Publisher's Description

Among the first of things when Windows 7 launched, users needed a stable program which can quickly change the folder icons and restore them back to the original state in one click. Folderico is a one-stop solution for all the folder icon changing needs.

5/5 for the program itself but points off for availability. The software author uses a Russian one-click download site (like Rapidshare but in Cyrillic?) to host the installer rather than something standard (and free) like Google Code or even MediaFire. Difficult to find the old-school version for XP otherwise (which is a separate program from the newer version 4 for Vista+).

I love this app, and have dozens of icons that I've collected over the years, everything from OSX folders to Linux folders to old-school "classic" Mac folders from OS 9 and below. :) After a reinstall of my XP system I wanted to re-download Folderico once more, but have a few qualms about the simplest (and safest) way of acquiring it. (My AV program actually deleted the .rar file from the desktop and put it in quarantine. Somehow I'm more than a little queasy about downloading anything from a DDL hoster with tons of banner ads and a PayPal "donation" request written in Cyrillic. Call me paranoid but I'm still on guard after the Conficker scare about a year ago.)

Alll of this is no indictment of Folderico, though. Folderico itself works great, and isn't intrusive at all; it doesn't change anything about your system, like patching .dll files or messing with the registry -- it just puts a little ~1KB .ini file in the root of the customized folder, and uses only a simple interface or an easily accessible shell menu for the icon sets. Unfortunately, it's not easy to come by (at least for XP) and the newer version requires jumping through some annoying hoops just to gain access to a download of this fine app.

So 3/5 for the scattershot distribution model; maybe Google Code is blocked in the author's country or something (I think...Albania?), and he can't afford a web-host, making Folderico one of those easy to find, but hard to get, apps that deserve more attention for how they "just work." Style XP and the Stardock suites be damned. Some benevolent comrade should distribute a little wealth to the software author and help him pay a few rubles for a decent hosting package of his own. :-)

EDIT: I was just now able to locate Folderico XP edition on the author's Google Sites mirror. 4/5 as I think the download link on the homepage should redirect there rather than to the Russian DDL hoster. (Still 5/5 for Folderico itself.) :-D

Would be great, but please, PLEASE make the menu work in Win7 x64. It is so important, when x64 finally outsells x86 Windows.
