I logged on to post a review that it turns out is exactly the same as that which Targaff has so eloquently already posted. I also was disgusted with the malware/adware that the developer has loaded his supposed "OpenSource" software installer with. I am also saddened by it. I usually look to opensource software as a good way to stay away from spyware, but having encountered this a couple of times lately, with CDBurnerXP and now CDex, I think there has to be a better way. I also acknowledge that developers SHOULD be paid for their work if their work is of value, and the free market is the best way to determine that value. I would prefer a payment model a little more like Google has created with their app store where a somewhat stripped down version of the app is usually free, and if you like it, you pay a few bucks for it to have the nagware removed. I say "a little" because a lot of the apps on the google store are loaded with adWare which, as stated above, I loath and think it absolutely the wrong way to go. I prefer TrialWare or a stripped down version that's free and pay to unlock the full version. I have turned away from buying many an app on the google play store because the adWare is so tiresome.

Targaff reviewed v1.76 on Jan 6, 2015

CDex has been one of my staples for a long time - it's elegant and efficient, and just gets the job done. However, I have reduced its score by one star for each page of the 1.76 installer that was trying to infect my computer with the following:

-1 for Entrusted Search Protect, set to install by default
-1 for Optimizer Pro, set to install by default
-1 for MyRadio Player, set to install by default
-1 for GoodGame/Other Empire for Pokki, set to install by default

I don't see that any of this crap was present in the previous version. While I sympathise with the need for developers to obtain funding, going down the malware route is a guaranteed way to lose all of the good will that has built up, especially when, as previous posters have pointed out, there are perfectly good alternatives that haven't resorted to such tactics. If anything, a 1-star rating is generous for an installer that's as plague-ridden as this one.

I've switched to EAC for long term archiving and hifi listening some years ago (not because I hear differences, but because all the technical stuff in EAC seems more trustworthy), but to get some mp3s for simple listening (mp3 player), cdex is still the tool of my choice, because it's simple two clicks and done.

A pretty good test and CDex passed with flying colours. My only quibble is the progress bar doesn't advance when converting to FLAC. Purely cosmetic.

Many of the files were altered or added on 3/7/05, but there's no entry in the "changes" log and no mention of this beta on the website. The expected file name was 1.60, not 2.60; and I don't see the changes within the interface except that the version is now 1.60. Early beta, but stable as ususal.

SubversiveTyrant reviewed v1.51 on Feb 25, 2005

I have been using this piece of software for over five years now. In the last couple years I replaced the default "tinamp" mp3 decoder plug-in with the MAD decoder and it now creates the nicest (subjective) sounding WAV files I've ever created from my mp3's.

I cannot recall a single time this program has crashed within a stable operating system environment nor does it contain any spyware, as I rescan my clean system after every software install.

I normally do not give out five star ratings to programs as almost all software can be improved to some extent. That may very well hold true with this program as well. However, after spending the last five minutes going over the program I can find no real faults, nor anything that I would like to have the program do. So I leave it with a "5."

Noogle

Noogle reviewed v1.51 on Dec 21, 2004

In terms of a free ripper, this is the best. While I haven't found any spyware or bugs, I can't vouch that they don't exist, but for sheer power, usability (it has great CDDB support), a small memory footprint and and a great price (free), you have to at least give it a try.

Since CDeX came out I haven't found many reasons to swap it for something else.

cdex does have some bugs. i ripped a retail cd in .wav form once and cdex ripped the first song and part of the second song into one .wav file. then so on. as a result, a .wav file would start in the middle of a song then end in the middle of a new song. bleh!
other than that, its the best ripper i ever used! as for jespielm's question about slow .wav extraction with cdex, i think it does that so the wav file will come out error-free. i ripped a new unscratched cd with musicmatch and one of the songs had a "click" 2 minutes into the song. but when i ripped it with cdex, it was perfect! cdex is the king and other rippers are its slave! KING CDEX! lol

This program is extreme in the best meaning! It offers Full Paranoia mode with which you rip your even badly scrateched CDs a few times faster than Exact Audio Copy does. It offers a number of built-in encoders: LAME3.92 and Ogg Vorbis 1.0 are the major two. It does perfect "on the fly" rips and out of hundreds CDs ripped none have a single skip (that's where it kills Audiograbber completely).
To the guy who wrote: "Al my mp3's are riped with 192 kb\s double stereo and max quality, and i think CD'ex cannot do that." You apparently know nothing about MP3 encodring or at least what happend with the technology in the last 2 years, most probably you still use lousy LAME3.70 I suggest you go read some stuff before you claim that your 192kbps HQ rips are good, a good place to start is http://www.hydrogenaudio.org - that's the place where people with best ears meet. Stop encoding using you low quality 192kbps "FULL Stereo", and start using "--alt-preset standard" or "--alt-preset fast standard" to hear how the music can really sound. (but in CDex don't forget to put upper bound of bitrates to 320Kbps and lower bound to 32kbps - this will maximize quality)

ditoa

ditoa reviewed v1.50 Beta 7 on Aug 10, 2002

busta

busta reviewed v1.50 Beta 7 on Aug 9, 2002

Each beta gets better and better. And for the person that says this: "Al my mp3's are riped with 192 kb\s double stereo and max quality, and i think CD'ex cannot do that." you're really out of the MP3 loop apparently. Get this CDex beta, and go to the encoder settings, go to the Quality dropbox, and select --alt-preset standard or --alt-preset fast standard. Either of those will blow away your currently really lousy encoder settings ("double stereo" is the worst of the FhG stereo modes) and CBR 192 is just stupid when you can use far better VBR.

