Hey Buggle
Thanks, I know the changes are extensive, my only complaint was the changelog sent with the download didn't relect the correct year 2009. I use E-Mule all the time, I just downloaded Beta 2 and of course the changelog problem has been corrected and this is the only product I use for file sharing!!! It's far & away the best.
dikbozo reviewed v0.49c Beta 1 on Feb 8, 2009
I have used this app for quite some time. It does what is it supposed to. It is very good for getting rare and hard to find files. The search function is in need of beefing up as it is a bit anemic when searching servers. Kad is great but works better when you run this app for a long period. I use it quite regularly for large files, such as archives and long form movies.
The hew tweaks such as individual file selection and keyword rearranging are very welcome. I like this app as it does not use too much CPU or RAM, even when doing saving of files. The time consuming nature of transfers is something that could be worked on.
Buggle reviewed v0.49c Beta 1 on Feb 7, 2009
steve, you might want to check the forum of the emule project site. There's a mile long changelog there with every tiny detail.
Some of the most notable changes are:
* Ability to share and unshare single files instead of directories only and also support of Drag&Drop to do so easily
* Support of new security features on Windows Vista (and partially also XP) to further harden eMule against any possible exploits
* Automatic recovery of corrupt part.met files by using the backupfiles
* Kad improvements like automatic search-keyword rearranging (allowing searches like 'an eMule' and also helping to reduce load on busy nodes), avoiding fragmented UDP packets (making it more compatible to zealous firewalls) and other changes
* Improving UPnP by refreshing the mappings as well as adding Webinterface support
* And as always fixing bugs and adding other small changes

I rarely use this anymore, but it's good for the occasional rare file. The interface and setup isn't beginner friendly, so I've never been able to convince my nongeeky friends to stick with it. A lot of fake, incomplete files, you will spend a lot more time babysitting this app than set and forget. Still, I have found what I needed on this as opposed to other apps, so for that it gets a "good" rating.

Qlib , if your calling the USA a dictatorship you would not be able to post on here , you would answer to the local police or you would be monitored by the government for your actions against the state. In the USA your able to talk about FREEDOM something you forgot. Ohh by the way your ISP could be your problem. Also the other guys posting on here are only trying to help . If you don't like this site go somewhere else. That's called freedom.
Qlib reviewed v0.49b on Aug 2, 2008
njeske, I did consider that but other people dont have any issues on the same ISP.. so.. I dont get it..I also dont live in a dictatorship regime country like USA og CHINA..
and to the retard thezelda, dont assume so much.. after 20 years of geekness a router is hardly a challenge.. but thats ok.. I'm checking the sourcecode myself for any potential issues.. it may be hardware sure but hardly cos the router isnt setup properly.. and if the router is set in the DMZ then port forwarding is IRRELEVANT.. so next time read the fu*king text before you start acting like a g**d*** immature scriptkiddie...
the fact that you like AZUREUS.. a hopelessly
inefficcient java based resourcehog and piece of garbage says it all
..and netstarman, I hardly call thezelda's post useful.. I also just ran EFF's new toolie to find out if the ISP did anything funny.. nope.. not a thing..

