Not bad, but better ones are available. I prefer www.lookeen.net which is a great tool, and very fast and reliable.

Not as good as Google Desktop which just blows the competition away. X1 is very good, but its strengths have not been integrated into Yahoo efficiently.

I have used lot of search tools (starting from Wilbur, which existed long ago before Google and others came).
The preview feature is "the killer item" for me.
Nice surprise that both view ans search works also with AutoCad, OpenOffice files etc.
Google is a pale text app compared to Yahoo.
I am just fan of well working apps. without preference to any clan or group. Yahoo works fine and is a very good application.
I tried Copernic half ear ago, but I selected Yahoo instead.

After using Copernic, Google, and the rest of the lot, when I want to find a file quickly I always can with YDS. I don't know about support because I've yet to need any.

As for resources, what I do is have it load at start-up and run a few minutes to index anything I've added since the previous start-up, and then close it out. Using it that way, I see essentially zero resources used and I can always find what I need.

I've been using YDS for a while now. I think it's far superior to Google. For starters, Google will only include the first 500 words of a document in your search. Also, I hate the fact that it keeps a cached version of deleted documents. It might be really handy for some people, but it bugs me. I've also checked out Copernic, which I think is very good. I like it's small foot print, and it seems really stable. The main reason I don't use Copernic is that they're very conservative with PDF files. If there is any sort of restriction on the file you are not permitted to search its content. This is not the case with YDS. Anyhow, YDS I find is a brilliant piece of software. It might not search Opera mail, or whatever, but whatever. I guess everything can't be supported. My main complaint with it is that they have poor support. Their forum is really poor. There's little information on their main page. Indeed, you can't even tell that they have a new version if you go to their page! Poor support. Anyhow, check it out. Or check out Copernic, also quite good.

Copernic Desktop Search.

For my purposes Copernic is 95% perfect. The only thing I could even come up with is to have Videos shrink to fit the Copernic window especially with High-Definition files.

While I can't give the Yahoo DS high marks either, no DS searches "on the fly". Not sure what that's about, but its just plain wrong. I have been testing ALL the DS and the best one is Copernic, which requires some background to index files and update email. It does everything great. What it DOES NOT do is Notes in Outlook, something you would use on an exchange server. So that sucks. But other than that, its fast, low memory requirement, and its full feature. The other DS DO NOT do global address book, like Microsoft which does Notes. Yahoo does do Global address book, no Notes, but the interface is really bad. Its very ugly and hard to use, you have to customize each window, so contacts can be set one way, Emails another way, and Files another.. If you change one to suit your likes, the others will have to be manually done. Its still beta, but it has a looooong way to go.

Google is at the bottom of the list, its very basic, does nothing. A few files on your computer.. yeah, that's handy, not.

Yahoo! Desktop Search (Y!DS) is based on X1 Search.
The latest beta (v5.1) of X1 supports Mozilla/Thunderbird mail. I don't know what version of X1 was used for Y!DS, but maybe
when X1 5.1 will be released, also Y!DS will be updated.
But don't count on it; otherwise, why would people need to buy X1?

Still no go for Thunderbird or Opera. Thumbs down!

Copernic Desktop Search is best with great support.
GoogleDS comes in second.

I can't give this a high score because it does not index "on-the-fly" which I consider a necessity.

It has great potential and I may use it if they add this feature.

I use Copernic Desktop Search 1.5 Beta. I have had no problems with this and any improvements I would make are minor.

Contrary to many enthusiastic reviews my experience with Yahoo! Desktop Search is rather bitter. First of all it made my machine pretty slow, secondly it had problems with non Latin characters (maybe Americans do not need them...;-)), thirdly it had problems with opening some formats. Came back to Copernic Desktop Search 1.2 http://www.copernic.com/...sktop-search/index.html (there is a newer, beta version of CDS, but it seems to be quite buggy). I wrote two e-mails to Yahoo, but nobody responded.

I've been using Copernic Pro and Copernic Agent for years, but this is a lot better than their Desktop Search. I'm really surprised at how easy this is to use.
