can't display multiple page icons propery in thumbnail view. (Actually those are icons with several formats embedded in a single icon)

Instead it shows the lowest quality icon in the icon file and even that is only black&white.

Also whenever I try to signup to the forum I failed. Btw forum language is French.

For me this is the best alternative to ACDSee. I can understand why some people would use something else (IRFanview, for example), since we all seem to want ACDSee without the bloat and all the free alternatives lack something...
I still find some features I use often much harder to use than they have to be (the resize function for example). The "Do you want to overwrite it?" when trying to save any kind of opened image (not just when 'saving as..') is really annoying and non-standard.
But still. It's vastly superior to ACDbloat and that's what counts.

XNView is also free, so I'm not sure your comments about Faststone Viewer being free are relevant to why you would use that program instead.

Frankly, any program that steals away your ability to control the appearance of your programs through windows is the victim of extremely bad design. Nobody knows better what I want my programs to look like than I do. XNView has the good sense not to mess with this.

It's clearly better than IrfanView, without a doubt. IV was nice some years beack, but has hardly changed since then (looks like its discontinued), so it's looking very outdated by now.

I used to use XV along with FastStone IV, but switched completely to FastStone recently as there are some things it does clearly better - like cropping images (cropping with XV is a pain), much more and better image manipulation options, superior batch processing etc.

FastStone's Jp2 support is just fine, btw - even better than XV's one, I'd say.

This seems to me quite obviously the best freeware application of its type. I find it a bit slower (not much; just a bit) than ACDSee 9 Photo Manager, but given the price, I'll deal with it.

Some things are not as easy to do as with ACDSee, but again, for the price...

When saving or converting images to JPG (and perhaps other formats), don't expect the same quality you would get with something like Paint Shop Pro. I've compared the two side-by-side, using similar file sizes and compression levels, and XnView doesn't fare as well.

Another point release!

"You lost ANOTHER one, andre?"

Geez - FOUR stars for letting stupid bugs out the door after an extended testing cycle.

Edit:

Two immediate releases following a Final which came after a long beta and ridiculously long RC program and STILL this thing has bugs that crash it doing simple file moves via drag 'n' drop. It also crashes on simple file operations when it can't update the image properties ingformation fast enough if you do several fast file views / deletes in quick succession. Its a nice and powerful image viewer and organizer. It has several options to manipulate images. Support batch conversions and rename. In batch conversions you can apply operations to the target images, veryful and handy. My only complain would be a problem dealing with large number of files (100+), I'm not sure if this is because the cache options is off, I don't like to cache images.

Some of the "deficiencies" reported in other reviews, do not exist. For example, there is no problem to configure the software so that it opens pictures automatically in full window, and the ESC works fine in such a case.

Not a bad program, but it's not really built for speed. ACDSee allows you to cache images backward and forward when viewing. XNView theoretically does ("read one image ahead" option), but in practice when viewing images, there is a noticeable delay of half a second to a second when you press SPACE to go to the next image. What it appears to be doing is loading the image, but then when you press space it actually does the high-quality fit to screen AFTERWARDS, then displays the image. Reading an image ahead should mean reading and preparing the image for INSTANT display upon pressing space. Still a great program, but the lag in viewing is pretty much a dealkiller for me. I'd recommend using this for batch image editing etc - but for viewing, it's still ACDsee or even Picasa.

zridling

zridling reviewed v1.82.1 on Feb 7, 2006

Seems to be a lot of false criticism based on misinformation or sheer non-use of XnView, since all these problems I'm reading cannot be replicated. XnView is primarily a viewer and has never pretended to be an image editor. Sure, it can do a few basic operations, but that's not its purpose. It's built for speed and agility, not for bloat.

matt2971

matt2971 reviewed v1.82.1 on Feb 7, 2006

bobad, it opens full screen for me with a doubleclick, and exits back to the browser on escape - not sure if this is the default action or my setup, but it's certainly possible!

This has been my image viewer for a few years now... for the casual user this is the best available IMO.

bobad

bobad reviewed v1.82 Final on Feb 7, 2006

Nice program, but what kind of program is it really? I can't call it a picture viewer, because it doesn't allow opening pictures for viewing in full screen. To go full screen requires another mouse click, and then escape doesn't exit instantly as it should. The program is very configurable, and that's a good thing. The bad thing is, the configuration tool is not intuitive, and takes a lot of looking around to get it right,,, and after all the hassle, you can't even get it right. I think the program tries to do too many things, and does nothing well. It's also very large and bloated. Yes, this program is useful and usable if you invest a lot of time getting used to all the quirks and configuring it. For a better picture viewer with quick editing, try FastStone. It's about 1/3 the size, and the default configuration is perfect for viewing pictures. It works great in combination with PhotoFiltre, for heavier-duty editing needs.

photonboy

photonboy reviewed v1.82 Final on Feb 7, 2006

If programs such as Picasa were not available I might have given this five stars. It reminds me of earlier versions of ACDSee.