Excellent software. This is what has been fixed/added since the 0.49A version of eMule.
Changelog for 0.49b
eMule 0.49b
-----------------------
- Jul, 31. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed some rare possible crashes
eMule 0.49b BETA2
-----------------------
- Jul, 28. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Added deleting of single entries from AutoComplete drop down lists by pressing the DEL key.
.: Added a new search method option "Automatic" which lets eMule choose which search method to use. eMule will select either Servers (Local) or Kad, based on which network we are connected to and some other indicators if connected to both networks.
.: Removed a general exception handler for the Beta version. This means eMule crashes instead of ignoring unexpected errors, which however is needed so we actually can find such bugs (if any exist) in the crashdumps.
-----------------------
- Jul, 26. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Implemented a special nodes.dat version, which is more suited for mass distribution without causing significant additional traffic for the included nodes. This hopefully allows us to add a nodes.dat to the installer, so that new user can connect to Kad without having to connect to servers or downloading a nodes.dat themself
-----------------------
- Jul, 15. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Implemented an alternate method to estimate the total user count in the Kad network, which is not based on our local routing table. Its experimental and only shown in the network dialog (double click the world icon in the status bar)
.: Adjusted the displaying of the user count by not showing numbers for a network we are nto connected to
-----------------------
- Jul, 14. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed a minor bug with kad obfuscation when contacting answering unbofuscated hello-requests
.: Made sure that only one challenge to verify a contact is sent at a time to the same IP
eMule 0.49b BETA1
-----------------------
- Jul, 11. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Added MiniUPnPLib as additional UPnP implementation, the current Windows service based implementation is used as fallback. This will hopefully make eMule's UPnP compatible to most available routers. [miniupnplib by Thomas Bernard, Test & Suggestion: leuk_he]
.: A specific UPnP implementation can be disabled by adding "DisableMiniUPNPLibImpl=1" or "DisableWinServImpl=1" into the "UPnP" section of the preferences.ini
-----------------------
- Jul, 5. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: When reading a nodes.dat without any verified contacts (possible an old file version), eMule will assume all contacts to be verified to avoid slowing down the connecting process
.: Project files for VS2005 and VS2008 have been added, however the official eMule is still developed and compiled on VS2003
-----------------------
- Jun, 27. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Several changes were made to Kad in order to defy routing attacks researched by University of Minnesota guys [Peng Wang, James Tyra, Eric Chan-Tin, Tyson Malchow, Denis Foo Kune, Nicholas Hopper, Yongdae Kim], in particular:
.: Kad contacts will only be able to update themself in others routing tables if they provide the proper key (supported by 0.49a+ nodes) in order to make it impossible to hijack them
.: Kad uses now a three-way-handshake (or for older version a similar check) for new contacts, making sure they do not use a spoofed IP
.: Unverified contacts are not used for routing tasks and a marked with a special icon in the GUI
-----------------------
- Jun, 22. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed: Shared Files window splitter did not properly save/restore position.
.: Did first small step in dropping Kad1 support by not probing unknown Kad contacts for Kad1 anymore to save overhead. Kad1 clients will nevertheless still be work for now.
.: Fixed a bug which let Kad sometimes assume a Kad2 contact to be Kad1 after probing for both versions
-----------------------
- Jun, 18. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed: Memory leak in context menus.
.: Added: Vista styles for context menus.
-----------------------
- Jun, 12. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed: Pressing ESC in Shared Files window filter destroyed the entire window.
-----------------------
- Jun, 10. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Added additional sanitize checks to make sure eMule never writes downloaded data into an already completed part
.: Optimized the Kad packettracking code to only tack packets which we check later, to save ressources
-----------------------
- Jun, 9. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed 100% CPU usage bug with tooltips in Statistics Graphs.
.: Added: Tooltip in Statistics Graphs show the Y-value.
.: Kad no longer tries to add UDP firewalled (and therefore mostly unreachable) nodes into its routing table, reducing overhead and increasing reliability [Idea: Netfinity]
.: Kad tries to determine the overall ration of firewalled clients in the Kad network and shows them in the statistics tree. This will only work if you are not firewalled yourself and know enough 0.49b+ nodes
.: When calculating the total user count, Kad now uses (if available) the real number of firewalled clients for the calculation instead a fixed value. This will take more effect when 0.49+ nodes become common
-----------------------
- Jun, 5. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: The "Handle eD2k-Links" button now also works properly with Vista's UAC enabled
-----------------------
- May, 31. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Added: Unshare context menu entries for directories within the virtual "Shared Directories" folder.
-----------------------
- May, 28. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Added: Vista themes for all owner drawn tab controls.
.: Added: Vista themes for category selector controls.
-----------------------
- May, 25. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed main toolbar redrawing problems under Vista.
.: Reworked connecting code, fixing some minor and some major bugs, including a possible loop in unreachable DirectCallback sources
-----------------------
- May, 19. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Added new close icons for closeable tab controls.
.: Kad now ignores multiple IDs pointing to one IP in routing request answers
-----------------------
- May, 18. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed: Tab controls were not sized correctly on certain text contents.
-----------------------
- May, 17. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed: Category tabs in Transfers window did not show correct default text color.
.: Fixed: Category properties dialog did not always show the correct (default) category color.
.: Added: Hot tracking effects for Vista themes for all (owner drawn) tab controls.
-----------------------
- May, 12. 2008 -
-----------------------
.: Fixed: Tooltips did not show correctly with Vista Aero theme.

