Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run many of your Windows XP productivity applications directly from a Windows 7-based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology such as Windows Virutal PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environement for Windows 7.
Windows XP Mode provides a 32-bit Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (SP3) environment pre-loaded on a virtual hard disk. Client virtualization software, like Windows Virtual PC is a pre-requisite to use Windows XP Mode.

I bought a new HP Notebook with Windows 7 Ultimate and downloaded XP Mode from Microsoft. That took 90 minutes. It worked okay the first time, except for my not knowing how to get it to recognize my flash drive. The next day, I started up the PC again and later clicked for XP Mode. This little window pops up and tells you it is opening Virtual PC or something. You have to wait three or four minutes for this to activate the XP Mode, much longer than I would prefer to wait. Then the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh attempts that I made to open XP Mode all failed. It would give me an error message, "Could not enable the integration features" then suggests I try again or continue without these features. Why should I continue without the features, and what features will be I be sacrificing? That doesn't make sense. I called Microsoft and asked them to help me. They opened a case and did their best to get XP Mode to work, but were unable to do so. Thus I returned the computer to HP for a refund. I ordered another Notebook that has Windows 7 32-bit. I think this will be the answer to being able to use my old software. XP Mode is NOT worth it.

Gotta say, i think this is a bad idea from Microsoft. Windows 7 is a great Operating System and has run everything I've thrown at it without needing a virtual XP.
I also feel it is going to slow down the adoption of 64 bit in retail as many companies will say 'keep using the old 32 bit version in XP mode" rather than fork out to make new drivers, ect.
We need to completely break with the past, it really is time that 32 bit software was abandoned. Hopefully Windows 8 will only be available in 64 bit, and it won't have any kind of backwards compatibility with 32 bit applications.

Perfect, lets me connect to work on the 32-bit only Cisco VPN client from my 64-bit Windows 7 laptop.

The idea is gr8 for ppl terrifed of getting rid of crappy xp.
But all current 64bits os from ms has a systemwow64 folder. Thats the emulationpart. Here are the extra 1 gb of files need to run 32bit apps.
Bf2 is an exampel. Its kinda old. Written for 32bit XP works without hassle in win7. If not working try chose a compatilbitemode like xp or vista for the .exe file.
99% of all things for me games/apps and alot of crap works in win7 without tweaking. XPmode is just resourcehungry. Rightclick .exe file choose complailbe with xp or vista and u dont need the xpmodecrap.

This is a great idea. To bad we can't play 32bit games, but no virtualization can't run 3D graphics. We're on the way to 64 bit and thats what matters.

Oh well, I really don´t know how to rate this.....It let me use my old Genius Scanner USB with no driver support in x64 Windows and let me use Roxio Label Creator 6 too, so, at this level everything is fine..........but, why did I loose those things in first place? :(
Now they must refine it to let my Lifeview 3000 Tv Tuner work again and then I will wait Windows 7 x64 with open arms :)
I think 4 is a fair rating.....

Sounds like a good idea, but I haven't been able to test it because this needs Hardware Virtualization support in CPU which my test rig with Athlon X2 4600 doesn't have. I'm giving it a neutral rating so far because of compatibility problems.

but maybe some need the whole system [at the enterprise level] somehow, and not only the ability to run separate apps? don't know really, just guessing...

So this is microsofts idea of compatibility for XP? Wow. So then why would I not just use VirtualBox in seamless mode instead?
Whats really funny is that in Ubuntu I can run most XP apps/games natively without a virtual machine. MS is so dumb that they can't even do that when they have the fricken source code for XP????
I'm totally stunned at how Microsoft are a huge group of complete morons.
