Publisher's Description

musikCube is much more than an "mp3 player," it is a music library. It currently supports mp3, ogg, flac, and cd audio file formats. It also features an integrated cd ripper helping you take control of your music from the start. musikCube tries to stay as intuitive and attractive as possible without degrading the performance of your computer. We believe very strongly that your mp3 player should not exist only to be eye candy, but be a functional, cohesive part of your operating system. It is the vanilla audio player for Windows.

This app is fantastic and probably has one of the best UI in the audio player market these days there are a lot of shortcomings in some expected features and bugs that linger on.

The last stable release is almost two years old now. It is really sad that the project entered a stall state in development because if was shaping up to be the best player out there.

I keep coming back to it once in a while but the lack of updates turns me off the project each and every times. :(

Nothing fancy here, except the fact that it's the most efficient player I've seen that's actually usable. I've used it on *very* low end PCs running 2000/XP (it works fine under Vista, too) with tens of gigabytes of songs, no problem. The internal database system is fast fast fast for searching songs. It's also music-oriented (hence the name), unlike other players who try to be video players etc. I don't know how it does with streaming, as I don't use it. I also don't know how well it rips CDs, as I use WMP or Audiograbber (another classic) for that purpose.

The downside is that development of Musikcube seems slow - although I'm unsure myself what to do with such a good piece of software.

One annoying bug I've found is that on a few setups (XP with Windowblinds, Vista), sometimes I can't see the scroll bar and volume control. I'm pretty sure this is a compiler problem, though.

Powerful, unpretentious, relatively small memory footprint, fast scanning of large folders of music.

Only down side is that it comes with no build in urls to net radio/podcasts in the library, but thats not enough to knock it down to 4/5.

This is probably the best music program out right now. I've never been a fan of WinAmp, and WMP11 is too much of a resource hog. I liked FooBar, but MusikCube does a better job with playlists. Plus it has the addition of Dynamic Playlists, which are actually quite useful for playing the music in your library that you're in the mood for.

Well, I wasn't sure if I should say a word about this proggy, but after noticed:
+ The resource usage: unnoticed memory and cpu footprint! I was really impressed, these days is common for all players to use alt least 20MB but this one never crossed 8MB (takes only 2MB when minimized).
+ clean an (kind of) classic interface, no skins and other bloated stuff
+ clean accessible options.

… I've said to myself that it deserves at least a good review.

The download fails on me (only half of the files were downloaded), therefore I've took it from another source:

Good job!

May I start by saying that this could be a false positive.

I have just rediscovered MusikCube and promptly installed it onto my system. During the installation I became concerned when I received a trojan.Win32.Codec1 warning from my anti-virus software (Comodo), not only once but twice. There was also a second warning saying MusikCube was attempting to hook into a low level area, sorry but I couldn't get the details about this. I have conducted a search on the net for this "Trojan" but can't find anything. I have placed a bug report on MusikCube's site so they can have a look at it. With luck it will be quickly resolved as this is an excellent program. The low rate reflects this "problem".

I will be keeping my eye on future releases, but for now I will still use (pre-Shareware) version of TrayPlayer but since it hasn't been updated in over a year I'm look'n. I like toolbar style players. Winamp has a plug, but winamp in general is becoming bloat (even with modern skins not installed). I nearly converted to this player; however, I like global hotkeys to include the winkey as an allowed keystroke combo which is currently doesn't support.

I have used Winamp and iTunes. For me, a user who needs a highly configurable player with easy access to all songs and playlists, this is better than both.

Great interface, great compatibility. For those of us iPod users, there is no Apple Lossless (ALAC) support yet. They're working on it. Nonetheless, it plays all the other files off my iPod and HD better than iTunes or Winamp does.

Uses up 4 MB of RAM when it's open and playing, and less RAM when it's minimized. I'm hooked.

pgrashof reviewed v1.0 RC2 on Apr 18, 2006

This program is awesome for playing and searching in a large MP3 collection. I actually dropped Winamp for this player. It starts up amazingly fast. It builds a database of your MP3s and its most important tags. Search for music by partially typing the name of the artist or album, or if you want, a partial name of the song. Then you can play the file instantly.
I have tried Mediamonkey in the past, but its main problem was that it didn't work that well with updates on files and tags that were made outside the program, even with its filemonitor activated. This program rescans your MP3 collection in no time without too much CPU usage or memory overhead.
Yes, it still is a release candidate, and yes, it has a few bugs. But even with its shortcomings, this is the best mp3 manager in years!

