Alliance is a private and secure place to share files and communicate with people you know. It is easy to use and free. Technically Alliance takes the best parts of BitTorrent (advanced multi-source downloading), DirectConnect (community) and WASTE (security). With Alliance users create their own networks. You can either start a new network or get invited into an existing network by another Alliance user.

Sorry, I still haven't tested it yet, but the review is meant to the idea. Alliance ... needs 'friends' - well, nice. BUT one question: Who tells you, that there is no 'friend' of someone, who gets it's money by passing some information to RIAA??? Who does know everyone REALLY that good to avoid such a case? Everyone of us should be realistic enough to know, that security simply can be reached by an anonymousing software. A good concept, but not further developed, was MUTE.
No matter, what someone tells me about 'security' - as long as someone out there is able to see my IP and is able to identify me while uploading files, this is < u n s e c u r e > for me and I refuse to use it - DOT. Free files easily can be shared using Torrents (with or without Tracker), Gnutella, Mule,... and in the 'special ones' ... I'm not interested.
Therefore a low rating for a stone old idea - sorry.

This program is now at version 1.06, and is still being actively developed.
I chose this as a successor to WASTE on my home server because that project has been abandoned, and I was looking for modern features like BitTorrent-style downloads. The stable version of Alliance (higher levels of encryption are an unstable option) is not quite as secure as WASTE is/was (yet; it's being worked on), but it's secure enough for 99% of people out there.
Retroshare is great and uses better encryption by default, but it lacks BitTorrent-style downloads and "has problems" with files over 2GB. The latter, in particular, is not acceptable for my needs.
The secure invite model is much simpler than WASTE was (though not quite as secure as privately exchanging public keys). You send a friend an alphanumeric code that's only valid for one use, and it connects them to you. There's no messing with IP addresses or manual key exchanges.
Common chat, private chat, share browsing, link sending, nominally-configurable network settings, multi-platform support, relatively clean (if not perfect) interface; it's all here.
Fantastic free software.
