Publisher's Description
Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux.
Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 18733 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.

Linux Mint Debian Edition + Mate is amazing. Think of it as Ubuntu at its best, around version 10.10, but essentially a rolling distro that you never have to do a full upgrade on ever again. Plus its extremely fast, low on system resources, stable/reliable and secure. Trust me LMDE is the one, ditch Ubuntu right now and never look back.

after long pause want started testing again, want download from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/ but folder not accesible, incredible,
after trying registration on debian forum some minutes ago for asking download link for latest dev packages for testing, but reg into forum not working, always resend the reg and at last , too many trying.
from what?
i dont believe after 2 years this happened.
dbian was the most organised linux.

Debian 5.0.4
After running livecd ask root password, but no documentation.
Totally unnnessesery project.
Not working, not do anything.
Shame for programmes.
Today released Debian 6 Squeeze
After runnung livecd dont ask password and go to main screen, choose live or some install. Choose livecd, that running fine, booted to main screen eg KDE. After running File manager, dont access to ntfs disks just jump back cursor to home folder. Unbelievable.
Try connect network cable, nothing happened, again try, again nothing.
Open web browser, not working, no internet.
Restart, livecd out, start win7, access to disks, put net, working, browse web working. Working everything.
I tested all linux (hundreds cd hills, thousends), bsd, beos, some other clones for leave win forever, but last 15 years never worked any linuxes, not useable. Every day waiting the day, the linux or some other OS that forget win forever.
That is what I write, nut just not me dont working, nowhere dont access to ntfs and nowhere get internet if you connect net cable.
Before 2000 linux gurus lauging on me why use windows instead free opensource and much better OS like Red Hat.
No gaming, no multimedia, no softwares, no drivers.
All cd tested, and some working, eg freebsd 6 but 7 and 8 not.
When access debian for ntfs and internet, howmany time waiting for?
I know debian is the best linux but if the best not access to disks and net, where is the future?

Well Debian is in his ages. I still prefer another the Dinosaur Slackware :)
Ian have made a good job and his adopted dchildren and grandchildren doing it too.
Positive about Debian 5 is, that this release now support proprietary drivers (ATI & NVIDIA) out of the box.
There are not so many Linux Distrobutions how put stability over stupidity. Debian is one of the most stable Linux Distrobutions.
If you like the latest applications and prefer several system crashes, then don't use Debian. Take SIDUX (based on Debian SID unstable tree) and be happy to format your Box one's a month.
I rated 4 because of some missing Hardware support features for newer Hardware. The 64bit Kernel is not made for Intel i7 CPU's.

Debian is the Daddy.
There are so many distros based on it (Ubuntu for example). There is one reason for that. It's solid, stable, feature packed (3 DVDs option!!) and well supported.
All other linux distros are niche distros, as in they differentiate themselves with a neat trick or a strange quirk (e.g. a Multimedia distro, or in some you have to build everything from source for "perfomance", some concentrate on eye candy, others concentrate on being servers). Debian is everything.

I really think that Debian and it's derivatives are the future of mainstream desktop Linux. I'm not rating this 5 out of 5 because it's popular or because I personally think it's the future. It completely deserves the rating on it's own merits and that is why it's been a success.
Now if only KDE could pull ahead of Gnome and gain a following outside of those who are already tech oriented, perhaps then we'd see things progress a little quicker.

Debian is the premier linux operating system.
It has grandchildren and great grandchildren. Some of these are Ubuntu, Mepis, Sidux, Kanotix, Mint, Dreamlinux, Elive, and Linspire. I'm only naming a few of the most popular - there are many more.
No other linux operating system approaches Debian in available software.
Debian pioneered the popular and indispensible tools called apt-get and synaptic. These tools make upgrades and software management a breeze.