Best P2P along with Azureus. I get a lot of stuff from Kademlia. Be sure to use emulepawcio or some blacklist to protect yourself from AntiP2P, and find a reliable safe server and make it static. To the clown (Qlib) that keeps getting LOW-ID, this is YOUR FAULT. Don't down-rate a program because you don't know how to use port-forwarding or setup an utterly simplistic home router.
njeske reviewed v0.49b Beta 2 on Jul 30, 2008
@Qlib: It may not be eMule, your PC, or your router. It could very well be your ISP messing with P2P packets.
I don't use eMule for much, but it's great for finding some more obscure music files. The decentralized KAD network is great.

Changelog:
.: Made sure to always use the intern UDP port if both (intern and extern) ports succeed in the firewall test
.: Control chars are now filtered out of ed2k-links / received filenames [eklmn]
.: Fixed a small bug with handling removed category directories on startup [tHeWiZaRdOfDoS]
.: Changed installer to set the currently used shared usage setting as default if available
.: Fixed another bug in the new UDP firewalltest, causing it to fail for results on the extern UDP port and for unreachable clients
.: Captchas can consist of numbers now too (except 0)
.: Fixed a smaller issue with finding and connecting to a buddy
.: Buddy search interval has been reduced, to increase the chance to find a buddy without waiting too long
.: Changed the Crypt functions a bit for faster processing [netfinity]

The true meaning of p2p file sharing, Emule is heavily unrecognized by the greedy torrents crowd but stays strong from a very dedicated community, millions of users especially from Asia and steady development. In recent times it has suffered from an server breakdown but due to its serverless mode (KAD) continues relatively unharmed. Due to its file sharing paradigm and overall architecture new users find it awkward to use and complain about slow speeds, the things is the more you use it,the more you stay online and share, the more speed you will get intime, definetly not for the impatient crowd. In return, Emule has some unique content to its vast library found nowhere else. Understand how the network works and you will be amazed by the sophistication. When the p2p final lockdown commences and all the trackers will be closed, the Mule will laugh last at those that ridiculed it. The future of P2P.

@radiomaffia:
1. there are plenty of servers left. nothing has changed.
2. in any case, eMule supports the Kademlia P2P protocol which makes servers unnecessary. i usually get better search results from Kademlia than from a global server search.

eMule development has stopped??
Not at all. A beta version has just been released a few days back so the developers are working on this.
Registered reviewed v0.49a Beta 1 on Apr 15, 2008
excellent program, has huge amount of sources, and many advance options that can be tailored for the advance users,
development has stopped really, but emule extreme has pretty much tacken over, but credit where due, as this team put emule on the map, and now other people can take over the front running, which i have to say is emule extreme for sure,
emule is solid, reliable, and has huge amount of sources for files, patience is needed, but emule uses a credit score system which forces people to give back, and pretty much eliminates leechers,
but the one thing that makes emule so great is it's long lasting files, you can still get files that are well old and yet still being shared.
bit torrent is great for the latest files for sure, but emule's credit score system works brilliantly, the more you share the higher points you get, for people that don't give back will get long downloading times,
and of course emule's search capabilities is brilliant, even without ed2k index sites, one can still do full advance searches for files right in the program itself,
however emule is for advance users, there are at least 30 settings that need to be adjusted, and I.P. filters need to be downloaded to counter act government agency's and companies that try to monitor P2P,
if you don't like setting or doing the research (reading the well in depth manual) then stick to others like bittorrent, as emule is dangerous to use without the settings being adjusted, and getting rid of the many many fake servers that emule connects to that are actually government servers.
emule base program is great and well designed, but like i said development has been slowing down big time, updates are coming about every 6-9 months now, however http://www.xtreme-mod.net/
takes emule to it's furthest potential (but this mod relies heavily on the base code so in actual fact emule being updated with low level bug fixes is still excellent).