Great program, I have been using musikcube for almost a year now and I really like it. The music library is fast and responsive. The alternating colors are easy on the eyes and the support for several formats helps people with diverse collection of music. Oh reguarding the 3 review earlier. I think 6-7 megs installed on your computer is pretty good. Foobar maybe uses a little less but just remember that for the same functionality foobar uses at least 5 times the systems resources just to run. The only weakness that i've found in musikcube is the small community that follows the program. Musikcube needs a 1.0 final release and several more plugins to become a competitive program(better radio support). I don't think alot of power features will not be included into musikcube because the goal of the project is a player that is easy on system resources. Though overall the best program for my needs.

"If CD cover display is added I might use this as my primary player."

I fell the same.

JEdwardP

JEdwardP reviewed v1.0 RC2 on Oct 26, 2005

This project has developed well since the last time I took a look at it. It now supports all but one of the formats I need via plug-in (Speex).

But, it's TWICE the size of foobar (installed), even before adding any format plug-ins, and it's focus still seems to be on being an organizer more than a player.

If I needed or wanted an organizer/library, I'd give this strong consideration, but I don't, and never will, simply because I've set up my directory structure itself to organize my music.

All in all, though, this is a good project for those who feel they need a music library, or insist on open-source (and therefore don't use foobar)

Not the prettiest, but easily the best music player I've ever come across. The interface is simple and intuitive, and playback quality is outstanding. It's OSS, so plug-ins are varied and easy to find, and there's plenty of documentation. If you maintain your ID3 tags, you couldn't ask for a better MP3 player.

I know this program is still improving, but I give it a 5 anyway for it's speedy progress. A great piece of software driven by a great community and an extremely responsive creater (casey). Musikcube has totally replaced Winamp and my feeble attempts to configure Foobar the way I want it. It may not have all the bells and whistles that Foobar enjoys right now, but it will. Try it out and see for yourself.

netwiz562

netwiz562 reviewed v0.92.4 on May 25, 2005

There is a plugin available on the website to import/export playlist files.

This is not included in the software because musikCube is trying to avoid just bending to be compatible with everything. musikCube is trying to innovate, and text based playlists are not seen as a good way to handle playlists in the future.

bangbang023

bangbang023 reviewed v0.92.4 on May 24, 2005

It's an app heading in the right direction. However, for guys like me, the lack of support for m3u playlists created in other players is a nail in the coffin. Sometimes, I want to listen to my music in the exact way I have it ordered. There is no way I'm recreating a playlist of 1200+ songs. It gets a 4, for now.

opita

opita reviewed v0.92.3 Beta on May 23, 2005

The best player i've seen in some time.
Low on resources and got some nice features like music syncronization and dynamic playlists.
Heck it even has a plugin for messenger 7 (current music playing).
It has everything i want and need.
If you can't find support for a certain format check the plugins, if not there probably will be soon.
Beats winamp in my book.
There are definetly things that it needs, but i'm sure it will get it in time and they are not that necessary.

Yes :) thing is, I don't believe in namings and talks, I tried the stuff and while it isn't anything near bad, in fact it's quite good, there are some things that needs to be told (don't believe me, try):
- wxmusik is similar but better because it's crossplatform,
- foobar is better than both: ease of use, tabbed lists, db integration, sound quality, and I could go on

"minus the extra crap you never ever use. "

That is, YOU never use. Last time I checked (10 seconds ago) Foobar's feature set was anything but bloated.

Best nonskinned audio player. Took only 1840K memory in my system. Better than Foobar2000. Waiting for tree view plugin. Try it. ;)

I downloaded and tried musikCube today and it truly is a great program.

I love the playlist handling and the interface is really nice too. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is the slightly inferior sound quality.