It's a good program, especially for the price. If you are very serious about photography I highly recommend ACDSee. Picasa is also popular, but I really don't like the way they organize the pictures.

Having said all this, it's best to start with freeware, and if it suits all your needs why pay for something you don't need? I really like the open source concept. I hope it really lasts. (about four years ago I anticipated that in 2006 I'd be using Linux and almost all free software. Instead I'm looking forward to Vista and I have purchased ACDSee, Zoomplayer Pro etc)

Excellent image viewer and image batch processor. All of it's features are polished, and it offers full support for IPTC metatagging. This app is a very good choice for power users who need a rock-solid and full-featured image utility. I frequently reivew software for clients, and XnView has been tops on my list for some time. It's strongest point is in batch processing. Nearly everything about an image can be batch processed- including image size, rotation, brightness, contrast, file name, file name case changes, and IPTC meta tagging. I too switched from IrfanView to XnView about a year ago.

Folks, easiest way to deal with constant updates: say your install is at Program Files/Xnview...just have your decompress process extract to Program Files-- then each folder/subfolder: from Xnview on down, will receive needed newer versions.
Needless to say, make a backup copy of entire Xnview install, so that in case of some new issue(or even coincidental system problem) you won't need to trash the review rating.
And if yuo get a problem when using it in non-installed manner, try the alternative-- to see if the issue disappears.

It is difficult to go back and forth from browser to fullscreen. Dumb preview windows cover up picture when making adjustment. Program freeze when navigating more than 2000 file. Sloppy dialogs too big for some desktops (too small and antiquated for new high resolution monitors). It is a great picture cropper in fullscreen (if you are able to choose the right fullscreen). It has good renamer and batch convertor. It is almost portable and doesn't alter or add to system files. A great many buggy option which should be greyed out instead of just hanging around. Average grade from me only because most other programs are just horribly bad. Its better than most, but that does not make it great.

I dumped ACDSee for Compupic years ago, and then went looking for a freebie that was most similar to Compupic. I've settled on XnView and I love it. It is fast, caches thumbnails quickly, has lots of options, and for me it works a lot like Compupic. (Caching thumbs is an essential which most other programs miss).

I was very concerned when Pierre released a deluxe version that cost money, fearing that free XnView would die or be badly crippled. Thankfully so far that hasn't happened. If it was open source and the author tried to cripple it and release a pay version, others could take the last open source version and fork it and save the program. Unfortunately I haven't found an open source one that is as great as XnView- maybe someday.

Try "Picasa2" and then rate this program if you want to compare freeware. (Lots of people love it. I wonder if it's freeware days are numbered?)

As for ACDSee:
What do you people mean by "bloated?" Bloated refers to the efficiency of the code and NOT the size of the program.
ACDSEE v8 will open in ONE SECOND on my system (after it's been opened once). If you "Catalog Files" in the "Database" then the thumbnails open almost instantaneously. I had two hundred thumbnails in a directory open in one second. It makes good use of memory, is optimized to start quickly and will "optimize the database" for even quicker accessibility. This is the OPPOSITE of bloatware.
This software just keeps getting better and better. I love the ability to resize and email automatically.
I think many people are mistaking "bloatware" for having lots of features. If you can get by with freeware then you don't need this. I have compared it to every program there is and if you use enough of the features it is definitely worth the price.
There are so many great features I can't even begin to list them. I have used ACDSee since the very first version and it is truly amazing.
I understand that many people only need a few options so Xnview may be a desireable choice. But to compare it to shareware that has tonnes more features is comparing apples to oranges.

oomingmak

oomingmak reviewed v1.81 Beta on Oct 15, 2005

Hmmm... I have not tried this program for quite a while, but I was interested to note that this version now rivals IrfanView for speed (for example in opening large JPEG200 images). When I last tried XNView (quite some time ago) IrfanView was much faster. However, this program seems to have been written much better than IrfanView (not difficult because IrfanView is a total mess code wise and this has created all sorts of limitation with regard to extensibility). The approach is cleaner and more modern (e.g. proper support for metadata).

I have to say I don't like all this browsing stuff in XNView (I much prefer just a simple viewer) but the program is flexible enough to allow you to set it up so that you don't have to see all the browsing / slideshow stuff, and these extra features have not bloated out the program because the install files are still pretty small.

I like the option of having a choice of install types. I personally prefer zip installs (no regsistry junk added and you can delete any files that you dont want). Also you can get a minimal install to keep the installation nice and light, and then just add support for whatever formats you need by using the zipped plugin download.

Skin support is good to have (although there are some really dodgy themes included as standard). My favourite is the Mezich skin.

This program looks like it's going in the right direction (provided that the developer doesn't go down the crazy "try to do every single thing in one program" route. The menus are getting a bit overfilled as it is.

Thank you BenZin for your second qualified comment: By now we know that you are a fan of FastStone Viewer. FastStone viewer is definitely also quite good, but no point to give bad ratings, here.

For those who are searching for a powerful viewer it's worth while downloading and evaluating both of them (both are freeware).