This program is Ok. Good for rare files, but thats it. It takes a paramout length of time to download even the most popular files, which you would get much faster even with older p2p apps like kazaa. Using this for really large files (ie dvd images) is pointless, takes ridiculously long to finish such a download.
Other points:
-versioning sucks, 0.X for years now, its confusing, it makes it seem like theres never a major new version
-no solution to ISP bandwidth throttling, not even an attempt at one
-this whole server list thing is too confusing, i usually end up connectiong over and over to different servers to try to get more sources, not really knowing how the thing actually works
-cluttered and somewhat confusing interface
-somewhat high cpu usage when idle

Niksa, no - it's only eDonkey2000 website (and company) shut down. The P2P network itself is independant and continues on it's own.
P.S. And BTW, eMule is pretty fast. Not as fast as torrents, but at least the selection of things is 100s of time larger (though comparing eMule and torrents is incorrect - while eMule has global P2P network, torrents belong to small local networks).

You can not see it yet on emule's account's files-page cos it is not yet uploaded to all sourceforge download-mirrors.
Later when it has been uploaded merkur_emule, ornis or someone else will officially release it on the mainpage.

No because I wouldn't write a program with the expectation that only I am the best at writing it.
Computers also encourage copyright theft. Should we ban those?
Information in all forms should be free. Then we will have honesty and no more wars.

OMG. Morph XT emule rules! I was using eMule plus and the other emule mod mentioned here before!
Prospero424 reviewed v0.47a on Jan 30, 2006
I've tried a lot of mods, but I mostly stick with the Morph XT mod these days. It's always updated very quickly (new version with 47a codebase is already out) and is nice and fast. I wish there was a good site on which to compare mods (in English rather than German).
As for the features being worked on by the eMule team; the mention of Kademlia version 2.0 in the release notes has really piqued my curiosity. A lot of people don't know that Kadamlia also facilitates DHT for Bittorrent, so a new version of Kad is a big deal. I can't wait to see what they've done with it.
There's a lot of things you can say about eMule. Some say it's too slow, some have other complaints, but it is irrefutably a marvel of network-transfer technology.

Mrphatt is right... Some files with not many sources take a long time to download on both my T1 line in LA and on my 3G mobile network. I defnitley hate the "waiting" status which indicates that a file is waiting for sources. Pathetic! But I give eMule a high rating because of the number and quality of files available for download. eMule is a horrible program for music downloads. Unless you're downloading a full album. I recommend BitComet and LimeWire PRO besides eMule to keep your P2P experience optimal

Love this program, been using it a good 2 years now. Unfortuneately, ever since those comcast downtimes last month I haven't been able to run emule for more than 10 minutes without it crashing the cable modem and my connection to the net for all connected devices. I've tried everything I can think of, the problem happens on any machine attached to the cable modem running emule, and of course comcast isn't any help. The problem is 100% repeatable with emule: If I close it I regain my connection. I'm considering getting another cable modem in the hopes it's just a fluke with this one.

"Edk just makes you sit on their network for around a month while the regulars leech off of you .The waiting is the only way your speed goes up . Some users have clients that grant them a first place slot."
Emule blocks those clients, so you don't have to worry about that.
The quality of Emule is really not it's speeds, but it's quality. The program/network has great error protection (whereas programs like kazaa often gave me defective downloads) and it's fair.
You have to wait so long to get reasonable speeds because you need to build credits by uploading. The speeds you want to get must come from somewhere, don't they? I love Emule because it keeps out those #$%//%^$ leechers.