If it could sound as good as foobar2000 (my audio player of choice) I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Fantastic!!
Seems like the perfect combination between iTunes and FooBar2000. I think it may even replace foobar on my system...lets hope it get the plugin makers going like they did with foobar!
One thing, I really wish that ctrl-f opened the search dialog!!
Keep it up :)

Wow! This program is exactly what I've been looking for! A decent replacement to winamp, with an active development, and well organised library which you actually live out of (no need to use the "now playing" list that much). Simple things such as balloon tips on changing tracks is magical. Just two complaints (neither of which take away a star from the rating).

First: proxy support so I can stream and stop using winamp.

Second: Make the mouse wheel scroll the portion of the window that is under the mouse and not the one I click in last.

This is a great music player, an excellent alternative to winamp, etc. It's insanely light on resources, and the development is moving very quickly. There's still a lot of work to be done, but even in its current incarnation, it's an excellent player if you are one of those guys who just wants to listen to music, instead of taking hours to set up your player (a la foobar).

This is a must for users who have a large music collection. Excellent interface, great features to keep your collection organised (great retaging functions, powerfull dynamic playlists).
The developper responds quickly to user requests and bugfixes. Still in beta but works great and keeps getting better and better with each release. Keep your eyes open, new releases popup regularly.
Oh, almost forgot: it's lighweight on your system. 5mb of RAM used when playing with a 10000 song library.

I've been searching for months for an easy-to-use organizer/player for my flac collection (~12K songs). Although still beta, MusikCube is rock solid and the functionality beats everything else I've tried (winamp, foobar, MediaMonkey, dbPoweramp and more). Of course, I hate skins and weird colors swirling on my screen; I just want to play music. I love the dynamic playlists.
The developers are very responsive to bug reports.

I'm very much a minimalist when it comes to system resource usage. I like this program for that reason. It is very easy to navigate, it's still easy on the eyes and does just what it says. WMP10 is actually pretty good, but this is good for those of us that are CPU intensive. Good Prog.

Well this is definetly the best music player/organizer I have come across. Low memory usage which is great for people who demand every bit of their processing power and ram while still wishing to music lag free. The organizational abilities of this program are unsurpassed by any other program. I'm not too sure what the guy before me means burner error... there isn't a burner yet.

Jstphish

Jstphish reviewed v0.91.9 Beta on Jan 24, 2005

A good alternative to iTunes for those who don't like Apple's DRM.

However, it is way too much like iTunes ... the interface is organized almost the same way ... except it doesn't have super fast searching and looks like you're running Win98 (I don't have a problem with that, just an observation). Personally it looks like an alpha version of iTunes to me.

It gets a three for not being creative and for the CD burning bug.

Love this, works fine for me. Only gripe with it that I can possibly think of (and I'm nitpicking here) is that I can't tweak the sound to get what I did with Winamp... however, it's only been on my computer for a short while (hardly as long as WA2) so I guess I'll figure that out soon enough.

to agildehaus,

how exactly is this like iTunes? it plays music? it has a library interface? it has ratings?

iTunes is a resource hog that is practically a requirement for your iPod. Musikcube is an all-purpose music player that reads OGG (iTunes doesnt), and is very lightweight and quick.

agildehaus

agildehaus reviewed v0.91.7 on Jan 12, 2005

It's nice, but it's far too much like iTunes for me to give it a good rating. I expect an app to at least try to differentiate itself, but this one doesn't. Let iTunes be iTunes, musikCube should at least TRY to look different.

I do appreciate the adoption of free file formats and encoders. It's nice that OGG is the default and FLAC is offered as an alternative. Would be nice if Monkey's Audio and AAC (through faac) were offered as well.

Ripping CDs, at least in this version, is a pain. I was unable to rip any CD after querying its title information through freedb. I get a message "The disc currently inserted does not match the list of tracks above. To correct this error, please press the 'rescan' button." After hitting Rescan, it works, but I have no title information and all my tracks are labeled "track number ___". Quite a showstopper bug.

Without a doubt my favorite music player. Has surpassed WinAmp, QCD, Foobar2000, XMPlay, and MusicMatch (which was never really on the list, but I thought I would include it just to be thorough). Awesome feastures, very ituitiive interface, fast start and stop.

