Too simple and too expensive for what it is. There are better freeware alternatives (PSPad, RJ TextEd, etc.). And even better shareware alternatives (UltraEdit, EditPlus, etc.).

This used to be my favourite editor; clip text libraries are a huge productivity booster. I really liked this bit of software. However, its development lagged over the years and its developers were very "narky" whenever this was suggested that they add features other editors had.

Then I found EditPlus (http://www.editplus.com/index.html) - it has clip text libraries, seems to be much more actively developed and a knowledgeable users group. This IMHO is a much better text editor than TextPad.

It's great to have these bugs worked out so quickly. TextPad installed and worked fine for me using Vista x64. If Helios has finally committed to developing and maintaining TextPad, then I won't be surprised if it makes a huge return. My 4.x license lasted almost eight years! The great thing about this version is that it handles large files almost as well as UltraEdit, which is fantastic.

TextPad is well worth the $32, and if you have a 4.x license, it's a free upgrade. justme123 — you're right, UltraEdit's Lifetime license has gone up from twice the purchase amount to 2.5 times, but if you're going to spend your day inside a text editor as I do, it's worth it. (Of course, I bought UltraEdit's Lifetime license back when it was real cheap, over five versions ago.) But for most people's uses, and especially writers, TextPad is back and simply fantastic.

Sure, zridling, UltraEdit has a "lifetime license" available, but it's not the default. To get one copy of the UltraEdit-only lifetime-upgrade license, it will cost you $125.

Wow, this announcement made me spew my rot-gut whiskey all over my monitor! And here I thought TextPad died quietly back in 1999. This used to be my favorite text editor, but UltraEdit 13 is light years ahead of it, can handle any file size, and has a lifetime license. And then there's the whole PSPad world that's been blazing a trail around here for years, too. Love the UI updates on this TextPad, too. Great job, just too little too late.

The best thing about TextPad 4 is that it works on "486 computers" with "Windows 95" wich I used one for 2 muts ago wen I bot a new coputer.
It gets 4 uot of 5 becouse it does not have so many functions. I made my home page with TextPad The home page www.seekload.co.nr but to be able to do it i had to make my own textpad by puting in my own funktions.
In the future I will upgrade SeekLoad with TextPad upgrade HTML funktions that I made.
The upgrade is not made by TextPad and you will NOT find it on the TextPad page.

It is great editor, that also includes function for sorting and diffing.

But a prefer Scite/Scintella since is freeware - is also a very great editor.

Nice text editor if you need a notepad replacement. Not a full blown programmer's editor though. If you need such a thing, try UltraEdit.

TextPad is good, but has fell behind and lacks both the power and feature sets that UltraEdit, EditPlus, and NoteTab all now enjoy. If you need a simple app for viewing small text files (less than 5Mb), then TextPad is good. For anything more, consider EditPlus, or for the top of the line, go with UltraEdit.

I have used textpad for a very long time. I can't help but love it, it's a clean, fast loading interface.

It can do simple things very well.

When you are ready for advanced features, it just comes up great.

Macros, Regular Expressions, Search & Replace across a ton of files. Spell-Checking, Clip Libraries which are a great idea. Great backup capability.

I will always use this before any WYSWYG tool.

I am glad I looked at this page! This is a top-notch program that is small and used very little memory on my machine. What is very impressive is its customizability and the massive helpfile, which is one of the most comprehensive I have ever seen.

I have been using TextPad since 1999. In fact yesterday I found my original CD. I have never paid for an upgrade. I use it at least ten times a day. It's edit and replace capabilities are awesome. Add it's macros and clips for more languages I can even pronounce, ( I am not a techy). I also have the excellent Note-Tab Pro a fine editor, but for ease of use and simplicity, TextPad is easy to use, hangs on your explorer bar. Never crashes, and is totally adaptable with enormous user support adding to its clips, etc. My only gripe is that it's spell checker needs work, but it has libraries not only for American English, British English as well as legal and medical dictionaries. It is an essential tool for me. BTW, I do not work for or have any relationship with the developer. In fact, since I changed my email addy, I haven't even heard from them in a long time. Run don't walk to try it out. Can't wait to test the new version.

Excellent program! I like it better than UltraEdit - opens quicker (almost as quick as Notepad)
