XAMPP is an easy-to-install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. It is really very easy to install and to use: just download, extract and start.

Cute alternative:

Haven't tried 1.7.5's beta, but 1.7.4 works fine for me on XP and Server 2003.
I currently use it to run a local development server, and it works great. With some time and manual configuration, you can even add extras like PostgreSQL to it quite easily.

What ever happened to the "Lite" version. XAMPP was always the best WAMP stack but is too big for my needs. UwAmp (http://www.uwamp.com/) seems a better option.

Yes. And with 99.9% chance yours.
This is actually a great application, or pack, for those not wanting to test it out on a webhotel, or finding this easier. I have always prefered this over WAMP and LampStacks.

Good program useful to test websites locally to save time.
Other alternatives are wampserver of course:

and my current favorite UWAMP (similar to wampserver)

This makes installation of the included programs very simple. I would recommend at least trying to install them separately first if you are new to them, rather than always relying on a package like this, so you can at least understand a bit of what it's doing. I have been won over by the WampServer package and use that instead now; I would recommend trying that, but when I did use XAMPP I didn't have any complaints.
cricri_pingouin reviewed v1.6.7 Beta 1 on Jun 17, 2008
Disregard ZombieREA review: this is NOT for IT people, and this in NOT for people who need to update every single component with the latest beta. In fact, anyone who bothers reading the program description at all would see that the goal of this package is the total opposite, i.e. it is for people who don't know or can't bother installing and configuring a web server down to individual components and tweaks to match very specific needs. For what it is aimed at (again, please read the description), it does an absolute brilliant job, and thus I give it a well deserved 5.

Simply awesome! Makes it easy for lazy people like me to host a fully featured website. Beats paying an ISP for a shell. :)

First thing: AIO pack is not gud idea for ITers. Because you don't know exactly what did they put in pack.
Next thing: You should install these things by yourself that you can handle all of its. And last thing, you can update for each programm that you want, don't need to wait until next pack.

Definitely 5 stars! I've been using XAMPP for development for about a year or so now, and I swear by it! Plenty of features, and It's a doddle to setup and run. Excellente!

* Apache HTTPD 2.2.4 + Openssl 0.9.8e
* MySQL 5.0.45
* PHP 5.2.3
* PHP 4.4.7
* phpMyAdmin 2.10.3
* Zend Optimizer 3.3.0
* 1.6.3 Patch
a lot of my websites' applications won't work correctly with the above packages.
I spent a few hours yesterday trying to get things to work, and ended up wiping out all the Xampp install and did a manual install of Apache 2.0.59, MySQL 4, and PHP4 and everything works well again.
I guess there's limited backwards compatibliity.
What I like about the Xampp package is ... hmmm. well, apache, php, and mysql are conveniently located in a single folder.

Still prefer Apache2Triad, as it's more complete and configurable, but this one is nice for beginner/intermediate users.

Any word on what changes are in this version over 1.61 ?
I had to do some Frankensteining to 1.61 to eliminate apache and mysql errors. Took days to get it tweaked out, so I'm really not looking forward to that again.
Crypton reviewed v1.6.1 on Apr 22, 2007
Great compilation and easy to use, I give it a 5 but I still like Apache2Triad better. Keeping this in the watch list for reference :)
Orbitration reviewed v1.6.1 on Apr 19, 2007
A+++. Would download again. :)
Seriously, though, I d/l the lite version from the site as it has PHP5, and then copied my old Apache conf folder to the new version, copied the old config.inc.php to phpmyadmin, and it fired right up, with updated Apache and PHP, etc.
Love Xampp, it's awesomely easy to setup a local server for testing your scripts before uploading.
Nadee reviewed v1.6.1 on Apr 19, 2007
A superb out-of-the-box web development package for developers. Before XAMPP we had to install the components separately and go though the troublesome configuration process. But XAMPP is as simple as installing any other piece of software on your machine.

Wonderful service provided with this great package.
Folks, additional addons available onsite, can be run without having to be installed...plenty of instructions & hints on download page.
id242 reviewed v1.6.1 on Apr 18, 2007
Wonderful program for those who want to have a simple home http/ftp/php/mysql/mail server which they can install and run without any headaches of getting all the programs to work well together.
Also perfect the noobs who like to have something working, tinker a bit with it to learn how it works and what features do what... giving a "noob" the tools to turn him into a self-taught webmaster.

Perfect solution if you don't care about the nuts and bolts of setting up a web server and associated programs (I have no need so I don't)
Canuckistani reviewed v1.6.0a on Feb 22, 2007
An excellent program but the configuration is too complex for the average home user. That in no way detracts from the outstanding quality of this server. Home users might want to try Abyss Web Server X1, which is also free, if they just want to whip up a quick server to transfer a few files to relatives or whatever.

I tried Apache2Triad and XAMPP blows it out of the water. It's easier to use, has more features, and you can even switch between PHP versions in about 2 seconds. Good stuff.

If there was a better option than XAMPP I would use it. But there isn't! My web development productivity level has increased significantly because of this amazing tool.
The MAZZTer reviewed v1.5.5 Beta 2 on Nov 20, 2006
dink you need to be patient. It paused for me at 30% for a few minutes but it was clearly still causing HD activity. Let it sit until it's done.
This package is awesome. The only thing it needs is better configuration file setup (ie to set up all the config files' directory paths) and upgrade support if you modify your config files.
dink reviewed v1.5.5 Beta 2 on Nov 20, 2006
this is crap!!...I run real apache and it's easy to use...this thing freezes up while exttracting at 30%...and then try to cancel and it won't even respond...have to use taskmgr to shut it down...
Letterman reviewed v1.5.4a on Oct 27, 2006
Easy, simple, clean and works. What more can i say?
cricri_pingouin reviewed v1.5.4a on Oct 9, 2006
As far as web servers are concerned, it doesn't get any simpler than this to setup.
Whenever I have anything to test server side, I use this and am up and running in no time.
I am quite impressed, although I admit I only ever use it as a local server. It's also more than just a web server, but that's pretty much all I need out of it.
PS: I forgot to mention that I use the Lite version.
Paul Skinner reviewed v1.5.4 Beta 3 on Sep 10, 2006
Absolutely brilliant.
Blissfully easy to set up,
is easily configurable,
and is perfect for the newbie who doesn't understand how to set up a server.
Full automated and delightfully simple.
Makes the perfect testing server (unless you [mainly] code in asp of course, but you should be shot anyway).
It's in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovenian, and Chinese.
So not just German like the screenshot.
