Don't listen to some of the Petty review of this product. But do understand this product is for people who know what they are doing.

John Amalfie: You rate it two out of ten because you won't be able to partition your hard drive after installation? This is ridiculous. Of course a program which writes to your boot sector and encryts your entire HD and file system may have problems with partitioning software trying to mess around with your hard drive! Geez and yes this is the sort of software where anyone considering using it should read all the documentation extensively beforehand.

ZenWarrior: I find your review highly suspect. I have installed this on 4 different PC's and i have had no trouble with the key. More likely you messed something up. Of course without the key you can't access your hard drive, it wouldn't be secure it you could!

"I found my computer no longer worked as it did. There were problems galore." Easy to say yet you dont offer any specifics. I have used this program quite a lot and have noticed no problems. Without specifics I am quite skeptical of your comments.

It is free software so you can't expect massive amounts of support. Encrypting ones hard drive from boot level is a bit of risky venture, almost like updating a BIOS. A person should backup (encrypted) important files because if the power or something goes at a critical phase its likely bye bye files. Encrypting ones hard drive shouldn't be taken lightly, its not like installing a browser extension or something.

It possible you recieved rude responses from the developer, but without detailed information on both sides of the story I am not going to form an opinion of them based on your individual assertions.

As for "anomoly" rating this program 1 out of ten (and calling it "garbage") because this program is for IDE hard drives and doesn't support his config, how petty and egocentric. They have to write low level drivers to make this work, and just because a program that is actively evolving doesn't currently support a specific hardware configuration is no reason to give it a 1 as a program. Go have a tantrum.

This is a powerful and very useful program. I am not aware of any other free software which currently does what this program offers. What this program offers is important.

I have had no trouble with Compusec whatsoever. Obviously encrypting ones entire hard drive implies a certain amount of risk and should not be undertaken by the naive but I have not witnessed any stability issues with this program and once installed its quite transparent and fairly light with resources.

If you know what you are doing, don't be put off by the petty reviews some of some others have posted in here, even if you 100% accepted all of their assertions as truth, giving it a 1/5 is over the top. I gave it 5/10 because I can't give it 4.5.

Watch out for this note near the bottom of the Web page:
"Upon installation of Free CompuSec®, you should not use any hard disk partitioning software on your PC. Failure to do so will result in a
non-bootable PC as Free CompuSec® loader might be altered."
That makes it useless for me.

Use at your own risk! I tried CompuSec only to have it all-but-completely hose my system. I should have known more problems would follow when it would not create the back-up key that was supposed to have been generated. (And without it, losing the only key one would then have would present quite the problem, to put it mildly.)

After installation, I found my computer no longer worked as it did. There were problems galore. Looking to do no more damage and receive help from those who should know their software best, and not having that crucial back-up key, I contacted the developer for advice. I received absolutely no help whatsoever.

In fact, he was downright rude. He refused to even listen to any problems I thought were a result of CompuSec. I was called names and told any future business from me would be refused. (Yes, seriously. I have the e-mails. They're the kind one keeps!)

I'm certain CompuSec works for some, if not most, others. However, I'll certainly not ever risk it again. It took over a week of tinkering to restore my system to its fully working pre-CompuSec installation state.

I can almost forgive the technical problems, but I cannot at all forgive the utter rudeness and complete lack of concern shown by the developer when his software [undoubtedly!] created problems [for me].

My two-bit advice: User beware. CompuSec turned out to be one of the most expensive pieces of "free" software I've ever used. (YMMV)
