This editor does everything I need a text editor to do and ranks at the top of my favorites list. And before the trolls start, I have used notepad++ (32 and 64-bit), PSPad, EditPad (lite and pro), UltraEdit and CodeWrite. I particularly like the way it handled rectangular blocks of text and macros - it is far more streamlined and logical than most of the others.
Of them all this sits at the top of my favorites regardless of price.

Very fast, compact and supporting huge files.
A pitty we do not have a lite free version.

For large Text and HTML files I prefer it over PSPad editor.

Hilarious. Notepad++. Compared to EmEditor Professional.
That person must not know that Notepad++ is strictly 32-bit. They must also not have tried it with 100-MB+ files, or else they'd know that EmEditor is drastically faster.
I tested search/replace operations under Windows 8.1 on a 146-MB file with EmEditor (64-bit) and Notepad++. The repeatable results: What EmEditor was able to do in 4 seconds or less, Notepad++ took over 6 MINUTES to do!
But hey, it's free, so let's rate it highly, right?
Calling Notepad++ an "alternative" to EmEditor Professional is like calling a bucket an alternative to a firehose.
And BTW, if paying for an application is the biggest mistake you've ever made, you're doing pretty well. Although I have to think that's hyperbole.

Maybe expensive for someone but certainly not garbage, actually imho best editor. Notepad++ or Akelpad are great free alternatives.

Notepad++, while completely free, has a ton of better features than this expensive garbage. Buying this crap (for just 1 year) was the biggest mistake i made in life.

Pros: Native 64-bit
Handles huge files
Excellent column/irregular block editing support
Cons: No freeware version.
Bottom Line: This editor does everything I need a text editor to do and ranks at the top of my favorites list. As a paying customer, I expected much more from a "major upgrade" for a shareware text editor. The free Notepad++ does so many things way more properly and easy.
Thumb down, I will not pay again for such a poor overall "upgrade".

I give very few software products a 5 star rating - EmEditor is one of them. This is the best text editor I have ever used. I don't use "Office" software for word processing, instead I tend to produce HTML documents and save them as a PDF if I need to distribute them. Using EmEditor and its Clip Text feature I have developed my own clip text library that significantly helps this process.
The developer is quite approachable and helpful. He keeps this product up to date with enhancements and bug fixes.
I highly recommend EmEditor.

Peter

A very impressive program. I love that it's available in a 64-bit version.

After years of searching i finally found THE notepad/text editor. Plethora of features to make it powerful text editor and great speed/stability to make it notepad replacement (maybe even the fastest text editor on the market). It has portable version. If you don't wanna spend money than try notepad++, akelpad or notepad2 but i think this one is well worth the money.
guti reviewed v10.0.5 on Jan 20, 2011
Not the most featured text editor, but the one that better handles big and huge files, being quite compact and fast.
If you cannot spend money, AkelPad is a good compelling choice. If not, pay for it, and get the performance.
PS: Really like its x64 build, specially mading it portable.

Finally !
I finally found a text editor that is fast, polished, full of options, and has easy options to use regular expressions, script, batch processing with having to jump through all kind of buggy hoops (dada N++ !!!)

Pass. Like bigmama says, NotePad++ is way better and free. If you want an editor with the file explorer etc as well as a couple of other frills (in my opinion unnecessary but whatever), I'd also look at PSPad (www.pspad.com) - also free. It's inexcusable for someone to consider paying for a program like this, much less consider charging for one.

roswell: Jarte is a word processor. Please do not confuse a word processor with a text editor.

This is a small wonder. I'm switching from vim to this after > 10 years on vim; if that's not a compliment, I don't know what is.
The search highlight feature is indispensable. Configuring custom highlighting for any programming language is easy. With the project plugin and autocomplete, it does almost as much as an IDE for 1/10th of the memory. And it's the (only) viable option to operate with large files.

EmEditor,
This is a great editor stable and have many features. However there are better excellent free editor in the net. Like the "JARTE" this one is free and is much powerful and is open source.
bigmama reviewed v8.02 Beta 1 on Dec 31, 2008
good editor
no need to pay however as notepad++ does the same (and more) and is free.

