Publisher's Description

Stardock BootSkin is a program that allows users to change their Windows 2000 and Windows XP boot screens. Unlike other programs that can change the Windows XP boot screens, this does so in a safe manner. It doesn't patch the Windows XP kernel, nor does it require the user to download replacement Windows XP kernels to do so.

This has 2 advantages: 1) Boot screens that use BootSkin are typically under 20K compared to other boot screen programs whose files are over 2 MEGABYTES. 2) There is no risk of having your system unable to boot due to a corrupted file or after applying a service pack.

My rating isn't because there's a native way to replace the boot screen; it's because I hate Stardock and all the crap they puke out.

Will rate is a three (***) when it skins the shutdown screen as well. Anyway, my rigs so fast that I don't even see the boot screen. Cheerio!

Alright, so i'm sorry i called some of you morons, i was just feeling pushed in a corner with comments that don't really seem to be justified in my eyes,... maybe you have troubles with the program, but i don't.. and i always have trouble with running programs but when they do run properly it's worth mentioning i guess..

Anyway, it doesn't matter how much registry keys this program adds, as long as it doesn't hack up your kernel, so i don't know but i'd rather have my registry al hacked up than my kernel, cause some of those aren't system restorable..

And another thing,.. it's not because one thinks that programs like bootskin aren't necessary that's it's worth to rate it so bad..

Maybe you don't understand the meaning of this rate-thingie.. you rate the PROGRAM not your comment about those kinds of programs.. else you totaly skew the true rating.. function is what matters here..

This program does it's job wel so i rate it 5.

How about we rename this to: Bootskin of Death ?
Get it? For a program that isn't supposed to mess with your boot process if it doesn't work, just have to say, that's not true. If it doesn't work, you won't boot at all, in my experience. Just say no.

Tried to use "Random Boot Screen at startup". After a restart i got a blue screen.

Hey, murassmeblade, if someone complains about the lack of a feature (such as randomization), and that feature is added LATER, the comment was still valid at the time. Free clue: Check the VERSION that is associated with comments before you complain. Anyway... BootSkin is just a freebie that Stardock hopes will suck you into their evil, unstable, bloatware web of system problems and slowdowns. Why anyone would want to hassle with this to make their boot screen cutesy is beyond me.

Was neat till I realized it messed something up and would not allow my computer to hibernate anymore. Shouldn't be a problem for most people that shut down their computers, but I like to hibernate my laptop when I'm not using it.

comments like below is just stupid.
if the program is not doing something you are interest, then why the hell would u install it?
The program does exactly what it advertise. If you can't read the summary, then that's your problem.
bxtching about something not useful to you personally is just as stupid as if all the windows users start giving zero on linux/mac wares simply cuz they can't use it on windows.

Does what it advertises, and does it well without hacking any system files.
However, as the other poster below noted, this program leaves behind a LOT of registry entries after uninstall. As well note the program uses a service to do this work. I also agree with another reviewer that a randomization feature would be keen.

tried it out, compared it to other things, evaluated NOW my comment!
Installed... ran... unimpressed... uninstalled... registry search... delete... delete...delete...delete...delete.... my gosh how many lines do they leave in the registry after uninstall anyway... delete...delete... delete... heck with it... ran restore. Back to normal. And don't call people you don't know a moron.

Adding a 5 cause those morons probably didn't even try this program or gave a good look into it!

First try it out, compare, evaluate THEN comment!

I don't use Bootskin myself , but a comment of someone here is inaccurate . You don't HAVE to use a Wincustomize subscription to download bootskins. I don't have a WC subscription ( yet ) and yet I've been able to download plenty of themes for my apps from the site. I can't see how this is any different

StyleXP do the same!!! only styleXP keep the bmp-file in zip format, and whit styleXP ur get chance to change theme/login/boot and style/wallpaper all in one....

It is good software, however it need many other additional skin included as default. and because skin size is small better to include as many as possible. this will not add the download size too much. so people will love it.Thanks

Superb idea with that kernel driver. But unfortunatly it has also some bad sides: I installed it on two computers (work&laptop) and each one had problems hibernating after some programs were launched and they were running for some time. Uninstalling solved the problem again. My laptop also booted fading in the old logo, before changing to the bootskin. I wonder how you would get around that problem. Anyway ****!

Very Good Program. I have used StyleXP in the past and it seemed to have problems adding new bootskins. This program is very simple to use and easy to add bootskins.

I'd give 5* for the technology itself, and 2* for the lame application that provides a front-end for it. The BootSkin driver has worked very well for me; it's seamless, and you'd never know that I didn't simply hack the kernel to replace the boot screen. That part is very nice. The front-end is really bare-bones though. There is no randomization feature. You can't avoid the stupid confirmation dialog. You can't view larger screen shots of boot screens. You can't resize the window. There is no documentation at all. Most of the BootSkin screens available do suck, but there are a few pretty good ones. (As a sidenote, how can software be released as "RC0"? What does that mean? If it's the first release candidate, that would be "RC1".)

Be carefull, after installing my system freeze at booton (win2k) and after a long long work I could boot again (You have to disable the service bootscreen in the registry after boot in linux with a special driver to write ntfs particion)

Excellent program...they are able to safely modify standard windows boot screen w/o modifying the NT Kernel...more than 160 Boot Skins are currently available @ wincustomize.com...Excellent program and 24 and 36-Bit screens are soon to come according to the Stardock Rumor Mill...WooHooo!!!

Nice tool. Save to use, compared to other tools or manual Changing the skins via res-hacking.
Only bad is the Missing Preview, the small thumb-nail view is just to small to see how it will look l8er.

a 5 for being free and not hacking ntoskrnl.exe. a 2 for missing Preview (but i'm shure it'll be implemented soon).

Only few skins avaible, but quite easy to make your own.

Agree 100% with the first reviewer's comments....give 5 stars for ease of use and 2 stars for available boot screens. But final rating, 4 stars, based on the fact that it's free. With the recent release of BootSkin, I hope more boot screen submissions will be forthcoming in the near future. Thanks Stardock Corporation and continued success!

Great little program that does exactly what it is supposed to. Given that this program if fairly new, there aren't to many great skins for it yet, but I'm sure that will change in time!

Program is good , if there only were some decent bootscreens , no offence to the guys at wincustomize , but the authors at themexp.com , btw a StyleXP affiliate are simply more creative , at least for now . Still 4 stars , because of the ease of use and the lower risk to crash your system .
