MPC uses an illegal MPEG2 decoder filter without paying any of the licensing fees involved to the DVD Consortium. Sure, you probably don't give a damn, but Zoom Player is a commercial product, unlike MPC and getting sued is more of an issue.

Subtitle support is done through a 3rd party directshow filter called DirectVobSub. Perhaps you had an older version of it installed, or didn't set a proper font for it, but there's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't work for you.

The next version should simplify some of the features. But seriously, MPC/WMP don't have most of these features.
The default values of Zoom Player do work well, you don't need to mess around with anything in order to get standard media to play...

While I like the GUI, for some reason, this client is A LOT slower than the "Burst!" client which uses a variant of the original Python source (and yes, I fiddled with the various parameters quite extensively).