Thanks for the clarification zhouzh2. Let's admit this: the Windows platform is blessed with several great text editors, most of which are extremely customizable. If the $40 license cost seems too much, it seems to be a lifetime license, as this is the third version my license has worked on.
dhry reviewed v8.01 Beta 1 on Dec 4, 2008
Notepad++ does pretty much everything this does, and costs $39.99 less to own. If you feel you REALLY need to pay for an editor, go lite with EditPlus for $5 cheaper or max out with UltraEdit for $10 more. $40 for something of this calibre is disgusting.
zhouzh2 reviewed v8.00 RC5 on Nov 18, 2008
For zriding: UE supports big files, it just need a few tweak: basicly, UE is desk base, so it supports opening very large files instantly. To protect your source file, UE always does a copy and what it actually opens is the copied file. If it loads slow, it's very likely that your hard drive is too slow.
BUT UE is REALLY buggy in terms of muiltply language support. Strange code when selecting text, can't undo after column select and dragging or regex sarch and replace.....
And, it's bloat. It doesn't make any sense that a text editor includes 3 regex engine(functions all the same),both macro and script engines(the latter should do everything the former can do) and code entironment change? Too many function under UE manu can be done through regex, and , should be removed. They add these just to attract Newbies IMHO.
No text editor under Windows is perfect. Emeditor has it's own problem, such as balancing core functions and plug-ins or macros. But with EE's good support for Unicode and POWERFUL macros(hope you know what I'm saying, if not, just try EE and don't forget to read is macro help) , EmEditor is the closest.

How do you know what features it has if you don't try it :-(
As a current paid-up user of EmEditor I can tell you that it is infinitely better than either notepad++ (which crashes all the time) or notepad2 (simply a NotePad replacement). And I HAVE tried tose two and many others. EmEditor ranks up there with EditPlus as a high quality text editor. Sometimes you just have to pay for something that's good.

I've been using this program for almost 3 years now and I love it. I don't get all the negative remarks and votes. Must be some sort of editor envy. Considering all the awards this program is winning, and how good the usability is, me thinks someone has an axe to grind. 2 thumbs up, way up. Give it a try, don't rely on the negative nancies.

When there are excellent freeware alternatives, creating and making money from shareware app, however good, must be difficult to say the least.

By its modular nature, EmEditor stays lean and fast even after version 8. Great coding, good support, and fairly priced.
______________
dhry, don't be a troll. Talk about EmEditor here or don't bother. Your comment belongs on the PSPad page, unless you're comparing more than mere price. PSPad IS great, indeed. Otherwise, I could run all around FileForum writing "This is free on Linux!" on every page.

Want to know how to save $40? Get PSPAD instead. http://www.pspad.com. Does everything this does, probably more, and is FREE.

Very good Unicode support, nice editing engine but no proper MDI, no built-in ftp and quite buggy.

A very good text editor. I have used if for several years now. The code base is reliable and the support is always very good.
Who needs FTP in a text editor, that's what FileZilla is for. I like products EmEditor, good at their prime job not trying to be "a jack of all trades".

EmEditor Professional 7.01 RC 1
EmEditor Professional 7.01 RC 1 is available for download. This version fixes bugs including:
- Replace in selection only with Search Only Word option.
Download:
http://www.emeditor.com/pub/emed701rc1epx.msi (32-bit)
http://www.emeditor.com/pub/emed701rc1ep64.msi (64-bit)
The portable version can be produced from the Import/Export wizard on the Tools menu after you use the installer. However, the portable version runs slower than one using the Registry.

Well, then stick with UltraEdit, nothing wrong there except it no longer handles large files. For me, I have one great FTP program and I'd much rather use it than an inferior built-in one any day. So we'll disagree on this one.
But basically you're gripe is one of: "I'm too cheap," which is not about the quality of the editor itself but of something you wish it had. Oy. On that basis, I guess I should hate MS Windows because it doesn't run Compiz Fusion.
lzvk25 reviewed v7.00.1 RC10 on Jan 14, 2008
Yes, we do need FTP support for real professional work, the rest is just... decoration.
I paid for UltraEdit and it has an excellent FTP support support and it is included, it is even capable of connecting to MVS Mainframes. On the other hand, if you want to have FTP suport on EmEditor, you have to pay extra... Why ?
So, for a simple FTP support why not go for what it is already there for free : PSPad (included) or Notepad++ (via plugins).
zridling reviewed v7.00.1 RC7 on Jan 12, 2008
Yea, hell will freeze over before anyone would pay for shareware. Please, dude, that's a phony complaint. Every time someone doesn't like any app, they drag out the ol' 'doesn't do FTP' line.
lzvk25 reviewed v7.00.1 RC7 on Jan 11, 2008
No FTP support and if you want it, you have to pay an extra $39.99 (EmFTP)... Not Good.
Basically there is better freeware (Notepad++ or PSPad).
ssb reviewed v7.00.1 RC5 on Jan 9, 2008
I love EmEditor Unicode support (really good), scriptability and some of its features.
However It lacks true MDI (multi document interface) which is a major limitation. Also hate the fact that some necessary features are only available via plugins.
zridling reviewed v7.00.1 RC5 on Jan 8, 2008
Hard not to love what EmEditor has become: smart, elegant, fast, and with serious power to handle large documents, unlike UltraEdit, which retreated from the challenge. Version 7 is a keeper for a long time.