eMule is a great program and it has always worked for me.
I was a long time ed2k user though before eMule came out. But ed2k came with its own share of woes and seemd very...insufficient.
The Kad network especially is what I like about eMule. It has so matured that it actually works better than the ed2k network (atleast, for me).
However, its true that sometimes eMule doesn't work for some people. Maybe its all in the sort of connection you have. Just having a fast cable isn't of any help, for the best performance, you would need a High-ID. Since I'm on dialup, I always have a high-id; so I face no problems using eMule.
The irony is however, I always have problems using BitTorrent which is why I hate BT :)

eMule is bulls**t conspiracy. I've followed all the instructions and read through many help docs and FAQs and yet my downloads are still around 4 kbps average (I have a fast cable connection). I've been using it for at least 2-3 weeks and have left it on overnight following the advice from forum members. There's something not right about none of my downloads every even starting, only to look down at the uploads and see 4 people downloading files from me at 15 kbps each. Other than its extensive library, eMule is complicated, incompetent, and downright terrible.
Domingo reviewed v0.45b on Feb 13, 2005
Maybe my configuration for eMule wasn't set-up right, but I've found the EDonkey2000 client to be a lot more stable, faster, and it pulls more results. eMule *feels* like more of a power-user application, but it just didn't work right for me in comparison. I like the ED2K application and interface better. Either way, it's the best P2P network out there IMO so use whichever client you like!

This is a very good eDonkey client. The best one that I know. If you people out there find that eDonkey network is slow, this is because of stingy people capping their bandwidth to slowmo 14.4K speeds.
I would like to see eMule add in UPnP support. A lot of people do not know how to open ports in their router and end up getting LowIDs.

Definitly the better P2P client out there and proly one of the best protocalls however P2P seems to be a concept that works best in concept then it acctualy does in real world use. As somone elses review said, they have very slow download times most of the time.
BitTorrent is really good as well but has the unfortunite habbit of torrents evently going dead after only a very short time. BT is just not very ideal for file trading like eMule is. BT is outstanding for geting Linux distros when there hot or geting stuff like Windows XP SP2 when it was hot. But The torrents tend to be dead after only a couple weeks so you have to be on the ball and download what you want when everyone else is downloading it for it to work right.
Use emule if yer late geting a hot release and cant any longer get it on BitTorrent. That is if theres not a high speed FTP out and most Linux (what I use emule to download) distors have very fast FTP servers anyway (though they can be boged down whenever a new build is released).
No comment on eMules most common use :)
mjm01010101 reviewed v0.44a on Sep 7, 2004
Wonderful P2P app. Expert interface, great stats reporting. Open source (most important) I've uploaded 200 gigs to date, leaving my connection averaging about 13 Kb up. This doesn't need to compete with bittorrent, as bittorrent isn't so hot for finding older files or the amount of customization you can use to find what you want. (I use both)
Files that are very new and high in demand have extremely fast downloads.

Im just wondering why EDK/eMule are so popular ... damn low speeds and 2-3hours before a Download starts , that isnt great.
Bittorent is better, but it has also low speeds.
Naturally I download with AppleJuice at 30-40kb/s but in the meantime i can save "Credits" (like on some ftps , if you upload 1gb you can download 1gb). If i have enoghth of these credits (if you have something around 25kb/s upload you never got problems with that) i can download as fast as my ISP can handle it :) 1/mbs isnt a problem if it is a popular file , and if only 1 Person has the file it is also no problem (in EDK it is just impossible to load something from less then 10 people with full source) but with the power of the credits you can push yourselfe forward in the Queue :)
SO if i Compare i cant find something positive at EDK/eMule (ok the number of users is alot bigger) but the downloadspeed pure crap ... (3 years in the past edk was nice , but now it lost his glory )
AppleJuice (allOS P2P) , the revolution starts :)

What I took issue with was the "going under" comment.
1. Emule has seen radical changes since the .4X versions with the introduction of support for the Kad protocol. Unsurprisingly this also brought new bugs along. This does not mean emule is "going under" or that QA quality has decreased.
2. All software has crash bugs which, and it is good that they are fixed. This, again, does not mean emule is "going under".
3. I have been running emule 24/7 since the 42c and have not had it crash on me once yet.

Great update, hopefully eMule Plus 1g will come out soon. It uses less RAM and is historically more stable on my computer. eMule original is great too, of course. Hmm, someone needs to update the screen shot, eMule hasn't been ugly like eDonkey for a long time.

