This was the Bee's Knee's about 6-8 years ago when using Vdub/Gknot etc.
The whole .avi scenario has slowed to a crawl ..... (Altho still very popular).
Today's TV's have media players Embedded which will deal with most formats,
Not just DivX as it was a few years back.

H264 mkv/mp4 is Today's preference for Myself. With Lossless Editing & very fast Lossless Re-Codes. My main App's for Lossless work are .... MKV Toolnix .... Xmedia ReCode .... VideoReDo .... & there's a cutter which is quite Good but Isn't mentioned much.. Mpg2Cut2
For a "Full" ReCode my pref is (Tipard MKV video Converter). VERY highly configurable outside of the UI @Local Settings\App Data\~\~\user_profile.data
- It will convert "Just about", .any to .any

DivXviD gets 5* for it's worth 8yrs ago. In reality tho...... 3* for still being there.
A "Big" Thanx to all the contributers of this Open Source Codec....... ~_^

This new version has a bug/problem when decoding videos at more then 100% their original size. The video pixelates badly.

I have tested many players to see if it was MPC's fault but it was not.

Hopefully, Koepi or the Xvid team addresses this soon.

@Artem & cowgaR
There is no comparison between Xvid & H.264 in terms of quality, is like compare MPEG1 with MPEG2, they are different generation of codecs.
Anyway, Xvid still being the best MPEG-4 ASP codec, and I find it incredible useful because of the low resource usage and the compatibility with old standalone dvd players.
For those that have top notch hardware and a nice plasma to enjoy the H.264 quality, yes probably there is no reason to continue using Xvid.

Always does the job for me. XD

Yeah it's srouce code only on the official website, but koepi @ http://koepi.info/ compiles it for people, and so do the guy(s) @ http://www.xvidvideo.ru/ I think (Has seperate x86 and x64 downloads there, site is in both english and russian and seems to be down at the time of writing this).

edit: h.264 and xvid are two different mpeg4 types (h.264 being mpeg4 part 10 which allows it to have same quality video at lower bitrate). I would probly use h.264 myself but my xbox1 with XBMC can't handle it too well. ^_^

I've used Xvid 1.1.3, but I find myself unable to use 1.2.1. Could someone at Xvid actually compile the code, please?
Then people who are not programmers might actually use it.

Binaries, people, binaries!

As to it not being better than DivX, I'll take XviD image quality over DivX any day. The rest of the feature set is irrelevant to me. Also, player like Cowon iAudio support XviD, because it's free, open and easily licensed. It is the mp3 of video formats for just that reason.

FIVE stars.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.2.1 on Dec 4, 2008

This really is a great codec, and I'm glad to see it mature over time.

I still wish that there was an equivalent to the Open Source Dr. DivX 2.0 interface to simplify the encoding process using Xvid instead of Divx, but that's not the fault of the codec.

I like the idea of supporting this non-commercial product, even if it may be seen as being a hair behind DivX in terms of the quality of the final render.

Keep up the good work.

rseiler

rseiler reviewed v1.2.0 on Dec 2, 2008

Isn't h.264 better than both? I don't know, I'm asking.

Banquo

Banquo reviewed v1.2.0 on Dec 1, 2008

Not as good as Divx? I can tell a divx movie from an xvid as soon as it starts playing, they look like crap in comparison. Xvid is much better quality, and it's free and open source.

poundsmack

poundsmack reviewed v1.2.0 on Dec 1, 2008

@roj:

while I agree it is good it is not as good as Divx, it is just more open. the Divx pro codec still beats out Xvid 1.2

also Divx 7 (still in beta) has FAR more capabilities than Xvid on every front. but like I said, Xvid is great and i love what they are doing with it. keep up the good work.

Now, where the hell are the Windows binaries?

FIVE stars.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.1.3 on Apr 18, 2008

Still wish I could find some interface / app like Doctor Divx that would use the Xvid codec instead, but I'm still having trouble with that, and as a result, a novice like me in codecs is having trouble actually taking advantage of the codec itself.

Even with that, I'm fully aware of what a great alternative Xvid can be and having viewed the work of others in that format, achnowledge just how good the video quality of the Xvid codec can be.

Good work and thanks to the developers.

It's kind of like how it was with the latest updates of the LAME codec until I found BonkEncoder. I struggled taking full advantage of what LAME could offer until I found BonkEncoder. I was a huge AudioGrabber fan, but it has not been updated in years, so I'm glad I found an alternative.

If anyone finds an interface like Doctor Divx, only one that takes full advantage of the updated Xvid features, I sure hope they post.

Works great. While I agree that most users here don't know how to compile source code, and I think its a pain, the legalities surrounding the project do not allow it to distribute compiled binaries. However, the codec itself is one of the most useful unshackled video codecs (shackled either by licensing bodies or private companies, i.e. MPEG consortium or Divx). Divx is a fantastic codec, and its come a long way from the 4.x tree (i just watched a video the other day using it.. wow I had low standards back then).

Like my previous reviewer, you can find xvid binaries here. (hopefully they'll compile and post soon, as this is an early review):
http://www.koepi.org

Looking forward to 1.2 stable. SMP (multiprocessor) support. Snap! You can try a beta here:
http://koepi.org/XviD-1.2.-127-25022006.exe

I noticed a hefty speed increase on my dual xeon videostation.

I would use the latest ffdshow filters for decoding most video. As well I recommend the AC3 audio filter (v1.02test3) and software like BSPlayer, Jetaudio ,Zoomplayer or WMPC 6.4.8.4. Each has its pros and cons.

I still gave this a five as I use it as an encoder and I think it's about the best around.

I find DivX 5 to produce a bit cleaner image and less blocking in dark area at the same bitrates as XviD yet DivX 5 also produce a file size a fair bit larger at the same bitrates. XviD is still great but I know DivX is still the future (assuming the MPAA allows it).
