GodLike.

Pound for pound, this is the most powerful little TextBeast that I have ever seen. Unlimited file size and columnar cut and paste together with the plugin architecture and blazing performance make this a pocket battleship as far as text editors go.

FIVE stars (would that I could give SIX).

Not bad, not bad at all. The contrary actually!

Let me start by saying that I do love text editors; I own licenses for many different editors even though I think that most of them is garbage. For years I thought I knew every text editor available but seems I was wrong. It's first time I heard about AkelPad and I wonder how I missed this.

AkelPad is minimalistic, feature-rich (with plugins installed) and rock stable programming editor. It is an open source application but unlike other opensource apps AkelPad is well crafted, well debugged with obvious care in detail and quality. Commercial and open source vendors have to learn many things from AkelPad about what good quality software really means.

The truth is that I never liked modular editors and AkelPad is a modular editor based on an extremely tiny core engine and a dozen optional modules. However the plugin implementation is one of best in terms of integration with core GUI; In some aspects the plugin system is even better than the one of its main competitor EmEditor. The same can be said for AkelPad Unicode and ANSI/ISO encoding support, macro - scripting functionality, and the overall configurability.

Still lacking some necessary features though. It is a bit slow on screen refreshing and scrolling when using syntax highlighting and there is no "find / replace in files", no output screen capture (useful when running external tools and compilers), no realtime column block editing, no help file just sparse documentation. (Minus one star because of these issues).

However, despite the apparent lack of these advanced features AkelPad is an excellent editor that comes at an unbeatable price! Personally, I still like more the EmEditor or EditPlus, my all time favorite editing tools but I have to admit that AkelPad has surprised me with it's quality and stability.

Kudos to the program developer for creating such a great app!

This is *exactly* what I've been looking for! A plain text editor is so very difficult to find. We need more plain text editors. :)

Not too bad, but if you're after a small, efficient notepad replacement I'd recommend Notepad2 instead. http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html

Now has an updater for the plugins which works perfect btw.

Although it still doesn't even nearly reach Vim's functionality, AkelPad actually rocks. I especially like the MDI view. :)

Exactly. If I need to write code I'd be sure to use something else. As a notepad replacement nothing compares. Especially notepad++.

How dare you even compare it to Notepad++?!
No editor is even close

I was looking for something to run dedicated, fast and in conjunction with the app RenPhoric. This works great.

I must say I have tried them all, notepad ++(?), editra, you name it, but I always come back to this and haven't used anything else in quite a while.
Other than a dedicated secretary, it's more than I need.

Ample options, Single window mode, or Multiple window mode with either MDI typical mode or tabbed/button mode, a seemingly solid plugin system and seems to work just fine on Windows 7 64bit.
