Publisher's Description

TUGZip is an advanced archiving utility with an easy-to-use interface. It supports a wide rage of file formats. You can create 7-ZIP, BZ2, CAB, LHA (LZH), SQX, TAR, TGZ, YZ1 and ZIP archives. It has built-in support for reading/extracting ZIP, 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, CPIO, DEB, GCA, GZ, IMP, LHA (LZH), LIB, RAR, RPM, SQX, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, TAZ and YZ1 archives.

Support for the new Zip64 algorithm enables you to create archives at a total size of 4GB. Included in the package is also a SFX-tool and a scripting tool wich simplifies secure and automated backups. You can encrypt/decrypt files using six different algorithms, Blowfish (128-bit), DES (56-bit), Triple DES (168-bit) and Rijndael (128-bit, 192-bit and 256-bit). You can even convert them to SFX-archives.

Good product.

Still some problem to compress on a USB device (key or drive) with ZIP format.

I like the app, especially the fact that you can create self-extracting executables for free whether you are a personal or business user.

However, development has slowed significantly and support is by the authors own admission, hardly available any more.

While I applaud the effort, I simply can't give it the type of score I would like to give it. If it were more actively developed and supported, I think it would be a much better resource for users. But with WinRAR being so good and 7zip holding its own, TUGZip will have a hard time standing out from the crowd, I think.

This is the best archive utility in my opinion.

I give this program a 5, because it is clean, simple, works great.

It does have a couple of things I can gripe about though.

Winrar will allow you to add an icon to the SFX extractor, plus show a license screen (handy for showing ahem, the serials of some programs that went freeware & have the key included).

But tugzip doesn't allow you to change the icon of the SFX. In addition, doesn't seem to support totally silent SFX like winrar, but shows an extract dialogue.

Am slightly annoyed that it shows 3 possibilities for SFX package, but you can only use 1 because the other 2 are greyed out.

But for zipping, unzipping, yada yada, works nice.
Would really love to see support for viewing sfx comments (so you can remember/change it in the future if you have to, like winrar), & the ability to change the icon of the sfx, plus a totally silent sfx.

Because sometimes you just want it to launch, say, a driver backup program with no dialogue.

Overall, good program, but would be better with these enhancements!

The program has a really nice interface. I would have kept it, if it were able to extract all the files from AA28FullInstaller_BitTorrent.exe (which I think is 7-zip self-extracting archive). Unfortunately TUGZip could read only 2 files from there. Some other archiver (IZArc) could extract all the files though.

This is a very good application. It lets you create numerous archive types (RAR and ACE with a plugin) and view them all. What's nice is the fact that you can look through zip files through it's explorer style interface very quickly. Much better than winzip. Uses 10MB during runtime.

First impressions:

Main GUI looks nice and clean, i like it.

First i noticed that it spams all the context menu items to the root of the menu but cleverly the coder added option to change this. Which is nice. :)

Also i dont like the look of the icon in explorer. IZarc or normal zip looking icon is little better.

note: first, for those of you having problems with explorer.exe crashing, have you installed any extra plugins? the RAR plugin makes explorer crash for me. upon removal of the plugin, no crashing whatsoever. this is mentioned as a known problem in the FAQ. anyway, on to the review:

this is an excellent freeware program. better than the "pay" ones, if you ask me. it will quickly replace winrar/winzip on your computer. supports every format you can imagine (zip, rar, tar, ace) and a ton of others that i've never even heard of. also allows you to open cd images as archives (iso, img, bin).

integrates into the shell just like the others (if you would like) and offers 3 different viewing modes to explore with. i prefer the explorer view (as show in the screenshot) rather than the classic view (only shows an archive's contents) because it allows me to explore a bunch of archives in the same place very quickly.

and speaking of quick, the program runs very fast as well. all around, it's a fantastic program that's worth every penny! (ZERO)

Got this from tugzip site:

TUGZip 3.1.0.2
Size: 3 651kB
Released: October 11th 2004

This thing has been out for more than two months and the explorer crash problem with the shell extension feature hasn't been fixed yet! I love this programme but this shouldn't happen.

Funny how this guy below me systematically rates badly free software. To summarise his views, freeware is systematically crap and freeware users morons (check his other comments). First off, I wonder why he keeps on trying freebies, he should just shell out the cash every single time. And since these kind of people tend to say that if software does the job it says, whatever the price is, it is justified (but if it's free, since in which case it is obviously junk), I bet he has a $100 bottle opener (which works a treat, well worth the money!). Secondly, this is HIS views. My views are that people who systematically rate freebies as crap are morons (yeah, just the opposite of him, different people, different ideas, fair is fair). Lastly, as I said below, I used TugZIP and it worked a treat. Since I assume this guy is a hard core user (proof his, he says so himself in other reviews, he's the man), and since whatever he says is the truth, then that must mean that because I'm a freebie user moron, I setup TugZIP wrongly, causing it to work properly as a side effect.

Very nice! There's not much TUGZip can not do, and it's free. It is very fast and a choice of interfaces. Much better/faster/smaller then ZipGenius.
Only minor things i'd like to see it do: sort columns; remember column settings; show a tree view of the folders or give a flat view option; ability to change the icons used/or skins.
Some items are coming in a future version i see. Very soon it should be as good as PowerArchiver, but free.

OUCH! I'm impressed, very impressed! So long WinRAR, I got around not to pay the bill eventually :) So, I tried ZipGenius and didn't find it to suit 100% of my needs, so what about this one? Well, it's got a batch compression tool, I can add a bunch of files to separate archives. I can select several archives and uncompress them to separate folders. The contextual menu can be customised, and th list goes on! Basically, it has all I ever wanted from WinRAR, ZipGenius, and even WinZip (ahahah, now I was only kidding). So, I hate to say that, but as it stands and from what I've been playing with, it seems perfect, plain and simple. I hate perfection, that means it won't improve! Oh well, I'm sure it'll become perfect plus then :)

Nice interface and feature set but it's not ready for prime time. It messed up my right click menus in WinXP shell. When I wanted to explore any folder right clicking the start menu, TUGZip compressed it O_o. Uninstaller doesn't work well. I had to kill it by hand. In a nutshell: BUGGY.