Finally fixed the file association probs. Worth being the topdog again. Thanks

Opened up jpg & tried to print through interface in landscape & it still spat out in portrait screwing up the aspect along the way. Had to print through IrFanview & landscape worked. SEEMS THERE STILL MAY BE BUGS

I must admit, having used Irfanview for nearly 5 years, I have now defected to this. As I occasionally use other operating systems than Windows, I find the thought of retaining a graphic browser across platforms appealing. There's work to be done, but this really is exceptional in an overcrowded software category.

zridling

zridling reviewed v1.80.1 on Jun 29, 2005

Yikes man, 2.42 was released about years ago — are you still using Windows95 too? ACDSee 8 will surprise everyone, but XnView ROCKS.

P.S. software usualy moves from beta to RC when all the planned features have been implemented but bug fixing is still in progress. Would you rather have 1.8, 1.81, 1.82 etc?

Qlib

This program is just so good its ridiclous.. and who cares if it goes to RC30 as long as it means its rock stable (something ACDSee doesnt know what means) and fast (another thing ACDSee has no idea what means) not to mention useful with a good set of support for formats (yet another thing ACDSee has no idea about).. not to mention its FREE.. something.. heh.. ACDSee isnt..

oh yea.. did i mention size and the lack of bloated garbagefeatures nobody uses anyway that ACDSee is LOADED with?..

FastStone really doesn't come close to XnView's feature set as a image viewer, instead focusing on minor editing functions. If you're wanting to simply view and catalog your photo collection, ACDSee is the best followed by XnView.

So I loaded RC2 and see that it does in fact allow you to drag a very large image around.

You have to use the right click button to achieve this though but in fullscreen mode from the browser allows the left click button to have this function.

It's not perfect but it's pretty good.

PS: I love the tabs

PSS: I'll have to go through this app more thoroughly to find all it's new features.

I think I have at least tried almost every application doing or trying to do same things as XnView does. And still I always have returned to use XnView. There are several good programs of this kind (for instance ACDSee until version 5 and Cam2PC etc.) but I find XnView the best of all. It is very light (in resources) and fast, highly configurable, it has a great many features etc. etc.

I used ACDSee 5 PowerPack for a very long time. I finally got tired of its slowness and aggravating bugs, and started looking for something better. The ACDSee 7 PowerPack was a disaster for me (see my review of it). I tried a bunch of other commercial packages, and disliked them all. So, I gave in and tried XnView.

I was expecting total junk. Everyone raves about freeware, even if it's crap. That's just the way it is; people grade on a wild curve.

But what a pleasant surprise... XnView is great. Better format support, a MUCH cleaner install, speed, less bloat, a configurable toolbar, good looks, obviously a better price tag... you name it.

I have not been using XnView for long, but I did look for quality markers such as: When it takes over file associations, does it back up the previously-used master file type first? (Yes, it does.) Does it let you effectively disable MRU lists? (Yes, it does.) And so on.

But I can't help but feel that XnView is lacking something ACDSee has... What is it? Oh, I know! Bloat, a ridiculous price tag, and privacy-robbing phone-home features. Silly me.

Let me set the record straight since I work on WindowBlinds. It does NOT install hooks all over the place. Rather it uses a single system hook. Microsoft also installs a system hook. This can be easily proven - when you are running an msstyle theme, open up any process in a profiler and you will find the DLL uxtheme.dll attached to every process. That is because when you run an msstyle, all messages get filtered through uxtheme.dll. In other words, it's very inaccurate to claim that msstyles are some how more native or faster than WindowBlinds. A better description would be to say that they're bundled with XP. Instead of wblind.dll you have uxtheme.dll. So why is WindowBlinds faster? Because WindowBlinds makes use of video card acceleration for drawing whereas msstyles (currently) do not. It has to be remembered that we worked closely with Microsoft during the development of Windows XP. I can assure you, if there'd been no WindowBlinds, there'd be no msstyles, their implementation is nearly identical to WindowBlinds 2.12 (an older version of WB which had no hardware acceleration). There is also the fact that WindowBlinds can skin non-theme aware applications precisely because it isn't tied to Common Controls 6 (which we too can use when available). Ultimately, it boils down to whether the given solution meets the user's needs. Both have their good points. But please do not imply that WindowBlinds is somehow slower or less native because it's not. At its core, they are almost identical in implementation, hooks and all. WindowBlinds EXTENDS visual styles.

It is unbeatble graphic mate, very powerful, i could call it The Ultimate Mate (TUM) but i can't. It is much better.. i use it for viewing, reading, writing, browsing, slideshowing, in shower (sorry..)... and it is more compact than irfanview (it is less than 2Mb). Irfan view exceeds 2MB limit so you can combine it any where and it can fit a "SINGLE FLOPPY DISK" it is true a use floppy with 1.72MB size.... i have use it for Five years since v1.03 and till now i couldn't find a replacement.. i dare anyone who could.. Five years is not good.. it is perfect.. some features i like: 1- reading >350 formats 2- writing >45 formats (you can save very powerful one's) 3- converting.
