Publisher's Description

Microsoft .NET is a free, cross-platform, open-source developer platform for building many different types of applications. With .NET, you can use multiple languages, editors, and libraries to build for web, mobile, desktop, games, and IoT. You can write .NET apps in C#, F#, or Visual Basic. Whether you're working in C#, F#, or Visual Basic, your code will run natively on any compatible OS. Different .NET implementations handle the heavy lifting for you.

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 is a highly compatible, in-place update to the Microsoft .NET Framework 4, 4.5, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2 and 4.7. The web installer is a small package that automatically determines and downloads only the components applicable for a particular platform.

Apparently our buddy commenter Steve doesn't comprehend two things. First, this release is a PREVIEW release. And, most obvious, this site is "beta" releases - in this case PREVIEW ... so don't moan about something not working. My god, now ridiculous.

Screwed up 3 programs which use .Net Framework 4.5.1 just fine, had to delete & go to Windows update to get 4.5.1 + updates, so install with caution...

Performance improvements have been made with version 4.5.1 of which I feel are noticeable. My least favorite version was 3.5... Too intrusive and slow. I've tried to avoid MS.NET in the past but have found some software now that I like of which requires .NET.

@Steve(above)...
Yea, was worried about something like that happening so didn't install this yet. Only when needed by whatever software I install or update.

I really dislike this 'module' & when I can manage without it I will, 90% of the time installing Win updates are taken forever patching this piece of junk on a monthly basis & if there is a failure it's usually this.

MS have produced a fixer to hopefully sort update issues with Framework which is great bar for the fact it doesn't work on the PC that has problems with it.

@Zootopia3001 - You are so right ~

Edit:

I actually totally removed .NET from my main PC & was surprised only one program actually needed it, that program was removed, glad to see the back of .NET Framework.

If it hadn't been for Catalyst which requires it I would have removed .NET Framework the moment I installed Windows. Anyway, I stopped updating at .NET version 3.5 ...
The great thing with this factory is that it gives you time, once a month on Patch Tuesday, to get other things done while most of the time it takes an eternity to have its updates settled.
The funniest thing with this cargo is when it is used by a 100kB application, when without the heavy-weight the same application could run under 300kB : just like taking a helicopter to cross the street :)
Gosh.

BetaNews apparently has not done its homework. This program is NOT for Windows 8; that OS already includes 4.5 Framework, and the installer will tell you so if you try.

I find .NET totally useless. The ONLY software I ever use that needs it is Turbotax and that's only one week out of the year, if that. I just happen to like Turbotax, what can I say. After my tax filing is done this bloatware gets uninstalled pronto. Any other software I might try to install that requires .NET gets appropriately cancelled. There's plenty of other software alternatives out there that don't require this mess being on your system, including all the endless security updates/service packs that come with it.

Update: I also forgot that starting with version 4, MS .NET starts an NGEN service automatically that slows down PC boot time considerably, particularly your LAN connection. Very frustrating. Yes, it can be disabled in services, however, with each new update to .NET 4.x(which seems to come every couple of months), the service gets set to automatic again. That's even more frustrating.

@Zoroaster
I've come across that too... A software installer that was very, very small in size but was wanting to install that .NET behemoth for it to work. That's just totally ridiculous.

It's .NET. It's bloated, but it's required and it works.

The lack of XP support is disappointing, but expected I suppose...it is 11 years old.

I guess 4.5 framework is unnecessary for the win8 preview (YMMV)
