Not only this is based on patented stuff.
(It includes ECMA + other .NET stuff)
It's also a replica of something that has it's home on that platform.

They are trying to get developers use Windows to write cross platform.
To make certain it only/mostly/has the most certainty to work on Windows.

Developers, please don't use this .NET/MONO crap. MS can pull the plug any time. Do you research and invest in real cross-platform and free(dom) toolkits, API's, tools. Such as Python, Java, C/C++. Not in .NET clones/wannabe's. Do your research and discover how ugly the area is marked and bordered with .NET. (The flies are you, developers, not the users per se)

Get of your a** and do some trouble for not getting spanked, sued, trapped, abused. There is a reason for those ratings and it's more than high horses. I can assure you.

Fantastic. Has done wonderful things in the community. Viva la Open Source as well :)

I pity the people who are giving this 1 star ratings due to the fact it uses .NET... get off your high horse and learn something. Ignorance is NOT bliss...

Mono is targetting cross-platformness. So... what needs to be explained here...?

Here's an example of a sucessfull large enterprise-grade project that uses Mono:

Would it be better to write an Development Environment for Linux rather than writing Mono for Windows ? Sorry but I don't get the idea of Mono on Windows.

Very disappointing, but should have been expected from a too-many-dependencies software. Compared with the Microsoft .NET, Mono is twice as large, more memory hungry, more time to load (due to dependencies), and more slower too - although you might not notice it. Unless one only works in Windows environment, there is no need to even try it out.

Requires .Net Framework.

Still no logical reason to use it on Windows. If you're developing for a Linux environment, just launch Linux in a VM and test in the REAL environment. You're not going to accomplish a REAL test in Windows for an app that's targeted for Linux. That's just common sense. For Windows development just use the .NET framework, it's also FREE. I fail to see any reason for using Mono on Windows.

The point of using Mono on Windows is that you can do the coding and testing in user-frendly environment (Windows) and then deploy your web application on budget-friendly environment (Linux Server), using exactly the same development framework.

So why using MONO instead of MIcrosoft .NET on windows?

None, if your not a developer, but as a developer, THIS is a nice way for testing if your code runs with MONO.

I understand the existance of Mono for Linux, or OSX but Windows?
What's the point of using it when the real thing (.net) is available and already installed!

If this project does everything that it claims to then its future is very bright.

Excellent stuff for developing cross platform apps. And crossplatform is getting very important with quickly increasing Linux userbase.