One of the more reliable P2P programs. Hardly any corrupt or mis-labeled files.
The only gripe I really have against it is that the method used to get the order of the segment downloads is not the smartest and if a rare file isn't spread quickly enough, it may be impossible to complete. But for any major download, it's simply the best.
Floodland reviewed v0.29b on Jun 24, 2003
Just the best filesharing. Not so big as kazaa maybe but growing damn fast. And smarter than other networks. You share while downloading, and the credit system make that if you don't share, then will download slower. edonkey is from the past, emule the present and I'm sure, the future.
spikeymikey reviewed v0.29b on Jun 23, 2003
I have had very good experiences with this program. I tried eDonkey2000 last year but was turned off because the software wasn't very intuitive and lacked a modern interface. eMule is easy to use, just add the "Best Servers .met", connect to the network, and start searching. Between eMule, KaZaa Lite, and sometimes Shareaza, I have been able to find pretty much everything I've looked for.
Gaffa reviewed v0.29b on Jun 23, 2003
This client works, the network is a little slow, but you get things there, that are hardly available anywhere else.
mufdvr3669 reviewed v0.29b on Jun 23, 2003
This emule works great, the network as a whole takes a little while in getting downloads, but well worth the wait. Emule is fully compliant with the emule network :)
Scorched Earth reviewed v0.29a on Jun 4, 2003
There's a reason why 80% of people on the ed2k use eMule. It's more stable, has better features, looks better, and doesn't have spyware; unlike eDonkey Hybrid. A third party client doesn't overtake a network for no reason.
Practice reviewed v0.29a on Jun 4, 2003
You are the one who has no idea. Overnet was originally created to replace the eDonkey protocol as its successor, but eDonkey had too much momentum so the creator of eDonkey/Overnet made a hybrid version of the client. And it is also true that eMule (and some other clients) do not fully follow the eDonkey protocol guidelines. You can confirm this information at their web site. Although I will say that eMule is much more flexible and feature rich than eDonkey is, but in turn, more complex. So if simplicity is what you’re looking for, eDonkey is the way to go.
QQ reviewed v0.29a on Jun 4, 2003
you have no idea, do you? eDonkey and Overnet are two different protocols, and eMule is fully compatible with eDonkey protocol. And then some.
Kompressor reviewed v0.29a on Jun 4, 2003
Not fully compatible with the eDonkey network.
No Overnet support!

ahh, finally... an update! looks like there's a lot of fixes/additions in this version. if you use emule already, grab it now. if you don't use emule, that's silly. absolutely the best ed2k client out there.

One remark though... Is it just me, or is "ZzDr.Fred" posting in every p2p betapost about how there's virii and leechers on there, and that his program "fileshare" or whatever is better? Looks to me like he's just spamming his p2p on all the ~competitor~ pages.

XF reviewed v0.26b on Feb 10, 2003
Tried many p2p clients & networks and found eMule + ed2k network + sharereactor.com to be the most secure p2p way to d/l even software without having to worry very much about viruses, and leechers. About viruses, if you take a look at sharereactor.com they have listings of lots (lots!!) of files shared on the net with their hashcode, so you're sure what you're going to download even before starting it. About leechers: the ed2k network system doesn't allow it, since downloads and uploads are decided automatically (both on eMule and eDonkey2000) by the client on a time-compared-to-uploaded-data criteria, so you can't decide where to download from and who to upload to...
Just one thing: useful for everything except music: WinMX is still better at it...

Excellent program, by far the best p2p program out, plus frequent improvements, and it is open source.
I have read some of the negative comments on here, and it is pretty obvious that they are a result of lack of knowledge rather than shortcomings in the program. The program is very easy to use, and it only takes a little common sense and at most a tiny bit of reading to get the most out of it.

