NewsLeecher's latest (3.7) version seems to have finally passed Xnews in overall usability and a solidified feature set, despite Xnews being one of the easiest and fastest newsreaders ever developed. Being able to turn off text comments are well worth it, for instance. Still, an excellent option.

A superb reader that I have used for four years. There's dedication. I have tried many others, but only Xnews delivers so much that I want.

The GUI is to my liking, which helps. We all have different tastes and Xnews suits mine.

I have one key gripe (but Xnews is so good it still gets the 5, just). The use of archives rather than folders to store downloaded segments - it's risky. I have yet to fully evaluate v6.02.16b and will specifically test handling of >2Gig archives. v5.04.25 looses segments if the 2Gig boundary is exceeded in win98se, win2k and winXP. If this has been fixed, Xnews becomes still more formidable - and I will post accordingly. Currently, I get round the problem by running multiple queues and archives.

Two suggestions: 1. Consider alternative segment storage. 2. How about scheduling of downloads - the icing on the cake?

roj, please don't tell me you're against customizable keyboard shortcuts! I think the key is that once you get accustomed to using any newsreader, you tend to stick with it. Luu Tran is back to developing Xnews and it's fun to see. I'd be interested in knowing what others' favorite newsreaders are. I think my second choice would be a tossup between NewsBin Pro and NewsLeecher.

IF YOU READ THE MANUAL, you'll find the Xnews does more than any other major newsreader. Lots to love here, and the UI is built around keyboard shortcut customization and workflow efficiency. And for the freeware nuts, you can't carp about its price.

Not a great interface at all - will take a lot of getting used to. Super Gravity is still the king of newsreaders as far as I'm concerned, and it's scot free too.

THE best, bar none. It's simple, it works, has customizable keyboard shortcuts, is unlimited, and for all the shareware haters, is free. And if you say XNews' interface is complicated or bad, you're just trolling, and likely have never even installed it.

Xnews ... simple, powerful, and free! After over a year with no releases, we get a small bugfix release. yippie! At least it's something. But with all the other great newsreaders out there still under active development, some free, some not (Forte Agent, Newsleecher, Mesa News ...) how much longer until Xnews is left in the dust?

THE most efficiently designed newsreader ever built. Xnews is proof that when you build it right the first time, it sets an industry standard. Also, Luu Trann originally built Xnews for his own use, and when a developer has to use his own program, he's forced to either live with or fix problems quickly and effectively.

I'm sure the program is very powerfull, but the User Interface needs some serious work, as it's very confusing with some bad UI example everywhere.

For as long as I've been using UseNet, Xnews has been the only newsreader that I've felt comfortable using. I've tried OE, Mozilla Mail, Power-Grab, Agent, Grabit, etc., which are all good. But Xnews is the only ones that provided all the features I needed, in addition to being easy to use and navigate and finish jobs quickly.

To be more accurate, Luu will not be actively updating Xnews, in favor of gigs that actually pay to put food on his table. Can't say I blame him: all his work on Xnews is greatly appreciated... Xnews is a top-notch, amazing program.

What do you mean abandonware? How many news readers have yEnc support? Hell, most of the lame news readers that you pay for don't even have it! Tran has done a wonderful job of a program--I have been using it sense I left NewsXpress and went to this one. If you want simplicity go back to Outlook.

This is the best newsgroup app!! It is nice that it doesn't use Windows registry to store its settings so you have almost no work if you reinstall Windows.
