FAR is one of those timeless utilities that by all reason should have out lived it usefulness some time ago. But, the truth of the matter is once you get over the configuration and little idiosyncrasies. FAR actually grows on you and becomes one of the more interesting tools, to solve data management issues with. Years ago there was a file manager for DOS and early Linux distros simply called "L". FAR reminds me that simply because times have changed, some tools are truly timeless.

Old school win32 console app.
Must have tool.
I can't do nothing without Far manager.

Version 2.0 introduced native UTF-8/UTF-16 support, alas, many other parts of the application have been rewritten and become buggy, e.g. search in a file "misses" existing information.

Truly the best Norton Commander clone for the Windows console. Lots of plugs-in available (FTP, Archiving, file splitting/combining, process list, etc.). It is console only which may turn off some users but the benefit is the low resource and memory usage compared to other file managers (tops out about 6 MB with several plug-ins running vs.Total Commander (30MB) or Speed Commander (28 MB)). Far Commander can't view graphics files either, it relies on whatever viewer is installed on your system
If you were a heavy user of Norton Commander in the DOS era (as I was) you will find FAR easy to use and configure. Unfortunately there are other alternatives that mimic NC such as Total Commander, Speed Commander in addition to good freeware such as Free Commander and Double Commander.
It is portable however and therefore has a place on a flash drive and since it is console it would work when booting into safe mode command prompt for deleting stubborn malware.
Highly recommended as an addition (but not replacement) to your primary file manager.

Well, it is not a DOS application, but a Windows console one.
There is also a Windows x64 executable available.

Best DOS clone out there. But who needs that if there is Total Commander? I don't.

The Best Norton Commander Clone file manager on the windows platform, in the world of file managers many paradigms have emerged but the classic orthodox dual panel display still reigns king for speed and ease, FAR is above and beyond in the orthodox category with its configurability, speed and vast array of plugins that extend the program to beyond like an internal ftp client, email client, process explorer, audio player, remote control etc etc... If you're a keyboard user and missed the good old days of Norton Commander, FAR is simply a godsend. In my opinion nothing beats file management through the use of a keyboard and a classic dual panel file manager like FAR and Total Commander.
Very highly recommended.

OK. The program looks promising, BUT!
When downloading the Setup EXE from the Homepage, Avira Antivir interrupts and notifies me that the file contains a virus. it's name is DR/GrayBird.52
The URL of the infected (?) file is farmanager.com/files/FarManager170.exe
ATTENTION, it's the same file linked here, when you click on download, you'll get it!
up-to-date scanner: Avira Antivir v7.00.00.03 with definitions v6.34.00.121, from 2006/03/30 (Today!)
however: the rar-archive distributed on the homepage is clean. so this might be a false report for the installer. i don't know.

Pros: Fast file manager
You can perform all manner of data / file management actions with presets
FREE
Been around forever
If configured properly, can be used as a Version mgr,
Cons: Geeky - Takes a while to get used too. P.S. I don't care who you are, getting FAR up and functioning to your custom configuration takes time, trial and error. But in the end it's rock solid
Bottom Line: FAR is one of those timeless utilities that by all reason should have out lived it usefulness some time ago. Pros: Love the layout. Does what it's suppose to do.. and does it well. Can't live without it.
Cons: Wish i could edit some of the menu options. Setup my own keyboard commands and macros. If it's possible, i can't seem to find it.
Bottom Line: Sort of.. kind of.. reminds me a little bit like XTGold. Who of You can remember that far back?? i still have XTGold on my system... in a DOSBox. i will Never give it up.

Fine piece of a rare geme! I still find Connec navigator (aka IBM Handshaker) more complex in options and functionality.
Scodan: notice that you're the only one that gave 1 fot this, just look to the other ratings - "friends know why"

What kind of masochist would use a file manager with THAT interface on Windows?

The best file manager in the world! And you should't forget it has plugins, hundreds of them, starting from stupid tetris games through editor syntax highlighting and up to a featurefull mail client. And you can write your own plugins too using the very powerfull API.