Because Kessen mentioned some helpfull information, I thought I would add my 2 cents for help as well. Good recommendations Kessen by the way.
I would like to mention that file size consumption can be limited to the amount of ACTUAL DATA DOWNLOADED with one easy step if you are using and O/S like WinXP and NTFS FAT system. Find your temporary files folder. By default this is C:\program files\emule\temp . Right click on the folder and select "properties" from the menu. A menu will come up with a button towards the bottom that says "Advanced...". Click that button and another menu will pop up with some check marks available for checking. Put a check mark in the "Compress contents to save disk space" box(if it asks, you want to attribute the changes to subfolders as well). Make sure you do this while Emule is NOT running, even in background. Doing this while running Emule will not ruin the files, it will just prompt you many times to ignore the file because it is in use and cannot be compressed. What this does is allows the folder to attempt and maintain file compression on that folder. Since the fragments that are not actually downloaded are not there, the folder and hard drive space will show the ACTUAL file comsumtion of those temporary files. Realize however that eventually the files if all left in the que will blow up to the full size of the download, BUT this really helps when you que many of the same items in order to see which files actually download first. Just coincidentally, you could accomplish the same thing by compressing the entire hard drive containing emule, but I dont reccommend compressing the entire hard drive which will be used as C: (or your windows boot hard drive). Since if you have to blow away the hard drive in order to reinstall windows for whatever reason. Windows XP will not install to an already compressed volume (hard drive partition). Causing you to look for another hard drive so you dont lose the precious temp files or other data. Compressing at the folder level is much safer. BTW hard drive performance degredation is very minimal when using NTFS compression.
The other advice, was to those complaining of lowid's in emule. If you are experiencing lowid's, this may not apply to all of you, but it did apply to me, and these changes made the difference between an id in the hundreds of thousands to a consistent id more than 3 or 4 billion. Considered a high id of course. If you are not using a high speed internet connection at all or a firewall program, read no further since this will not help you. I also make no claim to be an expert at this, but I hope this helps. You are probably having trouble because you are using a router for your high speed internet.
You need to configure your router(dont ask me how, each router is a little different) to route the ports 4661 and 4662 in TCP and UDP to the IP address that refers to your computer running emule. Most lowid people get low id's because the 4661 and 4662 ports are not getting through to the emule program. Emule uses these ports to send information on files available and quiries for file downloads. Forward these ports to the ip address of the computer running emule. If you have firewall software running, make sure you allow those ports access to emule application.

Ornis: fixed reset serverlog crash
Unk: Fixed security hole. (beef2k)
Unk: Created a new algorithm to smooth out the spikeing TCP connections. This will help several things..
-Spiking CPU & Bandwidth when many sources are added or reasked.
-Help with conflicts between Source Exchange and UDP file reasks allowing UDP to be used more lowering the need for TCP and overhead.
Unk: Irc: Fixed another bug that could cause a crash when you close a channel.
Unk: Queue size is now adjustable.. (FYI: Contrary to belief, queue size has NOTHING to do with the amount of bandwidth overhead..)
Unk: File buffer size is now adjustable. If you are one of them people that is having problems with the buffer, try lowering it.
Unk: Download file priorities are now usable for rechecking sources.
Unk: Some clients may be reporting completed file status. Did some changes to hopefully stop this.
Unk: Added queue rank of Hybrid eDonkey clients.
Unk: Fixed protocol to allow eMule to stay in the Hybrid's queue.
Unk: Changing IP shouldn't force you to move to the end of the queue anymore.
Unk: Redid sorting of Download list one more time.
Unk: Sources with a full queue is now treated the same as "No Needed Parts".. (means: they will be replaced by other sources when you reach source limit)

Thank you Kessen for explaining stuff. I was just comparing my experince to the past when edonkey was faster (for me, and I miss those times) But I´m sure you´re right. Usually I download the latest episodes of different TV-shows, like Friends and 24. They usually have hundreds of sources, but most of the time I only have one connection that transfer@3-5Kb, sometimes 5 or 6 . Sometimes I do try the very popular files, but theres not much difference. But it´s silly to complain, I know. I always get what I want and it doesn´t cost me anything but computertime, so I really shouldn´t complain (and wont do it again). The main advantage with the network is the sites SR and FN.

