RSSOwl is a free RSS and RDF newsreader written in Java using SWT as graphic library. RSS ("Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary") is a document specification that gives users the power to collect and organize Web-based news and information in a more efficient manner. Applications that collect data from RSS-compliant sites are called RSS readers or "aggregators". It is such an application. It lets you gather, organize, update, and store information from any compliant source in a convenient, easy to use interface, save selected information in various formats for offline viewing and sharing, and much more.

Great ap though I prefer makagiga at this point as it is truly portable & uses java too and doesn't leave a trace that I can see.

Fixed and working BUT half the feeds that it imported from nfreader's opml WON"T DISPLAY and because it's java leaves a folder on your cdrive zip or no

Exported my feeds from nfreader in opml format, imported into the zip version of this, and this program did NOTHING. red x's is all I got.
btw I had to disable my fw as after telling rssowl that it could not do a dns check it failed to open. Then of course it did absolutely nothing but import the feeds without ever grabbing anything at all.

Excellent program. It as Search folders, or Filters, or Saved Search, something rare and precious at the same time! Google don't have this amazing tool :-) And over all that, it as the possible of using Labels... Same as Tags! A Must.

The guy who said RSS owl doesn't hold a candle to Omea Reader is probably high.

Better than FeedDemon in my opinion. Less memory, works offline, font size and style is more accessible, seems to load up news items faster when clicking on them. After doing a search, it brings up a window that lets you easily see all of the results in a great layout. Offers a portable solution that FeedDemon doesn't. Doesn't push a service like NewsGator on you. If you are a FeedDemon user, you have to give this a try. RSSBandit looks similar to this product, but is just not quite up to par with RSSOwl's speed.

Hey todd, Why pay 50$ for similar software when this is open source and free? In fact, any good person should boycot commercial software altogether.

Doesn't hold a candle to Omea Reader, and the tray notification looks like my daughter designed it.

While FeedDemon is my RSS aggregator of choice I think RSSOwl is a superb product. It kills the age old sayings that Java is slow as it is easily as fast as any other native application. It has nice little features that other clients do not have such as exporting an article to PDF.
Great product that is in very active development. If you are looking for a free RSS reader this is a great place to start looking. It is a much better experience than you get using RSS on Firefox or IE7.

By far, the most complete free RSS Reader.
The Java issues are gone now. Its as fast as any windows application.
Has many features, does what it says, and in a great way.

I am giving a 5 cause I really like it and it is really beautiful and don't want to spoil the ratings. On my computer is fast now and I just Love the name, god...It's great!
But I have a complain: why is giving focus to firefox for every headline I open? I mean, i like to open all the hedlines I am interested with and then go to firefox and read them all. This is a draw back for me. Until this is fixed I will use Wizz Rss, wich is a nice extension, but not all that RSS reader.

I've always liked this program except for the Java issue. The main reason I liked it is (because of Java) it's cross platform. I run both Linux and Windows. And it's handy to use the same settings.
But I'm just not fond of (most) Java apps because of the resource hogging issues.
So, I'll stick with SharpReader for Windows and Akregator for Linux. As far as I'm concerned they are both the best for each of their respective platforms.
