Publisher's Description

ActiveSMART allows you to monitor the S.M.A.R.T. parameters of your hard disk to detect fault conditions. It uses special algorithms to predict the date of a possible drive fail. It also gives you full information about your hard disk. Various monitoring modes and alerting options are available. The built in messaging features allow for system administrators to be notified of impending hard disk failure on any machine on the network.

Does not detect a common WD external USB disk which has been detected by all the disk report programs I have used. Reports "bad health" in the internal disk, but the SMART parameters are all OK. It does mot explain what the problems are.

it does what is supose to do, it monitors "Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology", read about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T
it also reads temperature and gives you a option to send alerts via email/network/popup/sound
v2.6 has a major face lift, i wish they put a summary of all hds in system right when you open, like they did with v2.4 , but i asume thats coming soon, its FAR more stable than HDDlife and supports Vista x64, a big plus

PS: if you cant see you harddrives with ActiveSMART, you dont have S.M.A.R.T supported SATA/PATA Controller, i have one disk on a Silicon Image Sil3132 PCIe controller and it wont see that, but my 4 disks on a ATI SB600 SATA controller works fine with ActiveSMART, this isnt ActiveSMART's fault its the sata/pata controller manufacturer that dont support it (silicon image) in my case

all in all, ActiveSMART is worth every penny

Yes, today's drives are more reliable than in the past. But they still fail.

You don't need to monitor a drive for two years to obtain a TEC forecast. In fact, you don't want to include that much data when doing TEC forecasting, because the more old, stable data you include, the less impact new, declining data has--and that's the data that signifies impending drive failure.

I have been a long time user of Active SMART- and way back then this was the only program of its kind. However, drives today are more reliable than earlier drives. And I heard that to predict an accurate Neatest TEC date, you should have monitored your drives for atleast 2 years!!

If you regularly maintain your drives then this software really isn't that useful (Except for temperature).

However, its extremly useful for drives in a bad shape that may fail anytime.

It's also useful if you want to know the impact a particular action had on your drive - for eg, if you quickly power-off/poweron, or improper shutdown, or even fragmentation- you can see the possible effects to your drive- this way you can actually find out your drives quality.

For nomal home users though, this software is definately not worth purchasing.

It's a really great piece of software a well worth the money, in a class of it's own compared with other products I've looked at.

Hey cyberia, maybe you shouldnt comment on something you havent used. Active SMART Monitor is NOTHING compared to Active SMART. Active SMART monitors many more SMART attributes AND it FAR MORE STABLE. I dont know the 2 apps look so much alike, but I can tell you that Active SMART is the real deal. Active SMART Monitor is garbage.