this is the best ed2k client out there... and it's open source... there are some even better emule mods out there (emule plus and tarod's mod). if you use the edonkey network, use emule!
Kessen reviewed v0.25b on Jan 29, 2003
@Flemens:
How do you expect to obtain good download speeds on one source when most isp (at least in Europe) limit the upload bandwith at 16kBps (or 128kbps) ? Also you may have tried to download when everybody was using edonkey: emule has a credit system so that good uploaders are rewarded; it also uploads to fewer people, and these people have to wait in the queue longer (the queue size is up to 2000). Finally it really depends on which kind of file you were trying to download: if you download a release, your speed will be at least +500 kBps (or 4Mbps). If this is a rare file, the speed will depend on the source speed obviously. Also watch www.slyck.com : they observe each network, and rank emule very high for every kind of file, especially big files. Beat that ! I think this is 100% deserved as every other p2p softwares are copying the features of edonkey/emule right now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- emule/edonkey have had every feature necessary for a long time: multisourcing, hash links (great so that you won't download fakes, or your downloads won't be infected with a virus), etc... It has been optimised a lot to find sources faster, it is open source (anyone can develop it even if the coders stop, for legal matters or whatever), the forum community is very active to help it evolve quickly. Everything is fine, it needs more users to be unbeatable ! this is the 4th largest p2p network. Ultimately it all depends of the upload speed of every1. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------By the way let me correct my post below: max connections refers to the connections to your client, not to the server. I read you should never have +50 in connections if you have win9x. I have winXP and these settings are fine: 1400 max connections and 1200 max connections per 5 seconds. I put 100 for max sources so that emule is forced to update them more often, and it works great as i download a lot of files at once. But you do need 2 large hard drives ! Emule is the best p2p software at the moment for large files.

The best edonkey client ever :)
Flemens reviewed v0.25a on Jan 16, 2003
The donkeynetwork (aka emule) has gone bad. Nowadays I get modemspeed (0.5 to 15Kb @most) on my 1Mbit cable. 99% of the sources is on que most of the time (I guess morons are capping their upload). But if you have patience you get what you want. A 500Mb-file takes average 2-3 days to get, atleast for me, sad but true. My conspiracymind tells me antipirating guys are jamming the network.
When edonkeynetwork was new I had downloads @ 130Kb most of the time.
Kessen reviewed v0.24a on Dec 24, 2002
From all the p2p softwares I have tried, eMule seems to be the most refined, stable and efficient one. Very simple to use, Nice interface, Tons of stats and options. The modification community (look in the official emule mod forum) is very active, and thus ensure that this software will get updated often. I still have 1 or 2 crashes from time to time, but I am running a distributing processor program (from United Devices, fight against cancer) and there may be an incompatibility between both. Maybe the solution is to run them both in low cpu priority (right click option in windows task manager). Be aware that you will need a lot of drive space: emule reserves the space by creating a file equal to the file lengh you want, when it begins to download. The best solution is to buy 2 nice 200Gb drives and you are set. :o) There is also the problem of low id: you must search sources through servers when you have one low id, sources are erased much quicker, and it slows the network. One solution that may work is to reboot, perhaps this is a bug with the port being 'taken' and not released ? But this may very well be a problem with the edonkey/emule network mod'ed server called 'lugdunum' (16.38.pX). I found one server (with the original edonkey server version 16.38) where I often get a high id, and i can't complain but only praise emule. The emule team has started working on a emule server, so emule is a safe bet for the future. Also pay a visit to sharereactor.com and jigle.com for finding files! Did i mention you can write and read files comment noto download fakes ? About the settings: I advise not to put more than 100 for max connections (not to overcharge the servers with requests), and 120/140 for max sources per file (I found to put 400 is less efficient if you download more than 20 files at the same time). You just have to find the right server for you, and this may be the best p2p software atm.

@oudoulj:
emule is not without disadvantages. it makes the system slower and often breaks my internet connection, although I limited the amount of connections to 250 and am using winXP, which allows more connections, than win98. also low id problems are not history. I am using tarod, which tries to avoid low id, but even with tarod I get low id most of the time. you get low id in 99 percent of all cases with the normal emule.
there's much work to do yet. one star for normal emule, 3 stars for tarod. the developers should stop making useless features, like the irc client built in and concentrate on the bugs I described above

People who cant figure it out are just dumb cause it's really more user friendly than the original eDonkey client et very effective.
Low IDs problems are history I think.
Just make sure you edit the adresses.dat and paste a link such as http://www.edk-files.com/x1/server.met
