For users with a lot of startup items Startup Organizer offers a nice, fast interface for both autoruns + services. Starter from Codestuff does the same thing for free but doesn't have the ability to control startup order or insert time delays. Startup Cop from PC Mag does both for a lower price but the interface is not good and it has limited control over program parameters. Xecutor as mentioned in a review below is not even the same type of software!

Startup Organizer works smoothly, & performs as advertised. Price is rather too much, IMHO. Xecutor has equivalent functionality & is free for non-commercial use.

An awsome startup organizer. You can even delay the time in which each program loads (solves that missing system tray icon problem in XP)and control what you want to start up.

It really is a useful piece of software. You cheapos that rate it bad because it costs some money should go dumpster diving if you want something for free.

Oh, by the way, excellent customer support.

What, Shareware; $58.50 to buy ??
No, this is definitivly a fiction price.
I boycott this kind of "Moneymakers" - Sorry.

If I use it max. 4 times in a year - must I pay this "hell of money" for it ???
This guy reduce now the "positive reviews" - but it is it debt!
If he would be more realistic in the price, better critics would appear.

@LimeJuice:
Thanks for this link, I use this now occasionally.

> what? $58.50 just for Startup software?

No, the price is actually $25 (which I still think is too much for this type of utility--though I do not factor that into my rating). The $58.50 price is for the "Desktop Collection".

Thanks for helping me make my point that it makes no sense to factor price into a review. I'd never considered the "You could be completely wrong" angle of it before. Thanks!

Regarding this new version, almost all of my observations below still apply.

P.S. CodeStuff Starter is a good utility, but has design issues of its own. I'd be happy to point them out if it were listed here.

StartUp Organizer has some good functionality, but it's just too annoying to me, mainly because of shortcomings in its interface. Yes, I can provide specifics:

* All the cutesy colors. Why is it that every other developer wants to impose a color scheme on me? I can't stand the light pink and blue. Maybe you don't think it matters, but I do.

* The column text gets screwed up sometimes (for example, if I change the "Name" column to show descending order, the text changes to "N me").

* Almost nothing about the interface remembers its settings. Expand the tree, and it will be collapsed when you restart the program. Select "Startup menu" > "Current user", and you'll be back on "All" the next time you run it. Change the column sort order, and it's forgotten as well. About the only thing that is saved between runs is the overall size of the main window. Big deal.

* There is easy no way to enable or disable multiple startup items. You can't make multiple selections, and there is no "enable all" or "disable all" toolbar button or menu option.

* Column sorting is one-dimensional. You can't, for example, sort on "Name" within "Section"; you can only sort on one at a time. Maybe this is trivial, but I've been using another program for years, and I'm used to having registry entries underneath Startup folder entries. I can't do that without having everything in reverse-alphabetical order.

* Text in many of the dialogs gets cut off when using large system fonts.

* The price. In my opinion, this should cost $15, not $25. (No, this point has nothing to do with interface.) I work for a software vendor that makes much better software for a much more reasonable price, so maybe I'm biased toward the customer in a way (no, the vendor I work for is *NOT* a competitor in any way).

Excellent! Best of its kind. Want to load items in a certain order to get the desktop usable quicker? No problem. Do that with lesser apps! Coupled with Startup Monitor, you have an unbeatable system for preventing unwanted items, like trojans, etc. And for making your system faster to start.

Calling Startup Control Panel an "alternative" to this utility is like calling 10-year-old tennis shoes an alternative to a Ferrari. I've been saying for years that SCP was buggy and poorly designed (the tabbed GUI sucks), but ooooooo.... but it's free, so it must be great. StartUp Organizer does it all, and, as usual, you get what you pay for.
