This is a great software, I have been using it for over a year. Although it lacks some features of pickpick, which is NOT freeware, it makes up for it in speed. Advanced editing should be done in advanced editing apps, anyway. This app is great for capturing screenshots and stylizing them so they are ready to go.

PicPick (http://www.picpick.org/) is really better than this; and not just because PicPick is freeware for home users; the post capture tools are just "not there yet"

Another alternative is Greenshot (http://getgreenshot.org/)

My choice; PicPick ... use it all the time, very effective!

Are you seriously going to post a review to restate that you are furthering your own recommendation for each version? That seems very sad and petty.

Now we have to sift through all of your frivolous reviews.

Thirding the recommendation for the last free version (1.1.10) which does plenty.

Seconding the recommendation of using the 1.1.10 last free version. Either that or the last free version of Faststone Capture (which is what I use, since it allows you to draw eg. red circles on screenshots when showing people what to click or what to look at in that screenshot, etc)

File not free, it offers a very smooth workflow and, most of all, correctly capture alpha blending and thus produce true alpha blended png files without any background, contrary to all current freewares in that area.
Beside thta, it is perfectly portable on an USB key.

Excellent program, but the fact that it's not free anymore dropped my rating of it. Look around and see if you can find v1.1.10 - it was the last free-but-fully-functional version and is pretty cool.

Nice little capture program. Has just the right features, and is very intuitive to use. Captures some alpha blended graphical entities that others will not, such as Rocket Dock and ClockX. However, the nags and watermark totally ruin it. Just FYI, the last free version of WinSnap is still fine. Ver 1.1.10 is free, has no nags, and is only 141K. It runs as a single file on your USB flash drive. Look it up!

Gravonia

Gravonia reviewed v2.0.1 on Feb 16, 2007

Severely dinged for:
- Nagware operation (not disclosed)
- Obtrusive watermaking of all trial shots*
*Mentioned in site FAQ; not in BN limitations.

As WinSnap's watermaking can render screenshots only marginally useful, making it impossible to agree with the developer's assertion: "This allows you to try all features of WinSnap before you purchase [sic] them."

And no, I'm not ridiculing the developer's English.

EDIT: noticed that it isn't freeware anymore, one point down.

zridling

zridling reviewed v2.0.1 on Feb 13, 2007

Nice little program, but far too slow, and the relation between keyboard shortcuts and the object you want to capture requires an unnecessary extra step compared to SnagIt, which lets you create a profile of any capture method you want, associate with a hotkey, and BAM! you're done.

ToeKneeC

ToeKneeC reviewed v2.0.1 on Feb 13, 2007

OK - The program is good - I like version 2. I give it a 4. It's very stable, does what it says.

OK, now the bad - what, you want money now. If I am going to pay for a screen capture program, I'll get SnagIt (tech support, more features, industry standard).

OK - I would pay for this - if you offered even close to SnagIt in features and fuctions. Then 19.99 would be a steal.

That is a terrible development. :(

Guess I'm sticking with 1.x.

For a long time I used Printkey, and then discovered WinsSnap. It is far and away the best screen snap utility out there, encompassing pretty much every possible feature one could ever want, and a few I had not even thought of in a smooth, well-polished package!

The only minor criticism I might be prompted to make is that the "print" function is either a Ctrl-P (requiring you to take your hand off the mouse) or mouse to File-Print-Print. There should be a dedicated "Print" button on screen which (just like the print icon in MSWord and many others will do an immediate print with no further dialogue to the default printer - there's lot's of empty real estate!

A very nice, simple app for screen shots. To include the Mouse Cursor in your screen shots, you just tick a box in the Settings dialog.

I can use the standard PRINT-SCRN key stuff to make the shots even. It's about as straight-forward and easy to use as anything out there, and on top of that it's free for personal use.

I'm looking forward to even more features and optimizations to an already great product.

Thanks for the work, folks.

Almost perfect! WinSnap just replaced 2 of my long time and trusted favorites, MWSnap and ScreenShot Captor! I especially like the file size, the fact that it runs with only the EXE file, the way it snaps difficult transparent objects, and the simple GUI. I downgrade it only because WinSnap claims to be "Portable", but truly is not. That's because it uses registry settings instead of an INI file in the same folder with the EXE file. I also wish the install EXE were a true SFX file. WinRAR and FilZip do not recognize it as an SFX, although 7-Zip does. Everything else is perfect! A score 4.4 for this fine little program.

Not quite the capture tool SnagIt 8.x is, but installs at 176th the file size of the TechSmith suite. An excellent screen capture utility, free for personal, non-commercial use. Lose 1 point for the dynamically adjusting position helper (can be turned off on-the-fly via F1), which always seems to get in the way of region captures.

Great program. Its small and easy to use. Captures look great and I love the shadow feature. I can see where having the pointer visible or not visible would be good. Turns out I didn't have a problem, it was the computer I was trying it on. Got home and in game worked no problem. I really like the program.

I have one suggestion for the program you might think about. Auto sizing. I take alot of screen shots for TMN but when I upload them, they have to be 320x240. Would be great to just have a radio button that gives you quick choices, and/or a place in the settings that you could give a fixed setting. Just a thought.

Very nice, small, and free. Only one thing missing for me: the ability to include the mouse pointer in captures like ACDSee and Screen Hunter (OR a quick-n-easy feature to add the mouse pointer after capture, like MWSnap). Given the watermarking and other features of WinSnap, I'm very surprised that it doesn't include a mouse pointer option.
