Publisher's Description
Pegasus Mail is an e-mail client that interacts directly with the user, allowing mail to be sent, read, filed, printed and otherwise manipulated through a graphical interface. Small and fast, it can be left running permanently on the workstation and includes powerful tools to notify the user when new mail arrives. It can run on single Windows computers, or local area networks - it has special support for Novell NetWare LANs that allow it to operate intuitively and with almost no maintenance. It also supports multiple users on a single computer. It can act as a complete internal mail system on its own without needing further servers or components: it can send and receive Internet mail on its own using standard protocols (SMTP, IMAP and POP3).

I have tried a variety of other email clients. IMHO, there is nothing that beats the power, flexibility and reliablity of Pegasus. Some of the features that make it superior are perhaps not for the stubbornly non-geeky, but power has its price in the form of a (not daunting) learning curve. Once its merits are appreciated and exploited, Pegasus really stands out.

I loved Pmail, but please let it die a graceful death. 16-bit support? DOS? Win 95? Netware? David Harris was amazing. But unless he has come up with a 32/64-bit program that offers something better than Thunderbird (yes, I know TB is currently 32-bit), then let's remember pmail for the excellent program it was.

I don't actually use Pegasus Mail anymore but it's been a great free client for a long time now (since ~1990?). Pegasus Mail is very light, efficient and has tools that many other clients don't. It's made to read and organize email and it does an outstanding job. If you like Thunderbird or Outlook Express or Eudora or whatever then by all means use them but choice is a good thing. I'm glad that Google's Chrome, Opera and even IE (version 7+) exist even though I personally still prefer Firefox.

When we have a client like Thunderbird, why do we need this?
TB has a full calendar, ongoing development, and its based on the very solid mozilla engine.

It IS still being developed but author is requesting 1000 donations of $50 ea. He has over 300 now. Looks fine but I found the open source Sylpheed (japanese dev) and it is excellent too. I almost wish I had seen this first so I could have tried it. I like sylpheed 'cause it's completely portable, incl encryption & spell check and has gtk themes as well.

Just repeating what others say.
I have used it for about decade. Tried others, but always came back.
User interface have been improving, but still it is somewhat strange. In a way, it is maybe a good thing. People may suppose that they know email, while there is many small details. New interface and need to read instructions may force people to try to understand what they are really doing.
Very good program.

Firstly, I'd rather telnet to port 110 and use manual POP3 commands to read my email than even CONSIDER using rubbish like Thunderbird. Right, that's out of the way, back on topic now.. like yokozuna, Pegasus was the first real decent email client I ever used on Windows. Surprised to see it's still around. I went to Eudora for a while, and then moved to TheBat. Nothing wrong with Pegasus back then, and I'll recommend it now because it's still free.. plus they've added multiuser which back then was the reason I left it. And it's written by a Kiwi!

I've used this for several years now, always quickly coming back to it after trying other clients (including Thunderbird).
This beta improves what for me is the program's most indispensible feature: on-server preview with selective downloading/deletion, which I think is the simplest way to deal with spam.
The best gets better, and earns another five-star rating.