Close to perfect. 6 stars.

I haven't even tried it--and won't for the time being, since I use Monkey's Audio files exclusively, which Cube doesn't support--but this quote from the home page forces me to rate it highly:

"Cube will NEVER support skins, so please don't even ask."

Being the World's Foremost Hater of Skins, I can really appreciate that.

absolutely great music player that has become my favorite over both iTunes and WMP. low on the resources, intuitive and great user interface.

the only thing it needs? portable audio device support. then it'll get the 5th star.

This program will be the easiest software for playing digital music when completes developing.

The interesting thing is, it makes id tagging so simple that, forced a lazy man like me to change tags to organize music files.

Equalizer quality is not perfect but i'm sure it will be improved. File type support can be extended for wma and mpc. This would be great.

Well done guys!

(I also posted this review on musikCube's site)

This has to be the single best program I have ever used (yes better than winamp). This program makes winamp look like a pile of trash. I love your new ripping ability and how you can edit the artists individually for each track as well as applying the same artist to all of the tracks. That feature helps a lot with burned discs. Sound is great. Another thing I find great is the small size of the program. With my browser consuming over 100,000 kbs of my memory and 70% of my cpu this fits nicely in the little memory I have left. There is so many features of this program I am failing to mention. You just have to see it for yourself if you haven't downloaded it. The equalizer's 16 bands is extremely impressive (there is a 6 band option too). I almost forgot to mention this program's ability to organize your music. This programs ability to organize your music is unbelievable and it does not go laggy on you like winamp after 20 gbs of music is put in winamp's music storage.

All and all this is my favorite program hands down. If you are skeptical about it just try it and you will see I was not kidding.

tristan202, free up some memory or reinstall windows because I have added a lot more than that without a problem in the world.

Cube is very good at organising MP3's, but thats it, I would have been twice as happy if it supported WMA because thats what I use (I convert my MP3's to WMA to put on my MuVo) and unfortunately my WMP install doesnt want to edit tags properly :-(

Very good software, iof you have an MP3 collection it is definately worth trying, it is a very focused piece of software with a very well designed interface.

tristan202

tristan202 reviewed v0.75 Beta 1 on Sep 17, 2004

Wouldn't recommend this piece of software to anyone with a mp3 collection larger than a few hundred tracks. The player crashed every single time I tried to add more than 500tracks at a time. Needs a lot of development yet. Couldn't even get it to handle more than 1000 tracks. It's got a long way before it can handle my 23000 mp3's.

When I saw Windows NT/XP only my first though was YAY UNICODE. Guess I was wrong about that. Anyways, something like a database/file management I think should always support unicode. Whats the use if it doesn't work with the files. But, otherwise seems to be a nice program. Can't really test it since it doesn't work with my files though ;) But, I don't think programs should be rated in relation to others. So a free 5 to "bump" it even higher :P

Well, I just downloaded this program and I was really impressed. See, I needed something more than winamp. I needed something that I could take my mp3 collection and help organize and retag a lot of files all at once. I came across this program. So, I gave it a shot. I am quite impressed. It has a lot of nice features in it like batch retaging and a nice cross-fader. It's stable and it looks nice. It doesn't have fruity looking skins like other players do. Musik is a professional looking program and I can't wait to see what's in store for it in the future. If you want a good and extremely powerful player use musik.

Response to allsiante

I have tried Foobar. It’s pretty bad. First they have really bad navigation, which good navigation helps when you want to batch tag albums. There are no tabs for the organization (track number, rating, title, etc.) you actually have to go up to playlist and go to sort by…that is just a bad setup. Musikcube’s interface lets me retag everything in a few seconds. It’s easy and powerful. And it’s not obtrusive like Foobar. In Foobar all the text is grouped together and just looks bad. It’s hard to see what is going on. I can actually tell what’s going on in Musik cause it separates everything out nicely. And some other cool features is that you can make dynamic playlists and sub libraries. That’s incredibly useful. Foobar just lacks a lot of things for my liking. I would use winamp over Foobar and that says a lot.