bezainex: when i use CDex i am getting a better sound quality than i got with AudioGrabber. I guess there is alot of change in each release as when a build build comes out there is normally a new LAME engine included also which means the quality will be different, AudioGrabber (as far as i know) does not upgrade the engine as much using more stable builds. Try using CDex and the engine from AudioGrabber to encode mp3's and see if you have any difference. All in all a great program been using it for years, author is a great bloke always replies to my emails about bugs and/or new features. Well made, stable and free, what more can you want?

bezainex

bezainex reviewed v1.50 Beta 5 on Jul 2, 2002

Ok...this program is good...but we cannot achieve the sound quality of Audiograbber. If you have a top class speaker's set like creative inspire or a Harman Kardon set, you will notice diferences from the musics riped with CDex and Audigrabber. Al my mp3's are riped with 192 kb\s double stereo and max quality, and i think CD'ex cannot do that. I have over 20 gb of mp's riped with Audiograbber and there's no match for it. If you want a free program and extremely user friendly, CDex is the one. But if you enjoy max quality and you have an ear that can detect the smallest error...then use Audiograbber.

Easiest way to make good quality MP3s (Try OGG too, quite good). Since it's using LAME, the MP3 quality will be better then MusicMatch Jukebox (17Khz lowpass at every bitrate?) and especially RealJukebox. CDex is great.

The way for the absolutle best MP3s at the moment is Exact Audio Copy and the LAME encoder. It allows you to really dial-in LAME commandlines. r3mix.net is an excellent site for such info.

For a freeware program, this thing is amazing. I don't see why people would want appearance over QUALITY. Quantity or quality? I'll take quality. It could use a make over tho:) But anyhow, yeah, this thing works good, worth archiving.

This program is fantastic. Other than the interface being a little confusing this is by far the best ripper I have tried and I have tried them all.

Very nice and USEFUL program, and MP3 quality is very good. Only problems are it's a little confusing to figure out where it stores MP3's after they are created, and I wish CDEX wouldn't give itself a wedgie when you try to create an MP3 from the HDD. CDEX is nevertheless on my top 25 list of best Freeware programs.

This one is awesome! If you have a Multiprocessor system go for the encoder gogo. CDex is the only working GUI for this codec. Fully configureable names and folders formats when ripping. 6 stars out of 5!

For those of you having problems with MosASCII Beta 3 saying it's expired when you run it for the first time, I am trying to figure out why. Hopefully I will have a fix out by tonight. For those of you who are having problems with the setup, I'll release the next version using a different setup application. Everyone who is having the expire problem, please e-mail me at mosbugs@elitemrp.net and tell me all you can, what OS you run, what ver of Mos you had previously, if you had one. Thank you.

This is a great ripper, and I would probably use it if I didn't already use Nero. Sure Nero is a burner, but it also has ripping and encoding capabilities. It can rip/encode/burn MP3, VQF, or WMA, and that's why I like it.

warhorse47 reviewed v1.30 Beta 3 on Aug 16, 2000

I love it. Who cares what it looks like? Just highlight what you want, click the mpg picture and minimize it! And with multiple instances, you can rip 2 CDs at once (sacrificing time of course because of the limited bus bandwidth, but hey, it doesn't matter!

The only complaints for this program that I've seen are for interface, but dammit, does everything have to be beautifully skinned in order to get full marks? It serves its purpose--you don't have to worry much about aesthetics when you're dealing with an _mp3 encoding utility_. After all, even if you write mp3s as much as I do (for personal use, of course ;), it's not like I stick around and watch the interface.

I've been using this program for a few versions now, and be sure that I'll be downloading this one asap. It's an excellent program and it's free (yay!), but my only gripe is that the vbr settings are somewhat poorly documented--I had to trial&error until I found a setting that gave excellent reproduction for a good rate/size.

I've been using CDex for more than a year now... It just keeps getting better! Version 1.30 seems to rip to .mp3 format quite a lot faster than the last versions. The quality is great (perfect reproductions at 192kbps). I've tried all the rest..why bother? CDex is THE BEST in my humble opinion!

Yeah interface really sucks like hell (back to Win3.11?), but program is good anywayz... so I still give it 3 points.

Great program. I've been using this program forever, before mp3 became mainstream. Programs like this will help keep mp3 alive! Combined with LAME, this program produces results most people could not distinguish from Audiograbber + FhG - a package which costs hundreds of dollars.

jwinton

jwinton reviewed v1.30 Beta 0 on May 15, 2000

Works great! The only program I use to rip CDs. Combined with LAME encoder, it produces some terrific sounding mp3s. BTW, this was released about 2 weeks ago... eFront seems to be a little slow in posting all releases lately. What happened?

This program Rocks!! If you have two cdroms and a dual processor you can run multiple instances of the program and encode 2 mp3's at once. It does all i want it to do and more. Plus its free...

Damodred

Damodred reviewed v1.20 Beta 9 on Dec 21, 1999

It's free, it's fast, and it supports most of the encoders out there (LAME, Blade, Fraunhoffer) - you can also compress to WMA...and there's ultra-fast access to all functions. You can start encoding with just two clicks! (CDDB (world button), then CD-WAV button and it's done!).
A program doesn't have to be pretty to work well...in fact, I prefer no fluff-ware to bloatware which doesn't work right (*cough*, MusicMatchJukeBox, *cough*)

It's a very good Freeware CD Ripper.

Just as good as AutoCatalyst or Audiograbber.
