Four out of five because 4NT is not Take Command. Excellent replacement for the default command shell. Highly recommended (Take Command even moreso) if you often find yourself performing command line administration.

T3chDad - You win the clueless award hands down. Some sourceforge project adds multiple tabs, transparency, and the ability to select/copy to cmd and it's the 4NT show-stopper? Stop typing, you're embarrassing yourself. $70.00 is cheap for something this good and useful. Using it allows so many possibilities that cmd never could come close to. It makes life easier when running admin scripts, etc. I wish all apps were this well done and documented.

Dougau: It will work with Vista.Back in the day of DOS, it was the first shareware I bought. 4DOS is now a freebie - but except for Virtual Machines nobody uses it now. There used to be a version called 4OS2. I have only used !% of its commands (does Powershell have built in FTP for example?) but if I have a few hours to spare I might master 2% of its capabilities.

I've been using 4NT since 1989 (back when it was just 4DOS). If you are working with MS operating systems and want a superset of the traditional command prompt, but with the level of functionality you can get with the various Unix shells, then 4NT is perfect. It's a little pricey, but a product doesn't survive for almost 20 years in this industry unless it's actually worth something (or its creator is a monopoly).

Been using 4DOS and 4NT since the old days, always loved it. I moved to Linux a few years ago, so only get a chance to use 4nt on rare occasions.
While Linux has other, more powerful shells, I still miss some 4nt features (like the popups for history and the select command, for instance).

I've used 4DOS, 4NT and TakeCommand from the early days - even got an old employer to buy a site license for our development group because of the benefits/time savings it allowed.
Great programs - however, like others, it's high upgrade price eventually deterred me from sticking with it. Still haven't found a comparable "SELECT" command for cmd.exe. Miss that and it's powerful aliases.
dhry - instead of trolling, why not try managing multiple PCs or doing other serious work with a GUI. Gets a bit tedious. GUIs are great tools too, but have their limits. Command-line interpreters are powerful tools in many situations and those that understand that appreciate them.
It's the hubris of youth - that you are "obviously superior" merely by going with the style du jour - that will only earn you scorn and dismissal by older, more experienced people in this forum and elsewhere. And think - you too will have to face someone who's "new idea" makes your GUI "obsolete". Be smart - know your tools, use them appropriately, and treat others with respect.

Ppl who call this app old and outdated and no better than cmd.exe are typing blind. Totally ignorant what it can do for you if you've the need for it. 4NT is a dream to use for setting up advanced admin scripts, etc. But it IS a bit overpriced.

I have been with 4DOS since version 4.0, 4OS2 from 1.1 and 4NT from 2.5. I still use them quite heavily.
Like many of the proggies that came through OS/2, there are lots of interesting extras. 4NT for example, supports REXX commands, and also the wonderful EXTPROC (ie the OS/2 verion of unix /#).
It is meant to be compatible with command.com and cmd.exe, and apes many of their bugs as well. On the other hand, it is meant to add lots of usable functionality, replacing a horde of utilities in a neat compatible package.
Note that the windows command line is no more DOS than the windows shell is. cmd.exe is a win32 proggie, complete with registry access etc. It is not "DOS" by any means.

Sorry folks, but DOS is DEAD. If you want a command line, run Linux.
Edit: Okay, for those of you who completely aren't following. When you read the word "DOS" above, please consider that what I am actually referring to is the concept of typing commands next to a greater-than sign. I'll rephrase. "Typing commands next to a greater-than sign is DEAD. If you want to type commands next to a greater-than sign, run Linux."

I've been using 4DOS/4NT since the 1.0.
I last bought 4NT v4.00a.
Since then the list of updates and the very high upgrade price gave me very little reason to pay for an upgrade. (Plus, I rarely use Windows now days, making it less useful to me.)
Good to see that 4NT is alive, though...
